How about we judge it on its own merits and not call it a Pokemon rip-off? That's coming from a die hard Pokemon fan.
I consider it a Pokémon inspired game and I am a hardcore Pokémon fan.

After playing the demo, I don't see why people are comparing this so much to Pokemon.The Battle system is extremely different, and Yo-kais joining you is random. There just isn't enough in common with Pokemon to call it a "rip-off".

People only compare the two because the franchise became a huge hit in Japan and has multiple forms of merchandise and media exactly like how Pokemon started. Besides the making friends with monsters bit, the games are way different and have their own merits and faults.

For me I'm just interested in this because it's made by Level 5 who've made some of my favourite games before.

desdar100 I can understand i tho, The Anime will be aired in Europe too so that needs to be translated and the game needs to be tranlated in the main European languages too!(Maybe even the secondary European Languages Dutch,Russian and Portuguese) (And that takes time :( )

Got into the series when I was 10, and here I am now, having played 1-4, watched the anime, read the manga, watched stuff like Shadowside, Forever Friends, all the movies except Y, and have a lot of Japanese toys.

I find it funny how some Pokemon fanboys are complaining how this is a ripoff, yet they don't complain about the hundreds of blatant Pokemon ripoff games on iOS with micro-transactions
+rrivera992011 What is funny is how I read multiple reviews on those types of ripoff games, and only a few them complain how they are ripoffs of Pokemon, and rightfully so. It is like why I would waste my time on wannabes ripoffs with forgettable designs and micro-transactions when I could get the official games that have higher qualities than the ripoffs wished they could emulate? Speaking of mobile games, Pokemon fanboys might as well complain how Puzzles & Dragons ripoff Pokemon since it is an RPG where you get elemental monsters to battle other monsters and hopefully get them even though it plays nothing like Pokemon.

I am a huge Pokemon fan, and just got into watching the Yokai watch anime, and I like it. It resembles Pokemon in a lot of ways, but is indeed very different. I am considering buying the first Yokai Watch game. ^_^

For people who think Yokai Watch and Pokemon are similar: You are DEAD WRONG.
I won't lie, as a Pokemon fan myself, I thought the same thing. I noticed how popular the anime and game were getting, however, and decided to watch one episode of the anime.
It was AMAZING.
I immediately became a fan, and I started liking it way more then Pokemon. And to this day, I have all the Yokai Watch mangas. The thing with Pokemon is that you CATCH them, but with Yokai Watch, you befriend the Yokai.
Secondly, Yokai Watch is a MUCH harder game then Pokemon. Also, you have more things to do, and you can collect bugs as well as Yokai.
Thirdly, the Yokai can only be seen by the protagonist. No other people can see them, since they are spirits of dead or forgotten things.
Tell me, how is Yokai Watch similar to Pokemon? "Oh, it's got monsters?"
I used to be one of those people, and I regret it so much. I hope Yokai Watch fans will forgive me. But do not worry, I am one of you guys now.

Another Pokémon lover here, I wasn't part of the "ripoff" Yo Kai bandwagon but I never motivated myself to get into the games/anime outside the demo. But man recently I got my hands on the first game and Fleshy Souls, and I'm having so much fun, I wished I never slept on the franchise but now I'm a true believer
You'll never get these kind of thrills and experience new things if you only stick to one monster game. ;) Besides it's by Level 5 who made Professor Layton and helped develop Dragon Quest IX for the DS.

"I'm not a ghost I'm a yo kai".....yokai means ghosts or monsters from Japanese mythology. :-| (I understand nintendo is trying to avoid controversy with religious folks but the Internet is around and people will find out anyway so why change it?)
And it's the same story with the dub of the anime it's like the digimon dub, too changed for it's own good. despite the good voice acting it changing the names of characters, and locations to appeal an "American" audience does more harm than good sometimes
+Robert Aguilar Yo-kai are spirit-like moreso than ghosts, even if the game is more similar to ghostbuster.
The issue I think is that yo-kai are not just ghosts. They're a bunch of things (spirits, aliens, mythology, etc), so 'yo-kai is a yo-kai' is said to keep things simple.
Maybe you're right about that, im just kind of weirded out by the change Nintendo made :/

+felixdaniels37 Yay! Thank you for mentioning Noby! He's my favorite anime character, and Doraemon is my favorite anime. Also, I think Johnny Yong Bosch's Noby voice is very iconic now. I mean, even though Doraemon is a new anime, Noby's voice has become recognizable. It's so recognizable and so iconic that, when people hear that voice, they instantly think of Noby. That's pretty awesome, in my opinion. Especially since Doraemon has only has 2 seasons so far. :)

People are getting really miffed by a video game they haven't played yet?

I think the main reason why people are so sharp-tongued about this is because the big companies compare it to pokemon, which long-time pokemon fans seem to hate. Just to be clear, the company doesn't claim to be the next pokemon. It's just super popular over at Japan and people on the west gaming industry seem to think the western crowd might react the same way as them. But this is a monster collection RPG in its own right and doesn't need to be judged unless you've tried playing the real thing.
People think Yo Kai Watch is copying Pokemon? I thought beating up and enslaving wild animals was an entire genre, lol

But seriously, I love Johnny Yong Bosch. And from what I've seen of the Yokai Warch anime, Johnny is adapting his "young boy voice" very well. The pitch of Noby and Nate's voice may be similar. But I've noticed that Johnny has adapted his Nate voice, and he made it sound slightly different from his Noby voice. On top of that, these 2 characters have very different personalities, so that helps separate them as well. :)

Y’all it’s very different from Pokémon. A rip of would probably be cheaply made with little to no story and feature similar characters with the same aspect. Yokai watch isn’t a rip of. It has different characters that aren’t similar to the main Pokémon characters, the aspect where you befriend yokai and get their metal is very different from Pokémon’s system so don’t just assume it’s a ripoff because it’s similar. That’s like saying Luka is a rip off of the little mermaid because it’s about a humanoid sea creature going to the surface

+TheFabulousRBK Lots of its charm comes from all the personalities all the characters have, which Level 5 i always great at. All their monsters are always very distinct, and there are apparently some difficult battles that do require a good timing on those super moves.

Actually this game reminds me a lot to ni no kuni, which was also about training creatures and using them in battle. Both were made by level five, but my god the creatures look so similar, they could totally swap the cast of creatures in both games and I wouldn't notice. I'm not sure if that's a good thing tho...

Technically it was three versions and that was for the sequel, Youkai Watch 2. If the sequels come over, it might be kept the same

I don't know why Pokemon fans are getting worried. Personally, I'm a huge fan of Pokemon. And I think I'll enjoy this game just as much as I enjoy Pokemon. (However, if people are worried about the popularity of Yokai Watch, it's probably because the two fandoms are similar. LOL).
Having said that, I know I'm gonna love Yokai Watch. I've played the demo, and the game is fantastic. The Yokai are cute, and the game is really fun to play. ^_^
