Honestly, you are a hero. I had to read this book as a class assignment, feeling indifferent about the topic because I have an aunt who lives in a group home and is diagnosed with schizophrenia. She often makes up lies about the family, and we are distant from her now. But because of your book, I aim to reach out to her and see her through a different lens. Thank you!

I appreciate you Evelyn Saks. So glad to hear you. You deserve to be listened to. You are so brave. You’re message gives me courage too. I hope that I heal because I haven’t. I have hypothyroidism and was recently hospitalized a short time ago. I have also heard about people who died in restraints. Not only people with schizophrenia get restrained. Other people do too. I was told that I can’t leave the hospital until I became more social able. It was ridiculous that cigarettes were given to teenagers.
My narcissist relative is all for mental institutions, having a domestic violence restraining order on her husband. Probably for her attention. You would absolutely hate having a narcissist in your family if you’re mentally ill. I was a housekeeper in a nursing home. You don’t want to know what it’s like. I hope you are doing well. I feel like I didn’t choose what I want to be. Meaning that forget college. Go to stupid hospital.
I am fromPoland and also suffer from schizofrenia. Your book is great. I wish I had such an amazing life as You. In Poland is more difficult, there is a lot of discrimination to people with mental illnesses. Thank You Elyn!! You've helped me a lot.

Anka Pol. I agree. I believe that people with all types of psychiatric disabilities get discriminated. I was driven away from what someone explained to me was narcissism, but I want to learn how to accept her, but she scares me. Maybe I need to learn more about my relative who tells me she’s prettier than me, smarter, nicer and just perfect. I worry about getting manipulated. When you put a bipolar woman with a narcissist, you get a disaster, but I want to love her like I used to. I get extremely irritated and impulsive. I say things without thinking. I tried antidepressants and they worked. Maybe I need to go back on them. But on this roller coaster ride, it’s hard to figure out unpredictable behavior. Deep down inside, I love my relative, but I feel so manipulated by her. She was never in a psychiatric hospital, but she was in a medical hospital. She had a sad life. So I guess that narcissists are sad people all of the time. Myself, I am up enjoying myself at 2:00 am. My relative says that she would love to be able to watch television at 2:00 am. I believe the grass is greener on the other side for her. I rather have bipolar disorder because I can admit it and I reached out for help. My relative will never reach out for help and make my life more miserable without knowing how she’s doing it. Thank you for sharing your experience. We aren’t our diagnosis. My relative is caring and has a respectful side. So she has a strength. But she was forever making me feel stupid since I was a kid.

I searched high and low for her memoir and in the end, finally managed to find it tucked away in a relatively old bookstore in Hong Kong (Born & bred Singaporean here). It was worth all the trouble, and has become my favorite read because it's not like any other book. She describes schizophrenia so plainly, it's just so accessible, even to someone who isn't mentally ill. And I really love how she discussed snippets of the law/ethical concerns pertaining to a patient's needs and wants - Something I had struggled to find the "correct" answer to upon being a psychology student last year.
Brilliant woman. I wish I had knew of her name earlier, I missed out on writing so many essays about "heroes" of whom I didn't sincerely care for when it could've been her. Truly inspiring
+Eunice Tan The rule of law dictates the a patient has a constitutional right of privacy to deny medical care, however when switched around, a care facility cannot deny and in doing so, would breach their “duty of care” to the person. - What else do you need to know about law and ethics pertaining to persons with mental disease?

Insightful interview concerning her journey through madness and ethical considerations of the mentally ill in the prison system. However, I found the reporter to interrupt her too often and it was evident that this bothered her and made it hard for her to continue her train of thought at some points.
I viewed this video ,was inspired, soon I'll be attending psychosocial rehabilitation and there I'll be learning so much more. I'm grateful . It's a good change for me.

Oh man the very last thing she said is really funny, saying how she feels like she is less crazy that some of her neurotic colleagues. Ppl undiagnosed are still crazy AF.

I liked your comment, but I think indicating freewill as an illusion overstates the case a little. Certainly our biochemistry, heredity and environment narrow the course on which we run, but choices remain for the individual to make. Perhaps it would be more accurate to describe freewill as a matter of degree rather than an abject illusion...
