This is so overwhelming 😭 I want to feed my cat better but i feel so overwhelmed right now with all this information...but i know i need to take it one step at a time
I feed my cat am.and 5 pm. Dry in am about one third of a cup and a half a can of friskies wet food. Sometimes a little snack but not often. He is very long--a big kitty.
Thank you so much, Jess! My super picky 14 year old would only eat the same Authority brand kibble they fed him at the shelter when he was a kitten! Plus, a couple decades ago, vets always said to free feed dry and avoid wet food, so I thought I was doing the right thing. A few times I tried to change him to a better quality kibble or get him to eat treats NOPE...he would rather starve than change. Then I recently learned the advice about wet vs dry flipped. I also noticed his tendency toward dehydration, so it makes sense. Your advice about meal times was the GAME CHANGER! Also going really slow with the changes. We are nearly done completing his breakfast meal transition. He started out eating around the wet food, but now he is eating it. He has already gained .5 pounds (which is needed) and looks less dehydrated. He is still not interested in treats, but we are on our way with wet food now. Thank you! 💕❤💕
Thanks to this video, I was finally able to get my cat to switch from a low quality dry food to a high quality dry food and finally to wet food! If you have a very picky cat, it is possible. Took a week and a half of adding a small amount of the new better dry food for my cat to finally eat it (he did spend a week and a half laboriously eating around the new dry food, spitting it out, and lots of meowing in protest!) I was ready to give up, and suddenly, he started eating the new food. Transitioning to wet food is going much faster. Thank you for this detailed video, it was essential for making the switch happen.
Thank you for your testimonial! I'm so happy that it worked well. It's funny, the cats usually accept it as soon as we are ready to give up. They can pick up on that energy. I'm glad you were patient with him and transitioned gradually ♥️
Michelle, I’m currently embarking on this journey. Did you start introducing the new food immediately or did you stick with the old food until he got into routine meal times? My cat currently eats Iams Dry Food and I’m wondering if he stays on this until we get to the food topper stage?
This is so helpful! It took two months of sneaking tiny bits of wet food into kibble to get my one cat off of it. And thank you for talking about BCS! I work kind of adjacent to vet med and people always want me to give them a strict number for their cats weight and I have a healthy 8 lb cat and a healthy 12 lb cat, but they both eat the amount for a 10 lb cat because my little guy is so active and my bigger girl must have a slow metabolism.
Thank you for sharing your experience! And you're absolutely right. People ask me "how much do I feed my cat" and I always tell them there is no magic number. Every cat is different!
My American shorthair spayed female cat weighed 20 pounds. My mom feeds her wet friskies in the morning and dry food at night, 1 cup. I switched her to authority wet food and authority dry food, divided into 3 diff times a day and I make sure her water fountain is clean and running. She’s lost 4 pounds and isn’t begging for food as often but I still want to make sure I feed her actual natural food. I don’t want my cat to be sick 4-5 years from now:( I want her to live her best cat life. And all the other kitties too so thanks for your work and for sharing it!!
THANK YOU, JESS! Thank you for this channel!!! My cats deserve better than Fancy Feast "medleys". It's the only brand they enjoy, though. We tried making slow transitions to healthier food last year, starting with Avoderm (didn't work out too well). They liked Wellness brand a bit more, but 50% of the time they ignore it or begrudgingly take 2 bites. Going to make a new plan for them once again. It's work, but their long-term health is everything to me. Thank you for making feline nutrition easier for us confused cat parents to understand and implement 😍
1:46 yes ! I learned this from my mom who does this with her cat and it works, most of the time lol. Definitely worth doing. The energy and intent comes through, and they have stong vibe radars ❤️🐈
My 8 month old kitten is currently in intensive care on a drip because of an out of control kidney infection that has spread to his lungs. He's not eating or drinking and we've had no choice but to syringe feed him every 2 hours with kitten formula and Urgent Care wet food mixed together. But he didn't improve and the antibiotic injection he was given just isn't working because he's so severely dehydrated. He's in hospital now on a drip, finally getting some urgent fluids in him, and I pray that it isn't too little too late. After looking into how this whole thing could've started in the first place, I looked at his diet, which was solely dry. Bare in mind it wasn't cheap stuff from the local shop, it was expensive online only stuff that you had to order. I thought I was giving him the best but I see now how gravely mistaken I was. If he survives this ordeal, it will be a lesson learned for me and after watching your other videos, I now know not to just pick up any wet food but to be really studying the ingredients as well. I'll be completely overhauling his food (gradually of course) starting with stocking up on high quality wet food.
I started trying to upgrade what I feed my cat before I found your TH-cam channel and website so I had already replaced her treats before I started improving her food. (Her absolute favorite treat is diced raw chicken tenders) She's on about ½kibble ½wet food right now and we're working on getting rid of the kibble completely (she's very addicted) and moving to all raw. Thank you so much for all the information, insights, and inspiration you've given me! 😀❤️
This was so helpful. My cat is underweight and really picky. I tried working up to a higher quality of food but I went back to fancy feast food just so that she is eating something. She is also addicted to treats. She is going to the vet soon and I will discuss her weight issues. I’m also on a limited income so it’s hard for me to buy expensive cat food. I will improve her diet within my budget. If you could do a video on budget foods/treats/raw meats that would be very helpful.❤
Well I've got both of my cats transitioned over to 90% Raised Right food so far! Took a month . Which isn't bad they took on to it pretty quick because I used a couple of tricks and it worked really well
I take my girls outside for at LEAST 45 minutes a day usually over a hour. My last cat died from diabetes so I take my new girls outside for exercise. I also find since I got two kittens together as a bonded pair they naturally play and run around so much more than my single cat did.
