I think this is his best role. He has a character, which he has played in several films (Jaws, The Competition, etc.), but this was the film where he got to fully explore its subtleties and emotional logic. He really deserved this Oscar.
Yes, he won for his performance in this flick. He did a great job and if I am not mistaken, he was the youngest male lead role that ever won at the time. I do not know if anyone beat him on that. There was a tv remake on this movie with Patricia Hayden and Jeff Daniels. Even tho Daniels is a good actor, I'm sorry, no one can hold a candle to Mr Dreyfuss' portryal

Adrian Brody won for 'The Pianist" and became the youngest Best Actor winner supplanting Dreyfuss.
