  • music by maurice jarre was a French composer and conductor. His son is the electronic composer Jean Michel Jarre ." His score for David Lean's Ryan's Daughter (1970), set in Ireland, completely eschews traditional Irish music styles, owing to Lean's preferences. The song "It was a Good Time," from Ryan's Daughter went on to be recorded by musical stars such as Liza Minnelli who used it in her critically acclaimed television special Liza with a Z as well as by others during the 1970s.

If the coward you are referring to is the British officer I have to disagree, he was portraying a man suffering from shell shock.

@@cassiesmith6468 I was referring to Ryan, Rosie’s (Sarah Miles) father. She did not pass information to the English. Yes, the British soldier was suffering from shell shock, it was a powerful portion of the film’s heartbreaking story. He waited for Rosie not knowing she was being beaten-up by the people of the town, as her father cowardly stood by watching, while he, not his daughter, was the snitch.

@@cherylparker5071 Totally true Cheryl. Mr Ryan proved to be a coward, despite his obvious love for his daughter. But men have their flaws. But this was not the time for it. And to play it off by hauling in the weapons, and in the meantime, full well knowing they would be stopped. That's why he tried to convince O'Leary to just give it up and leave because of the storm and to be let off the hook.

This film was lambasted by some critics on it's release to such an extent that David Lean didn't make another film for fourteen years but...times have changed and now this epic movie is regarded as a classic all over the world. As it's reputation has grown so to has the number of tourists coming to Kerry Ireland to visit the locations where the film was shot. The old school is still largely intact. The critics vies on this film now is that from the viewpoint of an epic romantic movie there is nothing else that can compare with Ryans Daughter.

Tim mcCaffrey the old school is not largely intact, sadly. It’s a trek to find it and you have to ask the locals where it is exactly. It’s a shame the locals didn’t preserve it. We were there 3 years ago and it is a ruin with no roof, but if you love the film, it still holds huge charisma!

I'm one of the fans who had to visit the location in Dingle. The beach was magnificent and echoes of the film were everywhere. As an impressionable 16-year old back in 1970, the film appealed to my romantic nature and imagination - so intense, so lush. I still have the vinyl soundtrack, with its Windsor Bold font proclaiming the title in its cover art.

Agreed: Rosy's Theme remains the most evocative and elusive of Jarre's motifs - and is used stunningly here as it seems to slowly assemble itself as Rose's emotions/consciousness awaken in the film. Not even a nomination. Never trust the Academy - they only get it right about a quarter of the time - if that.
If I'm not mistaken, weren't there two other tracks on the original MGM release? A straightforward full length version of the Tim O'Leary motif called "Song (March?) of the Irish Rebels" and an End Title track which was called "It Was a Good Time" (heard as the credits roll over the departing bus). Would it be possible to post these? And thanks for posting what you did - I am very grateful. I had this on the original vinyl (destroyed in a flooded basement), then on a CD imported from Britain (stolen in an apartment break in - well, at least they had some taste) - now it's near impossible to get a hold of in any form.
As for the two song versions, they were no mere afterthoughts and were created simultaneously to 'cash in' on the prior success of "Somewhere My Love' which had been written sometime after the instrumental "Lara's Theme' proved to be such a hit. The sleeve of the original vinyl release makes reference to "The Major" also being known as "Where Was I When the Parade Went By?"

I think one of the main reasons the film was savagely attacked by critics upon its' 1970 release was because many could not believe Robert Mitchum playing against type as a cuckolded, meek school teacher and the almost vapid acting by the moody, charismatic Christopher Jones in his break out role. Plus, the movies' glacial pace at 3 plus hours put many to sleep. In fact, the harsh criticism caused director David Lean such distress, he didn't make another movie for 15 years, a long hiatus by even his standards. It has gained a kinder following over the past 50 years and is viewed in retrospect as a sweeping epic with stunning photography of Ireland's rugged Dingle peninsula.

David Lean's films are visual "poetry" coupled with deeply sad and heartwarming score. A panoramic nostalgia. And actors deliver one of their finest. The only true competitor that comes to my mind is the great Russian director Eisenstein.
