    I'm an Asian Australian in Melbourne and this video is so far from the truth and i'm not kidding.
    1. The make-up of Asian communities in Australia are NOT just mainly Chinese/Vietnamese/Filipinos/Indians. There are also many Korean communities, Cambodians, Malaysians etc. They're not just sprinkled every where.
    2. Australia is largely multi-racial and Asians are NOT the only minority (Seriously why would you even say something like this?). We had European migrants, Middle-eastern, Pacific Islanders and North Africans.
    3. Japanese/Mandarin are only one of the LOTE that primary and secondary schools have the option to learn. They also learn Italian, Indonesian etc.
    4. The video of racist white woman on the Sydney trains went viral because it was such rare and isolated incident. She was also publicly condemned for her behaviour. Nobody supported or encouraged her - the full length video showed the people on the train all criticizing her the behaviour. There are incidents or racism in Australia, but not as many as America or Canada etc. People here do understand what racism is!
    Carmen.. i can't really distinguish the Aussie accent. Where have you been living?

      I've lived here all my life, my whole family are racist and don't even know it, even though most of their jokes are racist oriented, it stems from the home environment and then spreads. I had a teacher in Queensland make an example of me because my skin was too white, stood me up and said this kid is cancer prone, i was called snow white for the remainder of my high school years, the place is boganville central.

    • @zombiekiller117
      @zombiekiller117 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      BillyBowlster You can never be 'too White'.
      Unfortunately Anti-Whites have even spread into education system. I'm sorry for your experience but Anti-Whites do that sort of thing.

    • @BillyBowlster
      @BillyBowlster 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      how can you be ant-white when you're white yourself? You're racist against your own skin? They barely had a tan yet used me as a prop for cancer, the whole state is full of dumbs dumbs, it's why you guys vote in the dumbest idiots into power, you guys voted in a billionaire mining magnate to dictate your lives it's hilarious.

      BillyBowlster Most Anti-Whites are White, it's called self-hatred and treason.
      They claim to be 'anti-racist' but really they're just Anti-White.
      'Anti-racist' is a codeword for Anti-White

    • @BillyBowlster

    As an "Asian-Australian" this view on us is pretty wrong. There's not as many racists as you'll think. No way, do kids get taught japanese or chinese, but more likely indonesian or german. No one really barbeques prawns, mainly chicken, lamb, beef, sausages etc. And there's defintely not 90% "white" Australians. They're plenty of other ethnicities living around Australia who happily integrate into the culture.
    Great video nonetheless, love u long time

    • @dadadacrazy
      @dadadacrazy 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Viet-Aussie right here - back in 07 when K-Rudd came into power, there was a strong push for Asian languages and culture to be taught in schools - I certainly spent 2 years learning Japanese (in Yr 7/8). I guess in comparison to America, we're much more aware of Asian culture.
      And yeah, 90% is a bit of stretch, but Australia is at the end of the day, a predominantly white nation. I live in the South-West region of Sydney, which has HEAPS of Asians, Middle-Easterns, etc - but you go to South Sydney and up the North half of Sydney and the mix is a lot more skewed towards European.

      I don't think you can take anything that lady says as true. She was lying about her name when she spoke to the police and a number of another things. Basically she was crazy and ignorant. Unfortunately every nation has its racists. Even this video show its ignorance and is pretty racist. 03:07 No black people in Australia. They totally ignore the indigenous Australians. Is it because they don't think they are human? so they are not worth rating? They also say Asians are the only minority in Australia. It's bullshit facts to play to their audience. No one is perfect so why point the finger? There is no nation on earth that doesn't struggle with raciscm.

    • @raeparks81rp
      @raeparks81rp 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      To be fair the most racism I've ever encountered here in Australia has been against Asians, a friend and I were the only 2 Asians in our year at high school, and I'm only part Chinese (Polynesian and white are my ethnic majority). Asian Studies turned into a massive debate between us and the others in class about whether Asians were nothing but drug smugglers, and that was the least I encountered.
      Let's not forget the One Nation Party or the Whites Only Policy Australia had in the 50s, that some still want back, or Abbott and his party of assholes.

    Born and raised in Australia, Carmen's views are a little skewed...that video went viral here and it happens very rarely, it's usually from drunks, or people who are not mentally stable, which really can happen in any multi cultural country. But for the most part, Australia isn't at all racist, never experienced any sort of this ever. Even if it did happen, you would get so much support and defence from the other Australians around you!

    Australia is 90% white? Where the fuck are all the white people? Where i live it's majority Asian. This women and these guys have no idea about Australia, it's actually cringe worthy watching this. I grew up as the Minority in a predominantly Asian area (South East suburbs of Melbourne) and i have never experienced nor have i been in the presence of any legitimate racism towards me or any of my foreign and native looking friends. Either this racism stuff is all a load of horse shit or happens in other areas.