Kittens have so much more energy than adults, in general! They are furballs of energy lol that's great that your baby gets some outdoors time. I took Jericho outside in the past but stopped. So I am gradually reintroducing that!
Hii! New subscriber here! This is so overwhelming😫, but I really want to feed my cat better and organized but and this feels like a lot work to do.. but I know I have to do it for my cat's health to be healthier, thank you so much for these informative videos about cats!🥺💖 Despite keeping up with my studies I'll try my best to be a better owner for my cats to be healthier and happier Thank you so much friend! 🙂💖
Thanks for your support!! There are chapters - start step 1 today and do one per month. As I said in the beginning, plan at least 4 months. Next month come back for step 2 (:
I would be happy to find a nutritional kibble and wet food my poor allergic baby would relish and not break out with. Yes, I have watched your videos, and I will never give up trying.
I just applied to adopt an adult cat ,who according to the foster mom only eats meow mix , and refuses nutritious food. This makes me nervous as my previous cat passed away from kidney disease. If I do end up adopting her or any other cat, I will follow this guide. My previous cat started doing better on Darwin's but it was too late. I'm on SSDI, but from my calculations it's about $60-70/month for a raw food diet, which saves vet fees and heartache in the long run.
Thank you for looking at the long-term savings!! You're definitely right. And this guide is formulated for picky cats so come back to it whenever you decide to adopt 😸
Holy crap I have 6 cats relying on me atm, three from next door where the ppl don’t feed them .. I’ve managed to desex all bar one who is pregnant atm 😓... she’s so little I hope she only has two or three babies .. if I did all this I’d be so proud of myself but it’s a bit much .. I’m struggling to look after all of them they have cost me 5k in the last few years just at the vet .. I do feed them kangaroo (I’m in Australia) and lots of things like mince chicken and turkey but I do still give them dry biscuits from one of those manufactures.. 😓 it’s just horrible we live in a world where money is more important than making a food for our beloved pets that’s actually really good for them.
I completely understand that with multiple cats, it adds up. I actually just posted a guide on homemade cat food here: www.caticles.com/homemade-cat-food/ - the video comes out next month (: But it's wonderful that you're helping them out!
Cats do understand when we speak Jess, I'll be sitting on the couch and I will ask her if she wants to go outside, before I even get up she's already waiting at the door.
Omg I am so overwhelmed! Haha your video is so clear but still, I don’t know how to start lol I just got a bunch of wet food for the cat that I’ll be adopting but he eats mostly dry food and his foster mom told me he is super picky about wet food. Oh gosh, will be a long journey.
Thank you for your kind words! I use a raised food stand that came with stainless steel plates and bowls. It's on amazon. I believe I have a link in the description with all of Jericho's supplies.
Hey Jess. My son Grayson is still on the commercial canned wet food with the addition of raw paws various freeze dried foods incorporated in his meals. I am happy that he is taking to these new raw foods so well !! Je is overweight as i mentioned b4 but now, after about 2 months, he is going longer between meals w/o the usual checking his dish or begging for food. He is food obsessed so this is a great change. He seems to have more energy too.
That's great!! I'm so happy he's taking to the new food and has better eating habits. Slow and steady and you'll continue to see more progress. Good that he has more energy for play too! I bet he's happy about that (:
I feel very stressed about the length of time involved here, some cats lives are depending on transitioning now. People are addicted to dry 'food' and I'm so sick of vets pushing food that destroys cats internal organs. My cats transitioned quickly, some cats will not survive four months!!
That's going to be hard. My vet always recommends vet brand food . He will look at me like I am stupid . If I say I want to do freeZe dried,👁️ I have two dogs and over 10 cats rescues. What do you think I can do any ideas? I want to start with the freeze dried toppers. Help dear❤️
We've been feeding our Sunny (who just turned 6 months today) Ziwi Peak (varieties---Lamb, Venison, Mackeral & Lamb--but with the Mackeral & Lamb only doing it maybe 1-2x per week as I just don't know about the fish thing. Hear it is bad for cats. Also give him Feline Natural Chicken and Lamb, Venison and Lamb, Nature's Logic Chicken. Tried the Rabbit--he wouldn't touch it. He now gets NO kibble. Had been giving him the Orijen kibble, but despite it being a high quality dry, just wanted to get away from dry completely. So far, he eats a good 5 meals a day. I don't know if right or wrong, but we will put the wet(canned) in his stainless steel bowl. If he finishes it all up, then add more. Just don't want any sitting out too long. According to canned directions, a kitten should be eating an entire can (6.5oz) plus another ounce for the day/night. Last week he weighed 5lb. 4oz. Yesterday he weighed 6 lbs. Oh, this was a treat recommended & Sunny goes nuts over it, but I try to only give him maybe 4-6 pieces a day (they are not big pieces) Duck Liver Freeze-Dried Grain Free Treats, 0.9 oz.
Happy Birthday Sunny!! That's great that he gets so much variety! With fish, what you're feeding just has a small bit in it. But the main protein source is lamb, so that's fine. And yes, kittens need so much more food!! It's totally fine to offer more if he's still hungry. They need to grow! As long as he doesn't scarf and barf, of course. Freeze-dried livers are excellent treats!
