    I love this game and play it to this day for the following reasons:
    1)beautiful, bright, realistic stages- the beach, airport, rooftop, parking lot,mall,dojo, lab, jungle,Tokyo street, fight club. They are 3-4 huge stages
    2)amazingly good music-90% of the soundtrack is excellent with beach, airport,dojo,jungle themes at the top
    3)the pace is actually a merit over previous and subsequent Tekkens- it's not as slow as T2 but not ridiculously fast as in T6 and T7. It gives you time to move around, execute different moves and enjoy your fight instead of quickly mushing buttons. You move around, switch places with your opponent, take advantage of the uneven terrain, jump off walls
    4)there is maybe 1 overpowered move, which gives you a fair chance of winning with everyone while in T5 there are many overpowered moves that take almost a 3rd of your lifebar and are easy to abuse, which leads to rounds being over in 5 seconds. Examples? Lei's double jump kick, Nina's ->o xo ->o, Law's

      Egon Jensen I agree, its not like Tekken was a big game in the Evo tourneys, and it isnt like the previous tekkens werent broken, eg, tekken 1 and 2 had full health combos, usually ending the match in 5 seconds.

    Tekken 4 had the best art direction of the series, the costumes are all fashionable, diaper included of course, the levels where nice looking, the even feel connected as if they’re close to each other, music was bomb, Art was lit. I love tekken 4 for that inspire of the gameplay and lower character count.

    • @thorhighheels
      @thorhighheels  5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Oh yeah for sure. I kinda prefer Tekken 2's overall 90s Japan Business Casual aesthetic, but it doesn't actually show up much outside of the FMVs. 4 though, is perfectly stylized all over, and 5 onward feels too gaudy/silly for me.

      They had more characters planned in the Sound files but I don’t know why they didn’t add them.

    • @markel9000
      @markel9000 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      InvestedGman I’ve heard them and I believe that they just had the announcer record as many old characters and alternate names as possible to have in case they added anyone rather than any of the character being planned, ie eddy was added in the ps2 version

    Always thought this game was underrated... What it lacks in speed and all that shit, it makes up for with personality in my opinion.
    What you think of all the new announcements about the Switch?
    Looks like its gonna be the console for farting out obscure Japanese games, new Shin Megami Tensai game coming for it tooo... Which is kinda cool I suppose.

    • @thorhighheels
      @thorhighheels  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Much like the last two Ninty consoles, I dig the potential it has, and the idea of a No More Heroes 3 is pretty cool too. But, considering I can count all the Wii & Wii U games I actually like on two hands, I'm still skeptical as to whether or not it'll live up to that potential. So I don't think I'll be getting it on launch or anything. But if it gets cool games (like more weird shit which should be easier and less costly to develop with it being a bit lower spec) then'll totes pick one up. Love the design in any case. Looks cool!

    • @djdisarae
      @djdisarae 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ThorHighHeels not to mention it's got rid of region lock, the games will be even easy to get hold of as well. I think if they was to market it as a handheld console/tablet and put features like Netflix and Facebook ect with the added bonus of full blown Nintendo games they could be big competition in the iPad market. But advertising as a console that can double up as hand held could be bad for them because it automatically is held up against the ps4 and Xbox one which blow it out of the water power and games wise, not to mention already over 3 years in to there lifespan.

    Tekken 4 and 5 are by far my favourite Tekken games of the Franchise. Especially Tekken 4 is sourly the most unique and underrated (mostly because of the choices that hindered the competitive scene) but it is my favorite Tekken to date, because of the very seriousness Vibes of the Story aspects perspective. The seriousness atmosphere of Tekken 4 it's on another level in my opinion. The soundtrack is what gets me the most next to the game's atmosphere. With soundtracks like: Fetus(Prologue), Authentic Sky, Unihabited(Mall Area) Didgerhythm(Jungle Area) Touch and Go(Airport Area) and Kitsch(Beach Area) and The Inner Shrine(Hon-Maru Temple) and others soundtracks, For me Tekken 4 remains even in these days the most Unique Tekken game of the series. ☯️

    Opinions on 5 and Tag Tournament?

    • @thorhighheels
      @thorhighheels  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think 5 is probably the best one in the series gameplay wise. I still go back it, or the PSP version, every once and a while, and it still feels REALLY fucking good to play. Though my personal favorite remains Tekken 2 for nostalgic reasons.
      As for Tag, I still like it, but looking back at it, it feels more like a slightly less interesting version of Tekken 3. Also Tag 2 shits all over it in my opinion. I tried playing it not to long ago, and while I loved the soundtrack and style, it didn't keep my intrest for very long.

