      The thing is that not even Ben could be successful with Canada. Kenny was drafted into this hell hole, so he doesn't know how to successfully get out of it. It doesn't help either that the designed plays go completely against his strengths (Using his feet to create opportunities). His play style is very similar to Mahomes b/c we saw that at Pitt, but these dumbass curl routes and 1st down runs by Najee kill every opportunity we have to gain momentum.

However, Matt Canada is a football terrorist on the level of Brandon Staley, Joe Lombardi, and Josh McDaniels. Arrest that man, throw him in football prison, and for Christ's sakes, get the Steelers an offensive coordinator who LOOKS like he knows a damn thing about how to run an offense.

    The hard part about calling plays is the scouting phase, watching film and figuring out answers to problems and how to take advantage of looks defenses use. The fact Canada keeps struggling with imo the easy part the design phase is mind boggling. I may not be an NFL coach but damn play design is easy even with how limited you are at the high school level.

      @@williamhermann6635 Compared to scouting film yes. Play design follows very simple principles how you combine, spacing, timing, and alignment is relatively easy as opposed to watching film to understand how a defense works. This isnt even a controversial statement just a fact to anyone who has been a playcaller.
      Add: Anyone can draw plays but they only become effective if you understand defensive structures which is the problem with Canada he clearly does not, and even the plays he dials up often dont make sense. He frequently has route combos that dont clearly define Pickett's reads as they arent spaced out enough.

      @mrfrostwing ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@williamhermann6635 I don't like to be this guy but, yeah, it is pretty easy. Like the guy you replied to said, trying to figure out the plays is the hard part. Once you understand what a defense is doing, it's just finding ways to get your recievers open and away from the defenders. I was the the assistant oc for my high school (I know it's different from the NFL), and I usually came up with the plays bc our OC was pretty bad at his job. 90% of the time, a reciever would be open. It's no different in the NFL. Everybody is better, so the gap doesn't change. Canada doesn't even deserve to be a high school OC. He hasn't had success in college (27-49 record) and definitely has been the worst oc in the NFL for 3 years.

    You explained this better than anyone else. People usually want to say that "The play calling doesn't excuse Kenny's poor choices!", but it is so difficult for a qb to figure out how to make a play work when your oc isn't even trying to do his job. I don't think that even Mahomes could do well in our offense. When Kenny is able to create his own plays, we score. That happens every time. Us fans are not saying fire Canada just because we don't like his play calling, it's because he literally neutralizes the offenses ability to do anything.

    Nice breakdown of the problems in the offense. But I blame Canada for this reason all players have weaknesses when your the coach you need to identify his weaknesses and scheme to hide them in your design of the offense and play calling. He does nothing to keep the defense off balance to make it easy for Kenny to read the defense. I think Matt is stubborn in the fact he wants to prove his offense is good enough and the players need to adjust rather than fitting your offense to the players you have. The routes in his offense is for QB’s who have a strong arm that makes quick decisions that’s not Kenny. Put Kenny in a offense like the 49ers or KC you’ll see a different Kenny. Even though Ben was old he couldn’t navigate that offense until he was handed the keys calling his plays to me it’s mostly Canada he needs to go.

While working with a QBs limited skill to some degree. Hell Mike Petzing has the Cardinals offense scoring more points and getting more yards per game than the Steelers. Kenny’s lack of accurate is not in his draft profile. Bro please. Per draft profile, Kenny Pickett Scouting Report
    By Charlie Campbell
    Strengths:
    Accurate passer
    Tremendous pocket composure
    Excellent decision maker
    Most of issues are a lack of trust and not have the correct information from the OC. The OC is responsible for teaching the QB how to read the play vs coverage. The real Kenny showed up in the 4th quarter vs the Ravens. He had more trust and was able to make adjustments to play calls.
    You can blame him on the play, but I am sure the OC to him to move to that hash mark. He didn’t do it on his own. Maybe the kicker want that ball place on that hash.. The illegal formation was called by the OC. As JT O’Sullivan stated I have no idea what they are telling him but he is not be coached accordingly to what most OC teach. Kenny is the right guy. Defenses love going up against the Steelers. They see the Steelers as an easy offense to dominate. And they aren’t wrong. Pickett isn’t accurate, is afraid to hang in the pocket long enough to see his routes play out, and one more thing that no one talks about is his inability to pump fake because of his small hands. He can’t fake out d backs like other QBs who simply just pump fake to get a safety to bite. It’s a crucial part of qb play and Pickett isn’t physically able to do it.

    I’m sure this video is driving the Pickett apologists insane! All we heard all offseason was “Just wait till Kenny has a full camp with the 1’s.” He got it, and virtually looks identical to last season. Pickett has got to find a way to sustain drives. He hasn’t been benched yet, but it wouldn’t surprise me. Then again, I was shocked when he came out for the second half against Baltimore. If that horrible first half didn’t get him benched maybe nothing will.

The only other play caller who has gone worse in the deep end was Byron Leftwich last season running on 1st and 2 on a penalty gimme. This is when you know that the offense absolutely has zero direction and teeth to it.

    • @ThinkingFootball
      @ThinkingFootball  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Cousins is an interesting one - He's a good QB with arm talent and accuracy to hit every spot, and goes through his progressions with good regularity.
      His faults to me are against more complex blitzing teams where he can struggle with protection checks or trap coverages - but you have to play at a good level to be being fooled by that - also when he does get hit in the pocket, he's a major fumbler of the ball - and losing the turnover battle is so important
      Football is also a team sport, more than any, and as important as a QB is, they probably only account for 30/40% of the result of the team - He's currently playing really well, but Brian Flores is literally blitzing every other down because he doesn't have the corners to play a real defense
      Or take for example the Seahawks Vikings game in 2020 - this game always sticks in my mind because Cousins drove them all the way down - got them to 4th and 1, killed the pass play to a run, and Alexander Mattison had a WIDE THE FUCK OPEN gap, and then just ran into the back of his Oline - sometimes, like life, you can do everything in football, and it still doesn't come out in your favour.