I have four rescue cats all rescued at 2-3 weeks old. Two of them, Gizmo & Sonic, just turned one. Then there’s Simba, he is two and my first rescue, Luna, is four. They all eat Proplan wet and dry. I have tried Nulo but, they try and bury it… actually they bury everything unless it’s Proplan. I am going to start your regimen first thing. They are all so healthy now and two of them Simba and Gizmo are part Bengal. I just want them healthy forever! I’m doing it for myself so I feel they deserve it too. Where can I buy the products you use? The goat milk powder etc…?
Stage by stage, step by step, I needed this, much appreciated Jess. I kept telling my vet 'it's all muscle', my vet says 'He's fat'. He wasn't insulted, fortunately, the vet only speaks Japanese, my cat is bilingual. English and Cat.
my cat has been leaking poop all over everything in my house for several weeks. she had a cough which we went to the vet for, and they gave her a dewormer but she's still leaking all over everything. I can't afford to take her back to the vet. I hope switching the food solves her problem.
My cat has a problem too like this. Vet suspected IBD, still trying to get her stools firmed up. Trying out freeze dried food to see if this would help. So far, no OTC meds for cats has
I've read that pumpkin powder can help with stools whether it is too liquid or constipation. Just keep the changes slow and gradual to avoid further GI problems.
Thank goodness my. Cat is a Ferrol that comes 3times daily and will eat anything dry, wet and fresh, she is in beautiful condition and loves cheese as a treat. This sounds complicated.
This sounds like a full time job. Jess sweetheart, can I hire you to care for my cats? With my busy schedule I'm lucky to eat on time or eat at all let alone feeding my kitties. I really appreciate your info, it is very informative and educational but I need something more less of a hassle to feed my felines. I just want to open a healthy pack and feed my fur babies and move on. Nevertheless, thanks for your input and teaching me what I didn't know. Cheers!
Hi Jess, I could not see your opinion about Wellness wet cat food. My cats were on feline natural but don’t like it anymore, what is your thoughts about wellness cat food please?
I'm cheating the system with my kitten. Since he's about 14-15 weeks we've been feeding him different brands and flavors or wet food almost daily so he has the chance to experience all the different flavors. We use dry food as a base, mixing it all up and adding additional water, so there's still something consistent.
Aside from the treats transition, since my cat also eats wet food can I just gradually decrease the the kibble until my cat is on wet only and then move to the raw food?
I have a six month old male kitten that I’ve had for three months, I’ve gone through three different brands of dry foods, several wet, trying to fix his terrible smelling, loose stool. He has an excellent appetite, loves his food, sometimes throws up I think because he eats too fast. His fecal sample came back negative for parasites. All of his dishes are stainless steel and get sanitized daily. I called my vet yesterday and she said he might not be able to handle the high protein foods I’ve been feeding him, suggesting Science Diet or a prescription food if it doesn’t get better. I currently feed him Halo dry food with a wet food topper in the evenings. She suggested I stop giving him wet food to see if he starts pooping better. My husband asked me something interesting, is it possible that despite being obligate carnivores, domestic cats are becoming less accustomed perhaps to the high protein quality foods? This is just a question for engagement. Thank you for your content. PS Before anyone comes for me, I’m fully supportive of a raw diet, and have introduced raw toppers to my kitten. I would love to get away from kibble entirely. Every vet I’ve talked to has tried to talk me out of feeding a raw diet, which I have done via Darwin’s in the past and am looking to get back to that diet. I really do not like that so many vets tell people to feed SD and so many other faux healthy foods.
Stinky poops are usually due to inappropriate ingredients in food. For example, Jericho eats all raw and his poops don't smell at all. Another issue with kibble is that it's so dry. So the stomach swells with extra water to try and digest the food then the kibble pieces swell up and the cat vomits. Cats rely on food for moisture so it makes no sense to me that vets say "no feed dry food instead of wet" - prescription or not. High protein quality foods are very hard to come by if we're talking about dry food and canned foods. Both are cooked and pressurized multiple times so the manufacturer has to add back nutrients. Plus kibble needs carbs and starches otherwise the ingredients would fall apart. Cats are still obligate carnivores - I'm working on a video about this actually. Apparently cats "adopted" humans around 12,000 years ago which is nothing compared to dogs. Wolves adopted humans like 200 million years ago lol and the only reason cats are pets is because farmers liked the free pest control. So moving them indoors doesn't change their nutritional needs.
Just wanted to chime in and say that I am in your exact spot! 6 month old male kitten, absolutely nasty poops, fecal tests are coming back negative for parasites. Hoping you find the best solution for your kitty.
@@jesscaticles wow Only took a few day of putting a few spoon fulls of wet on her dry food. Now she will eat whitherever is in her dish. She prefers wet.. using the last of dry 2-1 wet ratio. Worked great
I remember seeing a spreadsheet option for transitioning that was by amount at each feeding but now I can only find the one by calorie amounts. Are they the same depending on what you are putting in the initial D1 field? Thanks in advance.
I have no problem going from kibble (Purina Pro Lamb & rice) to wet (wellness cat food). But, do I have to make the change to one of the flavors ( beef, turkey, chicken, green tripe..) at the time? I'm asking because my cat tolerates beef, but hates green tripe. So I think I have to transition to green tripe in order for him to eat that specific flavor. Should I have to make the transition to tolerate every flavor? or once he tolerate raw beef he can eat any raw meat? Sometimes my cat seems to be tired of eating the same flavor every day.... he can eat beef for two days and the one the 3rd day he refuses...and when he refuses to eat he can stand 3 days without food!!! (heavy fasting..)
