Google has released a new platform called NotebookLM that may change how you do research, take notes, and organize everything online.
NotebookLM lets you read, take notes, ask questions, organize your ideas, and much more -- all with the power of Google AI helping you at every step of the way.
NotbeookLM is powered by Google's latest AI model Gemini.
You can access NotebookLM with a free Google account. notebooklm.google.com/
It will be limited to user outside of the U.S. but check for yourself to see if it’s available to you.
To start using NotebookLM, first, we need to create a notebook. A notebook is where I’ll store everything related to one topic that I’m researching. In this case, I’m working on a course for another AI tool called Microsoft Copilot, so I’ll store all my research in one page.
Then, you need to add a source. The source can be documented in your Google Drive, PDFs, text files, or copied text.
You can add 20 different documents from Drive, each containing 200,000 words.
Once you add one or more sources, you can use the chat box and prompt it to interact with your sources.
With each chat, you can choose to pin the chat to keep track of all your conversations.

I would say that most likely Google would not only steal my information but give me a woke answer. After all, it's not everyday you receive a lying picture of George Washington when he turns out to be black from a Google AI !
Perfect. It's like getting an assistant to read all those documents, and asking the person a query, instead of you reading your own materials -- pretty much what a lawyer does to their paralegals.
Hopefully they do this for bills the senate is trying to pass.
Asking your paralegals to read text for you is like asking the dish washer to cook in a fine dining restaurant. It saves a lot of time for the chef, but the result may taste a lot „different“
The problem is Google's dark history of abandoning tools. That's the problem of upload tools. Much rather have a local tool, local data, even ignoring all privacy concerns...
Google doesn't really "abandon" anything that is successful. Users either don't pay or don't use. The "killed by" trope was funny 15 years ago. It gets traction, I get.
If users actually used it and, more importantly, PAID FOR IT there's no way that Google would discontinue.
Can you name one product that was a commercial/financial success and Google killed it?
I'll wait.
I hate the cult of Apple. But Apple's customers show up with their wallets to pay for Apple products/services.
Microsoft also "kills" stuff either outright or just doesn't update it all making it unusable.
What's your poison?
Google runs massive analytics on usage, engagement, etc. If users aren't using/paying properly, guess what happens. Lesson learned. Google moves on. You should too.
There's no privacy concerns.
Remember, gaza is only a test site ... real Target is Us
Try notio it’s very similar and won’t get abandoned since it’s the product itself
@@GregSzarama how so? You're sharing your own notes information to them. You can't tell me they are not using this data to train AI
Thank you. Will check it out starting tomorrow, because my business project requires a lot of notes, writing, scripting, etc.
This video is perfect timing. Thank you so much.
As a Notes freak, I loved this news.
I'll try it out.
I tried to use this to find a relationship between two historical documents. The result was a spinning icon for over an hour. Same documents, same prompt to chatGPT 4, response was fast and very insightful. Still seems to have a long way to go before it can compete.
this is the best productivity hack for me for this year, thanks!!!
Very interesting! Will definitely will be following this closely. Thanks for sharing.
Very cool idea, I’ll check it out. Notice selecting specific sources can help reduce hallucinations, but it won't eliminate them completely, as the AI's underlying model still plays a role.
And as it’s still labeled ‘experiment’ and not available within the Workplace offering, I guess it’s a great tool for training Gemini, too 😉 But then again, as it’s just available within the US the training data is feeding the (cultural) bias of the model.
It absolutely still can hallucinate. The underlying LLM is still trained on the web. This is just a compression layer to focus a prompt response.
yes, and in my case, I caught it pulling in extraneous information that was technically accurate, but was from about a century AFTER the material was written. I can see how there's a use case for pulling in information, but there's also a use case if I want to know about that specific thing, in the mind of that specific author in 1850, and it starts talking to me about 1967.
The added bonus from Google is the woke content.
NotebookLM corpus is still essentially the web.
For example, you can ask a totally unrelated question to your sources and it will still produce a coherent response. (Using the lightbulb provided example, I asked about making a dairy-free cake).
When asking NotebookLM directly if their corpus is beyond the attached sources, the response is yes.
When asking if hallucinations are still possible, the response is yes and the LM will pull data from beyond the attached sources
Integrating NotebookLM with Google Scholar can streamline the process of gathering academic insights and industry trends, giving you a competitive edge in your business strategy. Keep it concise and focused for maximum efficiency.