      (Thicc comment warning)
      While Tekken 4 has a great atmosphere, an insane attention to detail, and is fun in it's own right, it's fundamentally flawed as a fighting game.
      Being able to move before the match starts, combined with the bad wallsplat mechanic/uneven terrain of the stages, turns the game into "See who could get to the hill with a wonky hitbox first so I could stunlock my opponent."
      Characters like Steve and Lee take full advantage of this, with Steve's high damage output and hit-stun, and Lee's fast jabs and godlike Mist Step.
      Jin is on a whole other level though. His moveset has a lot of low risk pokes with decent damage output, which already makes him great in a poking-centered game. One of said pokes is his Laser Scraper, which turns Jin from an already strong character, to a busted one. It's a 3-hit natural combo thats completely safe on block, and does a good chunk of damage. But the thing that makes it so good is that it becomes unblockable when you hold the button.
      The gap in power with Jin, Steve, Lee --- compared to the rest of the cast, is massive, making everyone else almost obsolete. Now, that isn't to say that the other characters aren't fun to play, but when it comes to Tekken *especially when your serious about it* it's "know frames or die." That doesn't mean that Tekken 4 is a bad videogame, it's actually my 2nd favorite behind DR. It evolved the series in a ton of aspects, but it's just that the core of the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired.

    I started playing competitively in Tekken Tag, so by T4 I was considered a "veteran". That being said, I loved T4 for what it was. It was an ambitious Tekken with urban flair. I loved how realistic they tried getting with the voice acting, language barriers, actual places people might fight, and the chillest yet hypest music ever.
    In terms of speed, I thought T4 was faster than T2, T3 or TTT, but like you said, they had to do this for the close-quarter stages. And although they lacked CGI endings, we got more fleshed out endings which most of them took very seriously. I would choose T4's arcade experience and endings over T7 any day.
    All in all, T5 definitely set the tone for the rest of the series, but without T4 there may have never been walls in Tekken or an emphasis on juggling. And out of all of the Tekkens, T4's atmosphere is the top for me and apparently for a lot of people.

      What the hell are you talking about? 5 had the most contents of the series to date. 3 arcade ports of TK1-3, character customization, a FULLY functional Tekken Force with unlockables and easy way to farm money (Unlock permanent Devil Jin or Devil mode in Devil within) both Story Mode and Ranking Arcade battle. Also, the Starblade port built inside the game as well. Tekken 5 gameplay went back Tekken 3 but with the engine of Tekken 4 hence made the game 10x better. What I don't like was the throw, throw also part of the character charm and yet it reduced to a FREAKING SIDE CHANGE.
      5 had all of 4 content with more stuffs as well.

    It's not my favorite in the series, but it's a very close 3rd, sure, it's probably the most unbalanced game in the Tekken series since Tekken 3, but it's the most atmospheric game in the series, with it's darker toned storyline, deep and stylistic design (the best in the series in my opinion) and probably the best composed soundtrack in the series, also it has quite a lot of single player content which is always a plus for me.

    There was nothing wrong with this game. Don’t believe the hype!

  • @TheSoulExplorer
    @TheSoulExplorer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Unpopular opinion, but probably my favourite in the series. The game that made me buy a PS2, coming right of the Tekken 3 craze, I'll never forget the awesome feeling of playing the sequel for the first time.
    I love the story, the atmosphere, the stylish vibe and the awesome music. The roster of characters isn't the most extensive one, but I think it's perfect for what it is. A major complaint I have with the recent entries is that while the rosters are insane, they're mostly bloated with clones and generic characters. Tekken 4 is a more contained, small roster but at least each character is unique. Combot is the only exception, and the few characters with the same moveset are palette swaps that don't even show up in the select screen.
    Now the gameplay. Yeah, I agree that Tekken 4 is not the fastest in the series, but I have no problems with the pace of it. Slower also means less button mashing. That, combined with the cage type stages and the switch move makes this game the most strategic in the series. And the last one to dare in implementing some meaningful changes to the core gameplay. Tekken 5 is Tekken 3 on steroids and I've never been a fan of rage systems that reward suckage.
    On a side note, it was the last one to feature a decent Tekken Force into the mix. And what better reward for beating it than the awesome Hon-Maru stage?
    I know that some people liked the Devil Within thing in Tekken 5, but I found it tedious at best. And you can unlock Devil Jin by playing the Story Mode anyway, so...

    It's probably my least favorite Tekken. It's either that or Tekken 6. But judging from the gameplay footage with all of the cutscene triggered super moves, Tekken 7 may be my least favorite. I'm sorry, but I don't think that super moves belong in a Tekken game. Just because every fighter has them, doesn't mean Tekken needs them.