A great insight Jess..Thanks !! I want to move from branded cat foods to homemade cat foods for my nursing mum cat; so that her week old kitties can get the best of nutrition as well. Is there a faster way to the transition as a 4 month transition seems like may defeat the purpose. Appreciate your feedback and advise. Thanks again.
Pregnant and lactating queens need slightly different nutrition than an average adult cat. So I would not suggest homemade food unless you are working with a nutritionist that can meet those needs. Your queen passes on nutrients to the babies so you don't want any deficiencies. And no, this transition plan is as quick as it can be. Cats are very sensitive to dietary changes and also very picky about changes.
I’m bummed right now as one of my cats had zero problems eating raw and now he’s getting more picky and the recipe hasn’t changed. They eat 2 or 3 different proteins. Ugh so stressful. I even top it with fortiflora. I really don’t want to make a career out is this. They still eat dry half the day, really reluctant to take that away at night. I noticed when I started taking it away during the day when they eat raw he started getting pickier.
I have a couple of questions. 1. What do I do if I can't weigh my cat? My cat panics when I try to pick her up, so I don't. And she won't jump into boxes. She can't be lured with food as food is just not at all interesting to her. 2. How do I manage opened canned food? When transitioning I won't be using the whole can with 24 hours obviously. Do I portion it out and freeze it? 3. What if my cat eats around the new food or stops eating when encountering the new food? Since I'll be starting with dry food, there is no way to mix the current and new food like you could with wet. And yes my cat does notice, she is super picky and she will just simply not eat. (she is know to prefer lying in the sun instead of eating, even though we feed her meals. Even with her current food she sometimes has a meal she barely touches) 4. My cats don't eat treats, can I just skip that step then? 5. What do I look for in food toppers? I don't have the exact products available to me, but the site I use normally does have some supplements available. Is that the same or different?
Here you go! 1. Ask your vet to weigh your cat. And figure out a way you can make it work for you. Use toys, catnip, whatever your cat likes. Find a food she does like and use that. 2. Refrigerate or freeze it. 3. This is why you use food toppers and treats first so that your cat gets used to eating better quality ingredients. 4. If you want! 5. Simple ingredients, meat and organs.
@@jesscaticles the process is going much easier than I thought. They are super enthusiastic and just now both cats finished their meal in 1 go. Day 1 Sky was a bit hesitant on the new smell and taste with her food, but today she was really enjoying it. Rox is a food glutton, so he basically will eat anything I put in front of him. (Heck he even wants human food, but haha no that's mine :P)
Check out my cat food reviews in this video: th-cam.com/video/eRtL3GGa4as/w-d-xo.html&t - the list is in the description, 100+ records of all types of food.
Imy cat already has scheduled mealtimes and we already top of her food with freeze-dried but unfortunately the food we feed her is absolute crap I really feel guilty about this. I would like to switch to more meat-based since we already have steps 1 and 2 down should I just start with the little bit of the new food? 😊
Thank you! I could do a video, but until then I have a dedicated page here: www.caticles.com/kidney-care/ with veterinary resources since I am not a doctor (:
I have a question about kibble. The more I read and listen to and watch about cat nutrition the clearer the picture becomes. I already feed my cat 3/4 of her food as frozen raw, but 1/4 is kibble. High grade kibble, but kibble none the less. I use it because my cat is quite demanding of stimulation and the dry food I usually put in a ball or hide so that she can get some action when I haven’t got time to play enough with her in the early day. My reasoning has been that it’s worth it, but is it? Should I stop feeding her dry food at all? She’s a good drinker and most of the treats she get are of the jerky/freeze-dried variety, so the carbs in the kibble is essentially the only excessive carbs she get, but is even that too much?
It's great that the majority of the diet is fresh food. And freeze-dried are definitely very healthy treats. Have you tried using the freeze-dried treats in place of dry food in the ball/treat-release toy/etc.? That might be a better alternative if you can do it. If not, you could upgrade the kibble that you're feeding. There is a link in the description for air-dried food and other kibbles that I've found to be of better quality.
Just found your videos. I am afraid to feed my cat raw foods. Perhaps my fear is unfounded. My cat Callie is fiv+ .Our guess is she is about 11 yrs old. I found her about 2 years ago. She refuses wet food even overnight. Throws up her food if I mix a little wet with her dry food. I am ready to upgrade the food and transition her to better dry increasing wet food slowly.. Do you think Fiv cats can switch to raw or freeze dried foods safely? I appreciate your direction. My vet says Purina. So far she is heathy but needs to lose weight. Thank you so much!
I'd suggest reading this article that discusses FIV cats and raw: catcentric.org/care-and-health/raw-feeding-and-health-compromised-ibd-fiv-etc-cats/. Basically, a properly balanced raw diet can be the best for the immune system because it is the most natural. Free from unnecessary ingredients, fillers, chemical preservatives, etc.
Hello, I had a question. Either freeze dried, wet or raw which option would be best for a car that gets UTI's easily? My cat is currently on a dry vet prescription diet. Thank you.
Hi! I am not a medical doctor, however, I have a page dedicated to urinary care here: www.caticles.com/urinary-care/ that includes veterinary resources.
