The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV Is The Coolest Truck In A Long Time, If You Have The Cash...

  • The new Chevy Silverado RST EV is certainly spendy with a starting MSRP around $95,000, but for the select few that can afford it, it's also the most interesting, at least to me. Why? Two reasons: The range is fantastic, and the midgate is game changing.
This isn't Chevy's first midgate, the Avalanche had one as well, but the Silverado's portal splits like a 60/40 seat back in addition to going fully open. This makes the Silverado significantly more cargo practical then a Lightning, Cybertruck or R1T. You know, as long as you don't mind that gaping hole being open to the back. Thanks to the Multi-Flex tailgate (which I prefer to call the origami hatch), it's pretty easy to stuff things that are nearly 11 feet long into the bed without worrying [too much] about them sliding out the back. Kayak? No problem. 4x8 plywood? Easy peasy. 1,000 lbs of 12-foot lumber? It'd hang out past the tailgate by only around 14 inches.
Also solid: the interior space. You'll find more legroom and headroom than the Tesla or Rivian, and even a bit more legroom than Lightning. The cabin is about the same width as the Silverado 1500 as well. What you won't find is CarPlay. If you want that, you need a gas Silverado because GM's new EVs will be missing this feature. (Gas GM vehicles will still get CarPlay for the foreseeable future.)
Range and charging are also wins for the Silverado, depending on where and how you're charging. AC charging happens at 19 kW, which is nice since Ford seems to have deleted the 19 kW charger from the Lightning for 2024. DC charging happens at over 360 kW, assuming you have a fast charger capable of that. It's worth noting that on a Tesla Supercharger the peak will be around 185 kW, so when Chevy joins the NACS party you may still want to hunt for a CCS plug.
The key thing about Chevy's charge speeds is that a 70% charge in this truck would net you 300+ miles of range, while a 70% charge in a Cybertruck or Lightning might get you 210 ish miles. That makes it easier to road trip or tow in the Silverado... But remember: not many charging stalls are designed to accommodate a trailer yet.
What do you think? Assuming you had $100K to drop on your next truck, would you get this? Or a fully-loaded R1T with a blistering 0-60 and 4 motors? Or a Hummer? Or a Lightning and a gasoline car? (Because you could get a Lightning AND an Escape hybrid for less than this Silverado...

To make up the msrp between my 2023 Silverado (new) and this thing is $42k or 210,000 miles in diesel in CA @ $5 a gallon.
At the rate I drive it’s over 20+ years of fuel. And the truck fills up in 5 minutes and goes another 600-700 miles a tank. Just crazy.

    • @Tokamak3.1415
      @Tokamak3.1415 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@SelvaGanesh-Buzz I think GM has enough history with trucks to build decent suspension for a 4-5 ton truck. The brake use will be minimal thanks to regen. The tires will have to be wide to hold that thing to the ground and consequently it's going to have very low miles/KWH. Of course trucks should be used mostly as trucks and not as a daily commuter vehicle but that's not the lifestyle choices people make these days.

Hummer has twice the size of battery pack 246 kWh, yet it has the same range as cyber truck.. efficiency and engineering is everything when it comes to EV.. more speed, better handling, lower operating costs, and lower purchase price.. it all adds up + range.. sloppy engineering leads to even bigger battery packs, which then snow balls into bigger and heavier wheels, brakes, suspension, and everything else..That EV hummer is an example of engineering inefficiency and poor battery management.. the same will be for this Silverado EV as well.. and don't even start on the "towing" part.. lol

    Towing an 8000 lb. trailer:
TFL Truck tested the Cybertruck with an 8,000 lb. trailer. The range was 85 miles and used 1.258 kW per mile.
With the Silverado's 200 kWh pack you could tow the same trailer for 159 miles. At a DC fast charger rate of 35 cents per kWh it would cost $70. Charging at home at 15 cents per kWh would be $30.
In comparison the Ram Cummins diesel with a 50 gallon tank could tow the same trailer 486 miles for $150 at $3 per gallon or 30.83 cents per mile.
    * If diesel was $4.27 per gallon it would cost the same as using the Silverado with a DC fast charger at 35 cents per kWh.

In China there are at least 4 times more brands to choose from, such fierce competition among the car manufacturers leads to better prices and quality. For example, if I want a SUV/truck combo, I can buy the ChangAn QiYuan E07, which is significantly more affordable than Silverado EV, and will be more reliable too.

This is likely untrue. The Lightning made the mistake of making their base level model under 250 miles of range... which is ridiculous for a truck.
On the other hand, Chevy has wisely utilized fleets to work out the kinks with the WT and is now opening to the consumer market with top level option. This thing has about 450 miles of range and full bidirectional charging with all the bells and whistles. This thing is awesome.

Alex you are wrong the Lightning for 2024 does 0-60 in 3.8 second which makes the Lightning faster than the Silverado EV by almost a second. Ford did do some improvements on the 24 model like heat pumps for better cold weather performance among other things. The 0-60 in 3.8 is Fords numbers and being the Lightning is almost 3000 pounds lighter than the Silverado EV. I would bet when they are lined up the Lightning will smoke it. Lightning weighs 6300 pounds with the extended battery and that Silverado weighs 9000 pounds and thats also more than a 1 ton gas truck that is just crazy. To have twice the size battery of the Lightning and only a 100 more miles the Chevy EV is no where near as efficent as the Lightning. The Range is nice forsure and if you can find a charger that will do the rate GM claims thats nice too but to find a charger that will do that is another story.

The Bolt was a great EV that was very efficient and suited to what an EV architecture could provide (recall aside). I can’t fault GM, Ford or Ram for just chucking in more batteries to get the pickup segment going but it’s far from an ideal situation to have so much battery just to market the vehicle as being capable enough to fulfill a typical half ton use case IMO. I’d rather see smaller cars being pure EV and going with a range extender approach for larger vehicles until such a time that battery material and weight can be kept more in line with traditional vehicles.

People should understand about BMS (battery management system) and how effectively Tesla manages its battery!!

Hummer has twice the size of battery pack 246 kWh, yet it has the same range as cyber truck.. efficiency and engineering is everything when it comes to EV.. more speed, better handling, lower operating costs, and lower purchase price.. it all adds up + range.. sloppy engineering leads to even bigger battery packs, which then snow balls into bigger and heavier wheels, brakes, suspension, and everything else..That EV hummer is an example of engineering inefficiency and poor battery management.. the same will be for this Silverado EV as well.. and don't even start on the "towing" part.. lol

The RST 440 mile range is great, but a $95,000 price and 9,000 lb. curb weight are too high! And, large 20", 22" or 24" wheels are a bad idea for trucks especially with no spare! My 2023 Ford Lightning Pro ER (cancelled commercial order) was $48,800 bought new early 2024 ($61,500 MSRP - 5,200 dealer discount -$7,500 point of sale tax credit). It doesn't have all the high end features, but does have an EPA 320 miles range (real world 270 miles freeway at 70 mph), nice riding 18" wheels, full size spare tire and great frunk. If Chevy can make a plain work truck version of the RST for $60k or less, then they'll have a real winner!