    After playing Tekken 3 it was impossible to return to Tekken 2 because of Z-axis.
    With TTT because of characters.
    Tekken 4 - mechanics + graphics\design.
    5 - characters + moves.

    TTT2 - characters + combos
    T7 - mechanics + moves + combos + characters + customizations + mods

      the only slightly strange behaviour I would like Namco to consider is with mobile devices. When Tekken came to mobile it was possible to play Tekken for gba through emulator, which was tremendously better. Same with Soul Calibur for mobiles. And same is for Tekken for iOS/Android with psp emulator.
      I hope they already know all of this and exactly that is why last two Ridge Racer games had updated/innovative mechanics

    Tekken 4 and 5 are my favourite Tekken games of the Franchise. ☯️ By the way Tekken 4 had the best story and atmosphere no doubt. Also my favourite Tekken Intros of the series are 4 and 5. Especially Tekken 4, developers did a lot of things incredibly right, most storylines were incredibly cool and the atmosphere and seriousness was just on a another level. I don't think most would disagree that Tekken 4 had a great"everything-except-the-fighting" to it. Great and Epic soundtracks, unique character designs, good individual stories, and an interesting main Mishima arc revival. The thing is that it's still a fighting game and no matter how great everything else is, if the fighting bit is flawed it'll overshadow the positives. ☯️✌

  • @Omega_Weapon15

    One small nitpick about your comment on the gameplay differences between Tekken 4 and the older titles. Tekken 4 was hated for the exact opposite of what you stated. The previous Tekken games had a non existent poking game(at a top competitive level). Considering that the top tiers of those games where dominated by characters with great movement, solid whiff punishers, and juggles were basically everything. In Tekken 4, they heavily nerfed movement (you cant side step only sidewalk) and focused on a poke heavy style gameplay and gutted juggles (they increased the pushback of the juggles and gravity, making combos very limited).
    Characters like Steve,Jin, and Nina basically bullied the entire cast while Kazuya, a character built on movement and strong launchers. Was kneecaped hard. Making him a pretty subpar counter hit style character and his iconic launching electric wind godfist into a counterhit only launcher. basically made it useless. Among countless other things.

      You do know that the uneven terrain was made as a way to make it more realistic, right?

    • @therentpursuer9869
      @therentpursuer9869 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MegaTroySmith I do know that. And yes they are more realistic arenas than the games after it, they feel like real places that are lived in (Airport, Parking Lot, and Laboratory are my favourites) they're the reason why I still return to T4. But as a gameplay mechanic, they're just broken. I would really like to see Bamco return to uneven terrain, because Tekken needs a breath of fresh air and DOA has shown that those kinds of stages can be done right.

      sorry I took it down. I ended up disagreeing with and disliking a lot of what I did and said in those videos over time. normally I wouldn't take something down over that, but my next video will talk about a ton of similar things And is a huge fighting game extravaganza. and I didn't like the idea of ppl going from that video to the telken retrospective, as youtube is likely to recommend it as such, so I set it to private. at least for the time being.

    Favorite Tekken to look at and listen but I'd rather play the games in-between them being Tag 1 and 5/DR. I think it's above average for what it tries to do I suppose. Not bad. But not amazing which is okay.

      But I do think the non-flat stage construction in a traditional fighter is interesting. The only other example I can think of is VF3 which I'm not too familiar with how that fanbase rolls since I'm more or less a new fan but the buzz around 3 from comments and a discord seems to be a love it/hate it thing mostly.

    I thought 4 was the best of the series, they tried new things, 5 was a step back, "more of the same". They should have polished 4's innovations instead of just removing them and going back to the same ol same old.

    • @thorhighheels
      @thorhighheels  7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I've actually been playing through all the Tekken games back to back this week and I kind of agree. Tekken 5 was just 3 again but a bit better. And since then, all Tekken games have just been 5 only with some things added and some things taken away, never really getting better or worse as a whole. It's stagnated I guess. That said though, while 4 is certainly different, I'm afraid I just don't really enjoy how it plays. Then again, Tekken 1 and 2 aren't exactly amazing either in retrospect, and they did stick with that formula and made it work. So who knows, where it could've gone had they'd built upon 4..

    Did they retcon some of the characters ages? If the events of Tekken 4 were 20 years later from Tekken 1 and 3 shouldn't characters like Xiayou be a lot older now in Tekken 7?

    • @starshark1016
      @starshark1016 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not at all. Tekken 3 takes place 18 years after Tekken 2 and Tekken 4 takes place 2 years after that.
      The reason the intro says 20 years later is because Tekken 2 was Kazuya's last chronological appearance before 4 reintroduced him.
      As for Xiaoyu she was 16 in Tekken 3 and 18 from 4 to 7.
