I used to go on holiday to the island every year up to 1958. This recalled many memories: the Princess boats languishing outside Saro’s hanger and the days when the Portsmouth to Ryde ferry was operated by proper ships. Also the pool relief map of the island and even the gnomes! A different world back then.
The c1950s was a good decade for those who travelled around Britain to such locations as the IOW before much of the Best of Britain was lost in the past.
Thank you for this beautiful film, it bought back some very happy memories of a holiday there in the same year as the film, we stayed on a farm in Godshill, the food was amazing best breakfasts ever.
Those shots at 0:17 onwards are definitely Shanklin. You can see the clock / memorial on the beach at 0:19 and then panning left you see Fisherman's Cottage on the beach with the chine above it (0:26) and the (to the left) the cliff (0:33). The pier follows immediately. 0:47 is Freshwater Bay. 1:01 - The Needles. 1:16 - Alum Bay (coloured sands). 2:00 - Ventnor seafront / beach / boating lake. 3:25 - Godshill Model Village. 3:32 - Shanklin Old Village > Shanklin beach. 4:28 - Blackgang Chine. 5:08 - Yarmouth followed by East Cowes to include Saunders-Rowe factory. 6:37 - Ryde seafront. 7:05 - Back to Shanklin (7:41 - seafront). 8:10 - Ryde Pier head and station and Portsmouth (Harbour) to end. The sound has been dubbed on. Would be better with some decent music.

The maze at Blackgang Chine is right on the edge of the cliff now!

I can see why people stayed there in 1957 not many had even seen a plane but sadly I went to Sandown in 2010 and it closed down at 10 pm

Not much has changed except we've lost a few piers and gained lots more houses and cars.
And Overners
Super!
Just think no internet & mobile phones.. Back in the day when people communicated by speech
We still do communicate by speech. It’s hard to do when you’re not in the same room as the other person.
Fantastic, see a working Chain ferry at -3:27 🤣
Wonderful. Are we allowed to re-post this or not please?
Hello Alan pleased you enjoyed the video biut no re-posting, thanks

Well I quite like it there. I take it you live or holiday in Utopia?
If that was true than no one would be going to the lsle of Wight for there holiday’s in the past and even now in modern years before covid