Hello! I have cat that had the same problem-cats are carnivores and must have wet food a couple times every day for the moisture. Water alone will not work. Their organs must have it to function properly. Try to visualize how you would feel if you could only have water and dried cereal or dry granola 24/7.... That's what it's like for your cat lol. Male cats will more than likely, eventually develop crystals or stones like mine did which can turn into a fatal situation quickly because they causes blockage-trust me, you never, ever want your cat to go through this (female cats will have issues too)- it is imperative they have wet food every single day. Side note on the prescription dry food look up "prescription" dry food online a lot of it is unnecessary wordage to make you think it is the best food for your cat, when it's really not. 😉
The cans are $35 for 11 oz or the freeze-dried is that price? I saw that feline natural also has pouches - maybe those are cheaper than cans because it isn't a tin? With freeze-dried raw you don't use as much food because you would rehydrate it with water so that bag goes a long way.
@@jesscaticles The freeze-dried is 11oz. for $35. So we figured it out & it would end up being really, really expensive as anything other than a topper.
@@lindajardee Yea unfortunately processed food will always be more expensive. Fresh frozen raw is cheaper, but you typically have to buy more of it up front to fill the shipping box. If you can buy frozen raw locally that would be ideal. Steve's real food and Bravo are good brands.
@@jesscaticles my cats seem to love freeze dried raw as is. When I rehydrated it they didn't seem to want to eat it. Will have to try again and see. Is it bad just giving it to them as is without rehydrating it?
@@debbieshomes6984 Yes and no. Not as bad as dry food because the ingredients are better. But cats need moisture from their food so it would be best to rehydrate it. Start with 1 drop and then day 2, 2 drops, day 3, 3 drops, etc. Cats are so picky about change!
I wish I can weigh my 2 feril cats. The two cats are use to coming inside my living room and they let me pet. Took me 5 months to gain their trust but when I pick the cats up it's only for a few seconds. I'm feeding them blue Buffalo dry and one or twice a week tuna or mackerel.
what do you think about the cat food brand Nacho? I am starting the process of transitioning them to a raw diet and that’s what they are eating in the mean time.
my cats eat dry kibble and/or soaked kibble (the biologically appropriate kind) , eggs and wet food and drink water. also eat chicken and fish and whatver is cooked at home but for this its either boiled or raw. is that fine?
Kibble of any kind is not biologically appropriate as I mention in the other video you commented on. Cats require moisture from food. Homemade is certainly the best because you control the ingredients and how it's made. But it has to be done correctly. I have a full guide on homemade cat food here: th-cam.com/video/2uM6smRI3A8/w-d-xo.html&t.
Also would suggest no fish. Fish can be a great supplement for EPA/DHA. But it is not recommended as the sole protein source for a few reasons. Cats often develop an addiction to fish and this causes picky eating.
@@jesscaticles this is probably true. My older cat doesn't eat anything other than tuna wet food from a crap brand. I have managed to change her kibble though to orijen. Wish I could smear a chicken breast with some tuna flavouring.
Whole prey is best but not dead animals you find outside. You'd have no idea how they were killed and if they have parasites etc. Better to buy whole prey from farms, breeding facilities, etc.
Hi! I love your videos! You do such great work. I am just starting on the meal schedule. Unfortunately my rescue came to me addicted to kibble. My question is, during the transition phase, as I wean her off with a tiny amount of new food. What if she rejects the new food. How long should I keep trying to give it to her?
Hi!! thank you so much for joining as a member!! I'm excited to have you and be here with you on this journey. It's normal for cats to reject new food because they are resistant to changes. This is just a natural instinct we have to work with! Stay patient and persistent with it and try not to make a big deal about it. It sounds silly but cats do pick up on the way we feel. Many people have told me right when they were ready to give up, their cat accepted the new food.
@@jesscaticles One last question, my cat eats kibble in the AM (loves it) and wet in the PM (doesn't always love). Should I bother switching her kibble to Ziwi Peak after the feeding schedule month, if she is already eating some wet?
According to the Fancy Feast can, my 10.8 pound cat needs over 4.4 cans or 302 calories or 367 grams or 13.2 oz. per day! I only feed her 3 cans/day and it seems like too much. The vet said 200 calories/day, which is a little less than 3 cans daily. This is confusing!
Every cat and food is individual so there are no magic numbers "feed this amount" and that's that. But interesting that you have to feed so many oz per day. Jericho eats 4.5 oz of raw food daily, and he weighs 9.8 lbs. Processed food will always require more feedings because it is not as bioavailable as fresh food.
@@jesscaticles Thank you for your response! She does not eat it all, which is why it seems like too much. Before I discovered you, I did it backwards. Switched her from bad kibble to bad wet alternating with bad kibble. Then several months of !st and 3rd meal canned (trying every brand, flavor, and texture until we found one brand and texture she liked, varying flavor daily), still feeding slightly better kibble for 2nd meal since I worked long hours, and it lasted longer. Now I am not working, but she is addicted to that kibble meal! I was researching nutrition and wanted her to get better quality food, so for several weeks mixed a half can of better wet food with a half can of lesser quality wet food for each of her 1st and 3rd meals, which she seemed to like, then she suddenly quit eating anything but the kibble. I understand now that I tried to transition too fast. So, I am starting over with the 2 wet and one dry meal plan that worked pretty well although not optimal. I still want to transition her to at least high-quality wet food and healthy treats, following your plan to the letter. My question is, how do I treat the middle kibble meal? Do I transition that to wet first? Or upgrade the first then the third wet meals? Or gradually mix the wet into the kibble, as if it were wet food? She does like a raw topper, so I will continue that. I am getting ahead of myself. I just want to be able to make a concrete plan, so I can write it out and stop trying to change more than one thing at a time. We have a LONG way to go. It takes her sometimes 4 hours to eat her meal, so we are stuck on the first step. She just won't eat 200 calories in a day unless she gets kibble. So, I think I will stop counting her calories, but I am afraid to malnourish her.