    Need one of these about Pete Carmichael. He’s been statistically worse than Canada in most ways but one thing they have in common is that they both have finally started modernizing with things like motion, but for whatever reason neither use it during important plays and situations. Pete has the benefit of having coached alongside Sean Payton for 15 years and having Brees for the same time period. I’m not gonna call for his head like other fans around the league but he needs to improve or understand that he needs a new situation

      I think Carmichael is just along for the ride with an equally inept HC in Dennis Allen. Hell when you got hardcore 'Aints fans telling you that Allen as a HC can improve, you tell the moment that can start is if he cares to change his staff. That includes Carmichael who sorta gets by on offense with big receiver games from Olave or Shahid.

    Question: is the offensive line weak, or is Najee Harris the second coming of Trent Richardson?

    • @christianlong5152
      @christianlong5152 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thing is we are expecting him to run when its so clearly obvious we are running. if the recivers bunch on the right, its a run, the texans and raiders game is a prime example of that. Najee not only is not getting holes, but it being forced to run when theres no lead blocker and 7 guys in the box. In year 1, najee was a volume back, and received alot because big ben couldnt throw 40 yards, so he dumped alot to najee. but now hes not getting nearly as many receptions and is being forced to run when we clearly should motion out of the play. now najee isnt perfect, he doesnt have good vision and hes not particular fast and that hurts him more

      @@jaedynstjuste1708 I know, he's close to 4, but there's a psychological judgment involved if a runner doesn't average 4 yards per carry. It might be an Alabama thing. Saban gets the best OL prospects in the country, so RBs with less than stellar natural gifts can excel, but when they get to the NFL, they're stymied by world-class defenses up against poor offensive linemen.

  • @cidp.7819
    @cidp.7819 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Matt Canada has no business coaching in the NFL. None. He doesn't understand what an NFL offense is and is incapable of adjusting when things don't go the way hi imagined they would. Having said this, let's not forget that when he was promoted to OC, people were happy about it because it meant kicking out randy fichtner. Tomlin cannot be allowed to hire the coordinators anymore. He literally let's anyone do it as long as they're already working for the steelers. He's so afraid to bring someone from the outside that will challenge him that he keeps pushing assistant coaches into a job they're not capable of doing. We keep pouring it on Canada, and rightly so, but terrel Austin isn't any better. The D can't stot run, can't cover wide receivers and depends on minkah to be a strong s, free s and linebacker at the same time. If it weren't for tj watt being a generational talent, we'd see just how bad the defensive side of the ball is too. Mike Tomlin is wasting a lot of young talent just by fostering mediocrity at every level.

    Canada has 2021 and 2022 to prove his worth as an NFL OC. He failed miserably. Tomlin decides to keep in for 2023 anyway. Therefore, the problem is not Canada.....it's Tomlin. I supported Tomlin for years, but his time is up and it's time for a new General. The organization is fractured and I think it's because of Tomlin.

    Way too harsh on Pickett, 49ers was his worst game accuracy wise, everything else before that was pretty good. This offense has the same problems it had with Big Ben in it. Any Qb would look bad in this concept, also you have to understand the trickle down effect, Canada runs the same 4 concepts and calls plays repeatedly, if in the earlier parts in the game the play didn’t work, ur not trusting it later. Also his 1st couple reads are different from other offenses, he’s clearly being taught to do things one way that’s ass backwards💯

    Trying to establish and run and getting the ball out quickly should be the focus. Give Pickett easy reads and throws. Sticks, outs, drags, flats, mesh, picks, something simple. Steelers want to run these PA plays when they cant make teams respect the run. Then these long developing plays with a shotty line. Ball needs to be ran and out of Picketts hands quickly.

    Honestly, if you have followed Canada throughout his career, a lot of this doesn't look like his offense at all. A lot of cool run and play-action concepts are missing. He's not an OC who just uses pro spread or straight up spread pass. So no, he's never been a mcvay/shanahan motion type of schemer. But he does a lot of misdirection w/ play action and motions to help the run game to open up the pass game. This is just shocking. Is it Sullivan, Tomlin or even Fichtner's old scheme coming into play??
    As for Pickett - yeah - thought he was a bad pick. I have family in Pittsburgh - everyone there actually likes Pickett as he's a charismatic personality, but he wasn't a big recruit out of HS, had luck with a top OMind in Whipple his last yr in college and definitely shouldn't have been a top pick. More of a developmental into a solid starter or good backup. And he's not even that yet...

  • @mikeansley5306

    The Steelers offense looks atrocious. Even today (Oct 22), they have been lucky to win four games. The scheme is really predictable. Najee Harris hasn't lived up to expectations, and the o-line depth & injuries have made running the ball difficult. Their RB depth isn't really there either.
    They become pass dependent, and injuries hurt them there too. If Diontae Johnson is healthy, they look to him. When Pat Friermuth is healthy, same.
    It's funny how the problem, according to fans not too long ago, was an injured/slower Big Ben. That isn't an excuse anymore, and neither is the crap job that Canada does.
    But the Steelers won't do anything to make coaching changes, because that's not what they're known for. As long as Tomlin is the lead man, Canada stays, and so does the silly stuff we've seen in recent weeks. Pittsburgh will win thanks to the strength of their defense, or in spite of the awful scheme on offense.
