Make one of the slits at the homeowner’s eye height so he/she can see out the fence with out having to stand on tippy toes or have to crouch down.

33:14 - For my aesthetic preference: If doubling up some boards, I would have done the doubled up boards with no spacer near the bottom then a spacer between every board near the top. I’d prefer the aesthetic of having the extra thickness near the bottom and a “lighter” look at the top. Even better would have been to rip the bottom board lengthwise so that then it was a space between every board with only the bottom board being narrower. Either way, those are aesthetic preferences.
Your issue with the height of the top board being too tall was because the system is designed that you do not need a spacer below your first board. It is built in to the columns so that it keeps the bottom board elevated already. But overall, good looking system and easy install!!
That is exactly what I was thinking as the gap on bottom looked to big compared to all the rest.

I like the way it was done. Gap on the bottom for us who deal with snow. Air flow more on the lower area and double boards to kind of cover the faces more of the people standing on the deck for noise reduction and privacy. I like it. You are good at this.
OMG! I’ve been wanting to do a fence like the Hoft fence, and Lowes is close to my house! I need to replace an old pine panel/picket fence and this will look amazing. I hope Hoft can comp you for the promoting it!
After watching this video I got an Ad from that company and saw that they sell hanging accessories like shelves and planter boxes that you can install like it's a peg board. That's pretty neat. Looks great!
I used this system last year building my first fence and I loved it! Can attest that it survived the winter in good shape too. I think it's worth every extra penny to save time and get consistent results especially if you don't have advanced skills.

OMG. This was perfect. Just ordered these parts and got my fence around my propane tank up in less than 2 hours. Got friends with power tools to drill holes into rock surround. Thanks SO much for the video.

amazing work like always. In this situation, I would measure and ripe the board so it lines up, and place that ripped board at the bottom, so everything would line up at the top. But what you did works fine. Nice job.

Solution for your hight issue: Remove the top board. Measure the left over space. A) Just cut the left over piece to this dimension and use it as "extraordinary piece" B) if you dont want ot to be asymmetrical, cut two pieces that total with spacer equal to the gap size. Put one of the extraordinary piece to the bottom and the other to the top. You may even paint black to give a frame-ish look 😊

I think the gap is preference based on how much wind exposure you get and how much privacy is warranted. Me, I'd go spacer, 2 boards, spacer, 2 boards to make it work out in your favor.
After watchin this several times I can say with absolute confidence that this is not, in fact, a hair styling video.

I think double at the bottom and single at top would look better. gives a more large on bottom to small on top aesthetic that most buildings go with. Such as roofs being pointed, top finish pieces going big to small ect. When on the deck, will probably be sitting most of the time relaxing. more privacy coverage this way too. Either way it came out pretty nice and way too easy lol. Good job on finished product.

I think I would have ripped the top board to the right height for the cap, then take it apart and use it as the bottom starter board. Rip all of the bottom boards the same. Then you’ll have even spaces on all boards.
Yup. Came here to suggest that too. Jeff's solution is pretty elegant but more noticeable. More than one way to skin a cat!

Looks fantastic. I am just wondering, should you stain the wood before you put the privacy fence together or can you stain the wood after? Which would be best to do? I think I can do this one on my own, looks nice and easy, I love it!
i work for a builder. we probably would have done the same thing. i like the pattern you created.
I didn't see the earlier videos. What are the base plates drilled into? I can imagine that the outer screws go into the the joists, but do the inner screws just go into the decking?
Ive beeen here since sub 20k subs. your backing screw method to not split the wood is something im taking to the grave.
On the ends that are not attached to the wall or a corner what keeps them sturdy. i live in a higher wind area with a lot of snow fall and want to keep as much integrity as possible. also curious if you have a suggestion on how to add a gate or opening.
Now thats a smart system. Fast and neat and the spacers with a nail on it keeping it together. Looks great.
And about the remembering of measurements........i know 😉 Write it down!
The next day you see youre measurment ont the wood and then you think........what side was it?
About the posts and staining, good video by the way. But since this is all new construction, wouldn’t it be easier/better to just stain everything first and then put up the posts and build the wall?
This is my next project, but on top of concrete for a much longer distance. How did your boards settle after time on 5ft centers for posts? Did they warp or bow out of alignment. I'm going with 6ft centers on posts and was wondering if I need a vertical board in the middle to keep the boards from warping or bowing. I wish I could go 8ft on centers but the product insists on 6ft.