Hi thank you again for all your time i have a ? i have a rescue hes about three and very cool cat im not ready for raw but im starting with ZIWI chicken dry today looks like per his weight he gets 2oz a day he is in very good shape how much wet food should i give him a day also aprox. thank you
Wow all of this is a lot. I started watching your videos to try and find a better quality food for my cat. He's only 9 months old, and I adopted him back in September. Since I've had him he's had issues with soft stools and/or the runs. I've tried 3 different foods that are supposedly for sensitive tummies. 🥺 Though now looking at the brands, labeling, and ingredients I can tell they are rubbish. *sigh* He's been to the vet a few times now and we've done a fecal done locally and a more thorough outside lab. No worms or parasites. We've also tried prescription probiotics...they didn't help. 😪 I need to find him a better food to help him not have the runs. It has to be miserable for him. He now needs to lose some weight as well. I'm going to search the Chewy website looking for better options now knowing some labeling things to look for. If anyone has good suggestions that may help I'd really appreciate it. 😺🧡😺🧡

Hi Jess is wellness chicken entree pate good for mild kidney disease I was told it is good. I don’t like Hill’s diet science nor do I like Royal Canin.. please let me know. My cat is 10yrs
I have a page dedicated to kidney care here: www.caticles.com/kidney-care/ - with veterinary resources including Dr. Lisa Pierson's chart comparing cat foods and phosphorus levels and suggestions for food.
Feed them raw. Raw chicken or beef, organic in conjunction with tauren. See Dr Becker's recommendation on raw; they eat raw in the wild. I have several cats and do the best I can. I have now been buying Koha wet cat food.
Check the description for options (: But keep in mind... Dry food is very dehydrating for cats. Think about it like this, would you survive and thrive eating dry cereal only? Every meal of every day for weeks, months, and years. Doctors say we need to eat more fresh food and fewer processed foods, and the same is true for our cats. The average cat eating dry food only would have to drink over 8 ounces of water daily just to stay hydrated. And think about why CKD cats require fluids. More on moisture here: th-cam.com/video/NmpfAzYejsE/w-d-xo.html.
The best part about my cat is he's a skinny fatass and will eat whatever I put in front of him. As long as he's fed STRICTLY at 7am and 7pm he's gucci.
I've included tiki cat in my reviews here: th-cam.com/video/eRtL3GGa4as/w-d-xo.html&t - it's definitely better than most. But there are a few better options. That review list has 100+ records so you can choose a few that work for you.
I’m new here, great video, have you done video if I give my cats a treat if homemade chicken, I just boil it and give it to them as a treat or just a little extra protein
My cat eats everything but I am trying to find a good wet food to transition her to that won’t break my bank. I have so many different fur babies but have no idea about cat health since she’s my first and I’m struggling to find the right fit. My vet didn’t really help me either..
Check out my cat food reviews in this video: th-cam.com/video/eRtL3GGa4as/w-d-xo.html&t - the list is in the description, 100+ records of all types of food. You will have to scroll a bit to get to wet food options. I'm also planning a video for next month featuring budget-friendly wet foods.
I bought a dry food (profine) it has 75% chicken. With rice. They been eating it for a about 2 months I just noticed its texture is very hard and they stopped eating it because of how it's hard I've smelled bad breath from their mouths bought a new dry food (friskies) it has no good ingredients but they love it. But it makes them thirsty I noticed they drink water a lot I tried dipping (profine) in water so it can get soft but they don't like it what do u recommend miss
Wet food! Cats rely on food for moisture. Please use this transition guide and check out my cat food reviews in this video: th-cam.com/video/eRtL3GGa4as/w-d-xo.html&t - the list is in the description to choose a better quality food.
Yes I'm familiar with iams and I've found it to be lower quality. I'm not sure if I already linked to this in your other comments, but I have a review list with over 100 records here: th-cam.com/video/eRtL3GGa4as/w-d-xo.html&t I have a spreadsheet of about 50 more brands not included on the list. I didn't include them yet because they all got less than a 50% rating. But I will continue to add to the list as people ask me about other brands.
@@misfit1395 Definitely! Keep in mind you will need some of the current food to transition to new food. Cats are sensitive to food changes so you will have to wean off gradually. I have a full transition guide here: th-cam.com/video/tTV0FSxDE-w/w-d-xo.html
“All cats are sensitive to food change” ohhhhh I wish! I’m fostering a 16 year old female house cat, she not only demands change, she demands change of manufacturer as well as flavour! One of the things she dislikes is raw, she won’t entertain it!
Most cats that eat processed foods don't recognize raw as food. But I actually suggest varying manufacturers and flavors for a few reasons mentioned in this video and this video here: th-cam.com/video/y1QjaBYLmt0/w-d-xo.html&t
i would be careful with tuna unless you know it's mercury free. a lot of canned tuna does contain trace amount of mercury which can affect cats a lot faster than people.
The three canned fish that I bought to supplement my Maine Coon's diet and as treats are: Bumble Bee Chunk Light Tuna in vegetable oil, Chicken of the Sea Sardines in water, and Kroger Mackrel (I know...). But how do I know about the mercury level of these brands or any brands? Are there any other reasons I should not give him even a little of these canned fish products?
Canned fish products usually contain a lot of salt. And the veggie oil will unbalance the fatty acids in the diet. Fish can be a great supplement for EPA/DHA. But it's likely that the food you're feeding already contains this. And again you don't want to unbalance the food. Cats often develop an addiction to fish and this causes picky eating. Many fish also contain thiaminase which destroys b vitamins.
