Not the typical 'vocione'. Borkh is one of the few Turandots who actually injects some nuance into the role, rather than just shouting and screaming. She also characterises well. Turandot is, after all, a frightened young woman, not a middle-aged Gorgon hollering at her kid's tenth-grade Latin teacher for assigning too much homework. Borkh hints at the vulnerability and passion beneath the icy exterior. Beautiful rendition. Thank you, Manoli!
Usually, when I hear his opera is being performed, I ask, "Who's screaming Turandot now?" As you say, she's a frightened young woman, and also someone so alluring and beautiful that people would risk their heads for her. Most singer of the role sound either like gorgons or like fishwives. I've heard very few singers who brought out the allure as well as the vulnerability in her. Bianca Scacciati actually sounded like a pretty young girl. Callas brought a lot of vulnerability to her, especially in the 1954 recording of the aria. I never got the fuss over Nilsson in this role, as she sounded hard as granite, despite the good high notes. There was nothing young, alluring, or beautiful about her characterization of the role, but it was well done in a steely sort of way.

her salome was thrilling too
The Best!!! Bravissimo!!!
One of the very greatest.
I don't know how sensitive that C6 was; Mario's high obliterated it.
I wonder if she ever considered singing this role on stage…
She didn’t sing much Puccini.