Good night. How do you use or apply Google Scholar into your work?
Whenever you have time, an answer will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Have a good night!
Only access your own ‘private’ stuff….on google drive lol. You are the product.
Very cool, but it still can hallucinate, hallucinations are unavoidable by the structure of an LLM
Goodluck with your data
This is fantastic. I can't wait for it to come to my country. I wonder if it can somehow be integrated with Keep.
It’s Google, So it’ll probably be sunset by the time I login
Sorry, didn't get the joke. Can you explain?
@@ichigo_kurosaakijust grab a cocktail and enjoy watching the sunset 😊
Facts
You have your own pkm database or something like that. Neat!
Great video. It needs a feature to read PDF files stored on my Google Drive
Google is the last place I'd put my notes. I'd sooner delete them.
I love this idea. It's like an LLM with memory which is what chatGPT is doing right now. I see there are many privacy concerns here, but web APIs are a platform-independent way of making apps these days and I don't think the future is making apps on a specific platform for everything to be local anymore, unfortunately (or at least give it the guise of being so).
would be awesome if it could also take sources as audio.. for like recording lectures and making notes from that
LLM hallucinations aren’t a result of web access or input context. It’s the result of a probability based algorithm with the trained data.
I really need the podcast style note recall they demo'd
I just made an amazing aid for my position it as a biomedical Technician, troubleshooting manual is 800 pages of decision trees, i hate it.. this makes it searchable. Also can ask it what a part number is and for its price.
Do you know if it will/does read images? A lot of my evernote's are images.
Amazing!
great way to collect data btw :3
When will it be available for global audience?
notionAI can also learn from your note when answering questions
Yea notion ai is great too
Perfect, more curated data for Google.
I wonder if it can be used as a diary.
Does it work with text in the images?
Seems like obsidian with an ai plugin would do the same thing but better/privately
Not in Australia yet, but this looks perfect.. I'll get away from notetab now LOL
So is this functioning as Google's plug & play RAG?
this is awesome!
Is this product powered by the RAG model ?
Does anyone know what tool he is using to record this video (the screen recording + face recording combination)
Does it read spreadsheets from sheets?
It looks good:)
Wonderful, can one also upload videos in the notebook?
I don’t see that option. Just the transcript I think
I'm currently writing a review about Google Notebook LM AI tool. I stumbled upon this content. I want to know if it has a subscription. There are not much details about this tool at the moment.
It is like NOTION's Q&A
Omg you only discover it? and you say it will change things for ever no way :)
Website: This is only available in United States
NordVPN: I am now in United States
Website: Oops! You are in!
It can hallucinate. For you to say it can’t tells me u don’t fully understand what hallucination is in LLMs
Yes I misspoke there. I mean it can’t find irrelevant information we don’t need.
@@SkillLeapAI ok got you, that makes sense
Can we use one note notebook as source?
I like your subtle sound effects. Nice job on video editing. I hope Perplexity comes with something similar. As for Google, curious to see how long before this ends up in the graveyard. I no longer use anything new from Google, I have been burned too many times.
Only available in the US
This is just a tool for Google to capture content it otherwise wouldn't be able to. By uploading you are likely waving any rights and the documents can belong to Google to do what Google wants, train their model better for example.
Could they not integrate it with Google Keep
Before you jump to notebooklm (like me) - pls note it's only available for those in the US. Until then .. moving on.
What are the system requirements for running NotebookLM? Will most desktops and laptops be able to run it?
It’s web based.
so...not a replacement for oneNote or evernote, at least not yet, right?
divorcing searches or tasks or projects from the internet strikes me as too limited. I don't want to do a project that does not go beyond my knowledge base, as I am not the largest company or entity that knows it all. I ALWAYS want to EXPAND my knowledge, not just my own notes regurgitated (that's just an editor, just a re-writer). It is as you say a great note-taker, but that does not change much for me. Thanks for making this so clear, I signed into it and might keep it near my available AI tools, but I was already doing this in OpenAI Knowledge uploads to my GPT Assistants.
I was think that I want more the just my data too
I would assume the model is less likely to hallucinate things if it is just a pretrained model fine tuned on user provided documents.