Can those posts on bolts really handle wind sheer with a nearly solid privacy fence on them? I couldn't find a wind rating in the description.
Which type of wood was used for the horizontal fence planks?

yeah i am not liking the NO privacy. This wouldn't be a place I would live..and I like a yard. The deck to me is too tall and big.
@@crazydoglady5 Same for me about the privacy. Not going to live in a place where the neighbours are looking down into my yard.
@@lou196t also a consideration is that if you have a raised deck built, not staring at your neighbor from above is also helpful for their privacy/awkwardness.
if i substituted the aluminuim post for wooden posts what would be the best way to fasten them to the floor/garden?
In the video, you talk about the structural screws to hold in the aluminum pillars. You were going to show the package because you sent your son off to get more. Double space under the bottom board first so you have room to shovel the snow out!
I like that fence system. Looks very nice. If I counted correctly you have 3 double stacks and 6 single stacks per section. I would have gone 3 singles on bottom, 3 double stack in the middle, and 3 singles on the top for better privacy. From the angle of the neighbor's yard, they'll be seeing only ankles and tops of heads. Just my opinion.
My OCD says to put the double boards on the bottom, and then have the evenly spaced ones on the top. Just a balance thing...the appearance that the bottom is heavier than the top.
great job Jeff.. Although the way you did the top.. id' have changed.. you put 3 singles on bottom and 3 doubles on top. looks nice. but I THINK.. I would have gone with double on bottom , on top and in the middle i'd have done a double.. the rest inbetween i'd have done the singles.. ( IF it works )..
ok, because i'm cheap.. TELL me.. wouldn't it be cheaper to have bought 2x4's and used a router to cut a 5/8" hole down the middle to slide the boards into?? cuz that's what i'm thinking of doing? cheaper than buying the metal 2x4's.. I guess I could paint them powder black when done? JUST A THOUGHT?
What ‘s kind a long bit drill you used ? I saw you don’t need to drill a hole before you shot a nail inside the wood .
I used a track saw for closing in my raised deck...it was a breeze
Do they make that screen system in different heights? I only need it to be 3’ tall
Would this be considered a code legal guardrail system for an upper level deck?
Did you put a block under the floor to bolt these posts to?
Ive installed these before and for your fitment issue we used to rip the first board to make everything line up at the top.

Trim the bottom board, so that every board at eye height it the same, and use spacers for every board.
The double board looks better. You should of done all double boards and spaced out the bottom bord a little higher to compensate for the lost spacer distance. Keep up the good videos!
What type of wood panels are those ?
Knowing that you had to double stack some, I think i would've been better to double stack then single stack on that privacy fence, in order to gain some "consistency" as you said. looks like you might have been able to double stack once at the bottom, once at the top, and once in the middle, providing a single stripe around the middle. 2 cents from someone who's opinion doesn't matter. Great video!
Personally I would have kept single boards all the way to the top and just cut the final board abit slimmer.
That, or do double boards at the bottom, then single in the middle and double on top.

You have 2 story houses close and facing your deck. Privacy?
Can we use this system as a substitute for deck railings in Ontario? For decks higher than 2ft. Ive found conflicting information on horizontal railing. Any info you could share would be greatly appreciated! Would love to use the 44inch deck rail system hoft offers for my railing but dont want the city to have an issue with it. Thanks!
That's a really good question. Perhaps if the posts are close enough then the boards would be rigid. It's odd as I've seen hoft promo photos showing elevated decks but there is a warning that these can't be used as railings above 24". I've emailed them and waiting to hear back

i got this exact product around my land and your board will sink in those spacer a bit more than what you put them. With all the spacers and board dry i have about 1" from the last board to the very top of the cap. Youll see what i mean when you feel like your board are not lining up to the next. Its a good product and system but has flaws. Overall looks better than a normal fence but the price is higher at 150$ a post.
I installed one of these and find the wind hits it pretty hard/creaks. Looking to install a new deck board below but worry this might persist. Anyone run into this issue?
Someone mentioned no need for spacers on the bottom. Do a dry run, lay the boards on the ground with spacers and measure the height, adjust as needed.
I don’t like the double boards. I would have made 1 thinner board in the bottom, and make the spacing consistent.

for me, I really like privacy so I would have left out the spacers and went all the way to the top (board on board)..even if i had to rip one and put it at the bottom or top so it isnt as noticeable..

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I am here in Texas and even though we do have some winds at times..we have board on board with NO gaps and do just fine. So unless it is blowing 45+ mph alot, I see no need to leave gaps.
What were the size anchors that you used? I don't believe you referenced them again after having your co worker running to get more.
How could you use this system on bare ground

That all depends on if you have a thick enough frame under the bords do all 5 screws are in the frame and not in the deck boards. Cheers. Been 8 months now and more than 1 party. So far so good

Wow this is that easy, no wonder everyone"s got it and its the trend! Just put the posts in and LITERALLY drop it in like a connect 4 board.
different sized spacers, boom next million dollar idea..
or just cut a little off the top with a spacer between each board as normal..., or 2 then spacer, 2 spacer...
I think I woulda ripped the excess off one, board and put it at the bottom. From 5’ish off the ground I think it would be barely noticeable, if at all. But I also live out in the middle of the woods, so I don’t worry about privacy…..cell signal is an issue, but privacy is not! 😂😂

I used the Home Depot version that I screwed the channels into a wooden post then added the deck boards. I was amazed at just how much those boards shrank. Did the gaps get even larger on these?
that is why you apply the stain. it seals the wood and helps prevent shrinkage. also good to let the wood dry out before install.