@@jesscaticles Got it. Last question on this matter. So are you suggesting to not even use these products even for snacks? P.S. There are a lot of cat experts out there, but I think you are the best and smartest:)
Smaller more frequent meals for sure! Also make sure he is eating the proper amount total for the day. He may be scarfing because he's not eating enough (total for the day).
I recently adopted a kitten (2 months old) that was being fed adult meow mix dry food, we tried transitioning him to dried kitten food but he’s preferring the meow mix and it seems that the transition cause him to have some diarrhea Note: We are also feeding him wet food I don’t want to keep feeding him the meow mix but I also want him to continue to eat his regular amount
I'd suggest crushing up the kibble pieces and sprinkling that over the wet food. Then you would follow this plan and gradually decrease the amount of kibble and increase the amount of wet food daily.
I'm worried bec my cat has been shedding fur and I guess it's due to the food quality he's eating but what can I do! He used to eat a better quality food for some reason he hates now 😭
Most cats are picky about food changes. In fact, this is the #1 complaint I get. So you are not alone (: Here is an entire playlist of everything you need to know: th-cam.com/video/tTV0FSxDE-w/w-d-xo.html - The first video is a complete guide on how to switch food, specifically formulated for picky cats. Next is my cat food reviews video which includes 100+ records of all types of food. And the remaining videos cover healthy treats, FAQ, and supporting help.
A raw feeding group i am part of on facebook says that minnows contain an ingredient that destroys thiamine, so they shouldnt be given to cats. Have you heard of this? I've been giving my kitten freeze dried minnows almost everyday since he was 3 months old.
It is actually some fish contain thiaminase which can destroy b vitamins. Apparently smelt (minnows) do contain thiaminase. I feed them daily to Jericho too but I only give 2 which is a very small amount, probably like 1% of his diet.
Since covid, everything is so expensive and hard to come by. With a very limited budget I suppose I have to wait until IRS allow pet parents to claim their pets as dependents or make them get a job.🤑
Great video! Thank you so much 💗 BTW, my cat LOVES to chase treats and demands treat chasing time every night. He even catches them in his mouth lol. If you know how to make an app, it might prove profitable....? 😁
Thank you for your kind words!! That's so funny that he catches his treats in his mouth. Jericho is good at catching his toys in his paws but not mouth! I don't have a software background, but that is a good idea!
@@jesscaticles Loki does paws too. I was quite surprised when he started catching them in his mouth. He's a nut! The rest of the time he jumps and hits them like a tennis player. I'm not sure but you may be able to find a collaborator to make an app. Maybe Fiverr ??

Very overwhelming!!!
This is so overwhelming 😭 I want to feed my cat better but i feel so overwhelmed right now with all this information...but i know i need to take it one step at a time
Yes,take it slow & transition slowly. Stay away from bad foods wet or dry that contain "meat by products". This is very bad for cats.
There are chapters so watch step 1 today and work on it this month. then come back next month and skip to step 2.
I am way overwhelmed too. Just give me good brands please.
I feed my cat am.and 5 pm. Dry in am about one third of a cup and a half a can of friskies wet food. Sometimes a little snack but not often. He is very long--a big kitty.
Did you know seafood is very bad for kitties. There is Mercury in it that causes cancer.
Whoever gives down thumbs on her, is just not listening! 🙄🐾👯♂️ Education is key.
Thank you!!! Education is the best tool we have 😻
Thank you so much, Jess! Thank you! 💕❤💕
You are saint of cats, thank you
Aww thank you!
Glad your baby is doing better with her weight loss! Thank you for watching and commenting (:
THANK YOU, JESS! Thank you for this channel!!! My cats deserve better than Fancy Feast "medleys". It's the only brand they enjoy, though. We tried making slow transitions to healthier food last year, starting with Avoderm (didn't work out too well). They liked Wellness brand a bit more, but 50% of the time they ignore it or begrudgingly take 2 bites. Going to make a new plan for them once again. It's work, but their long-term health is everything to me. Thank you for making feline nutrition easier for us confused cat parents to understand and implement 😍
I'm so happy that you see the work is worth it!
I'm so happy to have stumbled upon your channel. Lots of great information, and I appreciate the way you break it down.
Which isn't bad they took on to it pretty quick because I used a couple of tricks and it worked really well
Amazing, you like raised right? Is it easy
Jericho looks totally bored like he’s heard this before lol
Lol he has 😸
this is so impressive, i'm convinced: jericho will outlive us all! lmfao
Well done!

Wonderful!
They do!
Start with chapter 1 lol
Thank you for all your hard work on cat nutrition. It’s helping out a lot! I have one question. What cat food bowls do you use for Jericho?
Very helpful, thankyou!! ☺️
So happy it's helpful! You're very welcome (:
Wow this video is so helpful
Glad it was helpful!
Aww they are very lucky to have you! All product links are in the description. Let me know how the transition goes (:
Stage by stage, step by step, I needed this, much appreciated Jess.
I kept telling my vet 'it's all muscle', my vet says 'He's fat'.
He wasn't insulted, fortunately, the vet only speaks Japanese, my cat is bilingual.
English and Cat.
English and cat LOL. Glad my video was helpful!
my cat has been leaking poop all over everything in my house for several weeks. she had a cough which we went to the vet for, and they gave her a dewormer but she's still leaking all over everything.
Taking care of cats takes patience because they are sensitive to food changes.
