Right, IMHO Roine is a much better musician (composer and arranger), I'd say a great one, than a guitar virtuoso. Although he plays guitar as I'd like ;)
If more people listened to and were emotionally uplifted by this song (and songs like it), our world would be a better place. I guess we just need to... shine 😉... and keep making music to "shine the way."
Maybe it's just me that sees this song for what it is. A song for you asking you to hold the light, ...no matter the darkness, ...to find the light inside you, and shine your Love for all to see. They know if all the people listened to this with their hearts and felt these things, there would be no more wars, or starvation, or hate. To see that all men can feel these things and asking us to shine together. I Love this song so much...
Absolutely brilliant song. Love the Indian floruishes, the mellotron bits. The middle eight Portnoy vocal, great bass, beautiful tone to the solo. Wonderful, wonderful song.
Mike's got one of those frreakish memories for that kind of stuff. He did an interview not too far back when he said that he just has the ability to remember all of these different songs and can pretty much just show up and play with little or no rehearsal.
He has definitely been one of my biggest drumming influences, and it certainly helped me to get better at playing drums by listening to him when I was a teenager. 😎🥁
wow, big prog rock fan since the 70s but never heard of Transatlantic, don't recall where I heard of them, but finally decided to listen to something from them while looking for some music at work last night. I made my co-workers listen to this song at least 10 times in a row. Love discovering "new" bands/music.
I love it. I love Neil's ballads sandwiched between the epics. Neil has always been my port in the storm. He's a songwriter that writes from his heart.

Can't believe all the moaners. this is a beautiful song with all the usual features of the Transatlantic ballad that appears on most albums (and on Spocks ones before that). I have no doubt the rest of the album will be full of the magic of the others. That's one of their strengths - the ability to pull of a variety of styles in one album. Listen to the whole thing before whinging! If you don't like any of it, buy something different! As for Mike Portnoy - all power to his elbow for sharing his talent around - what a guy!
This ballad really got everything a ballad needs. Acoustic guitar with just enough reverb, a great choir and last but not least the great and heavy guitar solo near the ending. I hope that these guys some day will come to Norway and have a concert! I saw Neal Morse and his band in Oslo this summer and I must say that even though I'm not a religious person I actually sat on the bus back home that day and felt like I was traveling back from a visit to heaven :)
Another ballad I love is the title song on Bridge Across Forever. The title song is so beautiful even though it's just Neal Morse singing and playing piano. You should also check out his former band Spock's Beard.
I remember the first time I heard Transatlantic. I was in Newbury Comics just looking around and saw this SMPT disc and thought, "hmmm, what's this?" I saw that Mike Portnoy was a member of this project, so I took a shot. I got in the car, opened the insert up and started reading a little. Then I saw that dreaded word next to Neal's name.... "vocals." NOOOO! But, I thought, "well, I'll still give it a chance. From the moment I heard "In a state of fallen grace..." I was hooked! Here's a voice that made my ears smile, and the music was fantastic, as well! These guys work SO WELL together! Spock's Beard wasn't the same after Neal left ("Snow" was awesome). The imagery of someone growing in their faith that's prevalent in Neal's solo work, as well as more recent TA material, makes it all the more worth listening to. Sure, "Shine" is atypically simple for these guys, but they somehow still make it gorgeous.
Liked this arrangement a lot. The singing duties were passed around. The gtr solo is something we have all heard a 1000 times but I would still want to see it live.
this song is gorgeous. not sure why people think it's a weak track. Music video isn't all that bad either, the solo is the only bad part but now that I've had that cleared up for me, it doesn't bother me so much. apparently his recorded solo was improvised and he forgot what he played exactly for the video so it didn't' sync up quite right

I think this song is as great as "we all need some light", I also think the guys are not losing the point here, mainly because every Transatlantic song have being made to elevate somehow the listeners, it's also what TFK does in every album they release, and they're not christian. I think Progressive music as a whole have been made to take u to another state of mind, it doesn't matter what religion u are.
When i first came across this video i didn't think much of it musically being a progressive rush dream theater, transatlantic fan etc. but when my mom was dying of cancer in 2016 this song took on, and still does take on a new meaning. maybe to the negative comments from people who dont understand, play this video because it fits perfect when you lose some one you love, and you will FEEL what this song is for. p.s. some of you can bark at Christ as much as you wish, but remember this, he doesn't bark he BITES back! i know from countless criticism the disciplinary hand of God

Muchos quieren ver a estos maestros del rock hacer chingaderas harto progresivas que desafíen los limites de la habilidad humana, claro que pueden hacerlo, pero no es el caso en esta agrupación, muchos creen que no explotan su virtuosismo musical o técnico, y se decepcionan por así decir, el pedo es que este tipo de personas esperan ver grupos como transatlantic competir con dream theater u otros, NO SON LO MISMO, es un concepto diferente, si REALMENTE sabes apreciar la musica, encontraras excelentes pasajes en todos los tracks de Kaleidoscope, si eres un simple progfan, mejor escucha al Dream, Circus Maximus, DOMINICI u otros que hagan solos de 15minutos y que jueguen con 20 tipos de ritmos diferentes en cada canción. Transatlantic es fantástico, así como Flying Colors, en lo personal aprecio y agradezco a músicos como estos que se atreven a explorar otros confines de la musica, de los sentimientos, de la composición, sin caer en el cliché del rockero progresivo virtuosisimo promedio.

Boy -- the anti-religious bigots showed up in force on the comments of this video. The video was a cheap production, I'll give you that. In the context of the rest of "Kaleidoscope," this song fits well, so, to judge it as a stand alone, and to throw rocks because of its spiritual overtones and lyrics is to understand neither the album NOR the songwriter, Neal Morse. Neal is a Christian. Get over it. His band members don't seem to object. If anything, it has contributed to his creativity, productivity and virtuosity over the years. In the context of his work, and that of this album and Transatlantic as a group, this song works, and works well. The video -- not the greatest, but it will do. Don't like this tune? Well, wait for the next one. The beat will pick up, the lyrics will change, and maybe God won't be so evident, and you won't feel so awkward, angst-ridden, offended and [gulp] guilty.
I don't hate the lyrics either, it can be hit or miss but especially in the last 10 years I feel Neal Morse has become far more consistent with his lyrics. This is a beautiful example of this.

I would like remain to all critics of this song, that this song is IMHO similar (and it has beautiful guitar solo in it) to, "We all need some light now" from the 1st album or "Bridge Across Forever" from the 2nd, which are albums you all like. It is song for you guys to get some rest between more complicated and epic compositions...

This guitar solo is perfection. It has a feeling that few guitarrists have, as it reminded me a lot of Steve Rothery's type of solos.
