FLASH FLOOD IN CATEEL - Beach Home Barangay Store Damaged (BecomingFilipino)

  • THERE WAS A FLASH FLOOD IN CATEEL...
It had been raining all day, and suddenly we got a call from Auntie Cecil... her Barangay store was flooding! Luckily everyone was okay, but it was sad seeing some homes in the Barangay and stores get damaged. After determining everyone was okay, I decided to take some footages and photos. Turns out it was good, as the Barangay and DPWH needed them...
And the guys started calling me "Bayan Patroller".
This is just another video of our lives here in Cateel, Davao Oriental, Mindanao. We love our Barangay, and appreciate everything that surrounds our beach home here.
    Power On!

NOTICE - To anyone building a structure in the future. This is my advice (30 years in construction/demolition business here in the US). ALWAYS build your structure/home higher than the road IF ALL POSSIBLE, and here's why. Civil engineers working for the government HAVE to build roads above flood plain, this is by design. Gov spends millions surveying/building roads to make sure all are above flood plain during heavy rain (close flooded roads = unproductive civilians = gov losing tax revenue, since you are taxes on how much money you make/income). The gov has already spent a lot of money and time to do the research for you. Take advantage of that information by making sure to build the lowest part of your property higher than the road. Assuming the road is surveyed and built property by your gov. I recommend a MINIMUM of 1 inch for every 10 feet (measuring start from center of the public road). So, if the closest part of your house is 100 ft away from the center of the road, then the MINIMUM height should be 10 inches higher in elevation. 1 inch for every 10 ft is a bench mark of recommended fall for proper drainage of water on hard semi smooth surfaces, i.e., concrete/asphalt. Dirt and grass would require more fall. I hope this advice can help someone avoid a flooding inside their structure in the future.

I think you need to plan for a more slope protection along the shore. Ask you engineer how the gabion works. I am afraid waves will eventually reach your houses. Just suggesting.

The jet stream has moved south since 2020. We in Luzon are getting little if any impacts from the typhoons where usually Dingalan (Aurora) was the eye of the target. Our prayers are with those in Visayas and Mindonao.

Guys! As I can remember from my childhood “TAHOP” is the by product of rice, when milling the whole dried rice grain, the tough outer layer which is called the husk or hull is separated from the starchy grain or the endosperm (the part we eat). Between the husk/hull and the endosperm is the light layer that is the bran/germ where you have the option of removing them through further milling that will just leave you with the white rice grain as the finer product. Those bran/germ provides healthier nutrients and in some milling they are kept intact as healthy alternative. The by product has so many uses as fertilizer, fuels, etc, even great for growing squash & similar vine vegetables on the ground. Just cover your ground with “tahop”. sprinkle some squash seeds then Whola! the next thing you’ll see are plenty of squash growing in your yard, no need to take care. Try it Kyle, you will be eating yellow squash everyday, It’s your favorite, right? 🙂🙂🙂

I tried to get some money to you to do this before but it didn't work out. I'm super happy you did it! It will make you smile when you see it. Cheers!

Now you know why it’s not a good investment to build a home along the shorelines especially in the Philippines. It’s spectacular on a good day but hell during the typhoon season. Usually, here in the states it’s actually the secondary or tertiary home but there, it’s mostly their ONLY home. I admire their resilience.
