How to use Crow and Owl Locator Calls

  • Locator calls are great to make those gobblers shock gobble and give away their position. I love to use the owl locator call in the early morning (grey light), day time and late evening (grey light). The crow call I use during the daylight hours only and is my fall back if the owl hooter doesn't get one to sound off. These two are just a couple that I use, but I have seen car doors, coyote howls, airplanes, goose honks/calls, wood peckers, thunder.... make a gobbler shock gobble. Best to use a locator call versus a turkey call to try and get a gobbler to give away its position. I hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for visiting the channel. Best of luck in the woods.

    How often are you calling with the owl calling? Intervals?? And do you use both at different times? I really enjoyed the informative video!! Thank you in advance! 🙏🏽

      In the mornings I like to wait until gray light to start owl calling and will do it maybe every 5 minutes. Until it’s pretty light. During daylight hours I’ll just do owl calling occasionally if I am running and gunning to see about a shock gobble and it’s about the same with the crow call. I’ll do it when I get close to an area I think might be good or maybe relocating 100-200 yards before I actually start using the turkey call again. I don’t want to start drawing a bird on with the turkey call unless I am setup and ready so I use the locator call initially or if not setup yet.

      @@PassionfortheWildandWonderful ahhhh ok!! Makes sense good sir!! Now I see what you mean. So don’t Turkey call until you are set up and in position. I’ve often been told to owl call the evening before the hunt and set up to see if the gobbler is within the area. What’s your thoughts on this approach or technique??

      I really like to roost a gobbler the night before. It really increases your chance of success to know where the bird is the night before to setup your approach the next morning and to be able to setup close to the bird to have a good chance of harvesting when he flys down or shortly after to help ensure you are between him and hens. I will use the owl call as it is getting dark again maybe every 5-10 minutes and can sometimes get them to gobble in the dark.

      Do not turkey call until you are setup. If on the move and you are turkey calling you risk walking up on a bird already coming to the call. I prefer to move, owl call or crow call, then decide to sit and turkey call or keep moving. But if I plan to call I at least have a tree picked out close by before turkey calling so if I get a close by gobble, I have a quick place to drop and setup.

    Have you had an opportunity to use these in conjunction with your cellular cams? Do you get enough turkey activity on the cams to know roughly where to start with these calls? Or is it dependent on something like property size?

      Appreciate you watching and your question. I don’t use locator calls in conjunction with my cameras. I use them in evenings trying to locate/roost birds and same in the morning just before first light primarily. If I am doing run and gun setups after first light I use the locator calls to help determine a birds position without calling to them or possibly pulling them my way so I can pinpoint and setup first close to them and then call to them with a turkey call. I would still use the locator call even on a smaller property if I wanted to see where they might be on a neighbors piece or direction of travel in case it can help me on the property I am allowed to hunt.

    Great content! Thank you so much. Which turkey caller would you recommend for early season? Crow ? Owl? Hawk? In Quebec so we finish hunting at noon! Thanks

      Thanks for watching and your question.
      My go to is the owl call. It can be used anytime day or night. If I can’t strike a shock gobble out of a bird during the day with the owl call, I will switch to the crow call. This would be the same time to try the hawk also if unsuccessful with owl or crow. I think the crow and hawk during daylight hours probably carries further. The short of it, when covering ground trying to strike a bird, locator calls help prevent you from prematurely calling a bird your direction before you are ready/setup and helps minimize the chance of bumping a bird.
      Also check out the video I have coming out this weekend on various owl calls I have and what each sounds like.

    How do you get the vibrato in the owl call

    • @PassionfortheWildandWonderful
      @PassionfortheWildandWonderful  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching and your question. I do it by relaxing the end or tip of my tongue and allowing it to vibrate against the roof of my mouth as I blow the air across my tongue and into the call.