I think it really is just better oriented for research work, where there's less data pertaining to your research topic in llms
You could copy articles that you’ve found truthful on the topic to your data so you know it’s pulling from trusting data, not the general web. Still including more than you personally know, just pre filtered for reliable sources
Wait, hallucinations are possible still with notebook, actually with any source, because it’s an arquitecture’s staff. Remember that those are generative models, so guess.. it generate text, so there’s always a level of random es in this generation , no matter the source. And on top of this the model are already pre-trained on the huge text base before you use it keeps all of it in a form of probabilities distribution for each, let’s say, word.
Interesting ❤
I thought we could also add source as a URL :(
Amazing
So what about Data Confidentiality and Privacy. Won't the content generated by this be used in Google's LLM and Big Data Repository?
Is there an NDA from Google. I cannot imagine some important patent-related content already appearing in the responses of an LLM chat-Bot interaction.
Can you use pdf in other languages, I mean, one in French, one in German and a couple in English?
Yes.
How much does this cost?
The only catch is that now google knows your notes too and other people would also get answers from your notes.
Needs to be able to use ebooks from Kindle or Google Play Books
How does this square with google Keep?
This seems more like a way to interrogate a bundle of pdfs or files, so is an AI tool, so very different to what Keep or Onenote is doing
You keep saying it can’t hallucinate but it can easily hallucinate on the information you give it.
Yup. He doesn't understand how LLMs fundamentally work yet he's ready to sell us boot camps on it.
Imagine this wil be perfect for Obsidian with all my notes 😮 fully private with lm studio
the risk of hallucination is not because of the data that it gathers at inference from rag or web search
This is retrivial augmented generation RAG?
Wow! We are just at the dawn of AI, already impressed.
only available in the us
Not available in my country sad!!!
What is the context window size for this?
Source could be 20 docs each containing 200k words
With a VPN, even a free browser extension one, you can test this outside of the U.S.
I'm invading Shanghai
It looks like Gemini charges a lot of money.
It didn’t change it as it’s only available in USA. Moving on to other products that do pretty much the same.
Was anyone able to upload pdf? pdf is not loading from me!
I have 2 questions
1- is this another product google will kill soon ?
2- can we use this tool to upload documentation, and then connect it to a chatbot so that it can answer users based on the provided documentation ?
What version of Gemini? You said the latest. Do you mean 1.5 pro? 🤷
This was released when Gemini first came out, it’s old
@@rafb145 fair enough
chat with RTX does the same thing, except it's completely offline and does not hallucinate
Don't get too used to work with this tool. Google will kill it eventually like everything else that is productive for the user but not for Google.
Should add adnotations&sketches...btw, it can upload images?!?
...and voice recordings!
This would have been better tool for me to make lecture notes for my courses if it has the ability to merge all notes together into a pdf.
If it's not open source, then I wouldn't risk it as Google's track record of pulling products and services is bad
Available in the USA only. ☝
Is it possible to like this video more than once.
So it's basically RAG with a frontend.
“Can not hallucinate” is wrong. All LLMs can. It is just limited as it is using only these sources as additional data and told as part of prompt to only use that data. It still can theoretically hallucinate.
Yea I misspoke there.
Only in US
only in US :)
But sadly it is available only in United States
They say that if you use any of Google apps and tools you don’t own your self anymore.
TH-cam is. Google app
I cant believe it says it may give inaccurate responses and its talking to local notes only, that's ridiculous.
Cracks fingers. I'm making a clone with Ollama lol.
I've tried it. It's beyond useless.
Oh thank God. 😂 I'm in NZ and was so sad I couldn't get access. I have been putting some similar tools together from home but haven't found a good local program to interrogate and organise against local files.
@maxreach What specifically on notebooklm makes it useless to you?
Thanks my guy
By the way loading Chat GPT on speech mode "you are a secretary and business advisor wirh a lot of relevant experience to any spoken topics, please transcribe and take notes of what I am going to discuss. When asked for summaries, input and better ideas please summarise for me. I want someone to talk through my thoughts and help me organise them and improve them"
Works amazingly. The interruptions can be a bit clunky socially, and it likes to summarise clearly as it goes which can be helpful.
But overall, very helpful.
I second this
im not paying for your course dude
Why google is not releasing it's products worldwide? WTF!
Best use NVIVO