I have 2 senior cats, is all of this still doable for them at this stage of their lives?
This sounds like a full time job. Jess sweetheart, can I hire you to care for my cats? With my busy schedule I'm lucky to eat on time or eat at all let alone feeding my kitties. I really appreciate your info, it is very informative and educational but I need something more less of a hassle to feed my felines. I just want to open a healthy pack and feed my fur babies and move on. Nevertheless, thanks for your input and teaching me what I didn't know. Cheers!
Aww thank you!! I understand it is daunting at first. But the time commitment is a few months then after that you just keep feeding the best!
How do you use an automatic feeder if you’re feeding raw? Do you have to buy freeze dried raw
And I make food for them at home and they have diarrhea. what am I doing wrong? I’m so worried 😢
how do i get the spreadsheet?
Thanks a lot of info. I needed to hear this, for new kitten (7months.) Want to get her off dry to wet and hopefully raw. :)
Glad it was helpful! Just take it one step at a time (:
I don't keep a journal for me let alone my cat!
Thank you! Squigs (aka Princess Squiggles Louise aka Little Miss) and Tigs (aka Tigger aka Satan) thank you, also.
Awww thank you! Love the nicknames lol Jericho has like 10 hahah
Even with her current food she sometimes has a meal she barely touches)
@@jesscaticles thank you!

Imy cat already has scheduled mealtimes and we already top of her food with freeze-dried but unfortunately the food we feed her is absolute crap I really feel guilty about this. I would like to switch to more meat-based since we already have steps 1 and 2 down should I just start with the little bit of the new food? 😊
Can you recommend a scale for a cat that should weigh around 13 pounds? Thanks.

My cat is only 2 but overweight and occasionally has trouble with constipation. Could you please recommend a good food choice for him?

Free from unnecessary ingredients, fillers, chemical preservatives, etc.

lams urinarydry food any good?
I thought of using the Feline Natural freeze dried cat food as a small bit of topper over the canned cuz it is super expensive at $35 for 11oz.
Most cats don't like being picked up. I worked with ~400 and only one actually wanted me to pick her up (:
@@jesscaticles You worked with 400 cats?
what do you think about the cat food brand Nacho? I am starting the process of transitioning them to a raw diet and that’s what they are eating in the mean time.
Made by nacho? I've included that in my review list here: th-cam.com/video/eRtL3GGa4as/w-d-xo.html&t - list in description.
My cat wouldn't eat Nacho. Or Weruva. Or any of the high dollar wet food. 😭
can cats have raw rabbit?
my cats eat dry kibble and/or soaked kibble (the biologically appropriate kind) , eggs and wet food and drink water. also eat chicken and fish and whatver is cooked at home but for this its either boiled or raw. is that fine?
I have a question, Can you just grab a dead rabbit or bird and feed or cat?
Whole prey is best but not dead animals you find outside. You'd have no idea how they were killed and if they have parasites etc. Better to buy whole prey from farms, breeding facilities, etc.
I have a 3 month old kitty. In your opinion what food is best for her?

Great video :) Have you ever heard of the brand Venandi Animals? What are your thoughts on its products?
I looked quickly on amazon and looks pretty good!
@@jesscaticles That's good to hear. Phew! :)
@@jesscaticles Thank you for getting back to me, it means a lot.
Hi thank you again for all your time i have a ? i have a rescue hes about three and very cool cat im not ready for raw but im starting with ZIWI chicken dry today looks like per his weight he gets 2oz a day he is in very good shape how much wet food should i give him a day also aprox. thank you
Every cat is different so you'll have to use his weight, body condition score, and the cat food label. I discuss this in the video (:
I need to find him a better food to help him not have the runs. It has to be miserable for him. He now needs to lose some weight as well. I'm going to search the Chewy website looking for better options now knowing some labeling things to look for. If anyone has good suggestions that may help I'd really appreciate it. 😺🧡😺🧡

Any dry food products for cats that are good enough?
Check the description for options (:
But keep in mind...
Could I feed my 6 month old kitten dry and wet food daily (not mixed together)?

“All cats are sensitive to food change” ohhhhh I wish! I’m fostering a 16 year old female house cat, she not only demands change, she demands change of manufacturer as well as flavour! One of the things she dislikes is raw, she won’t entertain it!
Most cats that eat processed foods don't recognize raw as food. But I actually suggest varying manufacturers and flavors for a few reasons mentioned in this video and this video here: th-cam.com/video/y1QjaBYLmt0/w-d-xo.html&t
can i mix canned tuna, mackerel, sardines into my cat's food routine?
i would be careful with tuna unless you know it's mercury free. a lot of canned tuna does contain trace amount of mercury which can affect cats a lot faster than people.
Our cat eats too fast to the point where he throws up if I don’t give him really small amounts of food. So you have any suggestions for this?
Smaller more frequent meals for sure! Also make sure he is eating the proper amount total for the day. He may be scarfing because he's not eating enough (total for the day).
I recently adopted a kitten (2 months old) that was being fed adult meow mix dry food, we tried transitioning him to dried kitten food but he’s preferring the meow mix and it seems that the transition cause him to have some diarrhea
Note: We are also feeding him wet food
I don’t want to keep feeding him the meow mix but I also want him to continue to eat his regular amount
I'd suggest crushing up the kibble pieces and sprinkling that over the wet food. Then you would follow this plan and gradually decrease the amount of kibble and increase the amount of wet food daily.
What if your cat gets struvite crystals and the vet says I have to feed only this one type of food (and that brand is on your naughty list!)?