    • @NickKhoo
      @NickKhoo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yeah I agree. You might get slashes of racism out in country towns but even then it would have to be a place where there haven't seen any other nationalities before. I think generally racism in Australia is lot less than it used to be and I also live in an area where it's predominantly asian (about half Korean and the other half chinese). but yeah I think the above doesn't exactly explain what it's like to be asian in Australia cause I swear I see more black heads than blondes ;)

    I think carmen thinks this way cause she lived in bogansville aka Queensland. If she moved to sydney or melbourne she'd find the CBD is basically 90% asian. I think shanghai feels less asian than melbourne. Also there are heaps of singaporeans and malaysians here. Increasingly more koreans as well.
    But yeah white australians can be racist, but so are the greeks, italians, lebanese, etc. Racial tensions are deep seated here. Let's not even start with how the aborigines were treated and still are being treated today. But to be fair australia is a country in its infancy compared with the states.
    haha i think the biggest difference is that in australia we call "flip flops" thongs.. like what even is a flip flop. It's a thong. And we wear it everywhere - school, work, the dance floor...

    In Australia we have a somewhat interesting culture... I think the reason why people see Australians as somewhat racist is because we're really, really honest about what we think. And, truth be told, there's a bit of a struggle going on between those who want to keep Australia, well, super Australian and closer to the stereotype, and those who want a super multicultural Australia. I'm actually part of the latter, and younger people actually do tend to be more open to multiculturalism, but it also has to do with how you're raised, and where you're raised and stuff...
    Also, there are consequences to really blatant and hurtful racism (or any other kind of discrimination). The woman in the video got a fine or community service or something. It's not super severe, but there is a punishment. Plus, most Australian's look down on it... If you don't want your reputation ruined, it's better to keep it hidden. But we value honesty, so usually it's not particularly well hidden.

    • @k7374-y4n

    • @Skystarry75
      @Skystarry75 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      k737474882 Yeah, I know... I'm not, in almost every way, but I've even identified minor accounts of racism in my family. Like I said, the younger generations, who have always lived in a global world, are less racist than their parents. That's true in all western countries, I think. Truth is, racism is a really difficult thing to eliminate entirely.
      BTW, I was born and raised in Australia, by Australian parent. I've seen and heard my parents being somewhat racist. Heck, it's hard not to know of the Cronulla riots, or the racist remarks people seem willing to say in public. That stuff get's on our news.
      The majority of people in almost any country are not racist. It's just a minority that are, and, in Australia, that minority just happens to be very vocal and outspoken!

      @Oldfart2225 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Skystarry75 A bit ageist of you there. I'm in my 60s and hear far more racist comments from young people than my own generation. Lived in Cabramatta for decades, and barely notice if someone is asian. An American friend asked me who was the 'most typically aussie' on TH-cam, and my immediate answer was Natalie Tran (communitychannel). Most Aussies have some 'ethnicity'. I don't think asians are the major target for racism either; middle eastern people tend to win that prize. Reverse racism also exists. My nephew speaks a couple of asian languages and has picked up shopkeepers for making comments in their own language (usually about charging people more because they're of European background).

    • @Skystarry75
      @Skystarry75 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oldfart2225 It's also partly where you're raised. I'm a Queenslander, and I've got to admit, some of the areas where there are less asians, particularly asian tourists, there tends to be more racism against asians. I mean, on the Gold Coast or in the center of Sydney you would probably assume that any asians are tourists and treat them accordingly, which tends to be kindly. In areas where there's not as much of a tourism industry, they probably cop more flack. And I do know that some young people can be annoyingly ignorant. I've had to be surrounded by people my own age for the majority of my life.
      Also, reverse racism is why it's good to learn second languages!

      You should really check out Melbourne's south-east suburbs then!
      Seriously, there were more first and second generation Australian's in my primary school, than anyone with Anglo heritage, and there was no "majority" ethnicity.
      One of our main forms of entertainment was learning how to swear in different languages from whichever kids had joined us from the local language center that year.
      Almost all my friends were first and second generation Australians, and I grew up not only with them, but with their families...and as I got older I learnt about the true hardship many had endured before coming to our nation, and how lucky we were to be in a country that was free from war, genocide, extreme poverty...all the things my friend's parents had escaped from.
      I feel so fortunate to live where I do...and to be around people of such diverse cultural backgrounds. My life has been enriched by knowing them, and so has our community.
      Perhaps this isn't the case everywhere in Australia, but even in our "low socioeconomic" area, we've proven that workable multiculturalism isn't a myth...it's a reality that can be created by a community that cares about those who have CHOSEN to come here...to work hard for the betterment of our nation, even while retaining their own cultural identity.
      We might be considered a "crappy" area by people who don't live here...but our local council has worked hard to make sure everyone feels included, and it's made the world of difference.
      ...and believe me, nobody appreciates this nation more than those who've gone through hell and back to get here.
      We should be thanking every single new Australian for reminding us how lucky we truly are.

    as a middle-class sydneysider, i can vouch for the fact that australia is disgustingly racist. i've had former friends say shit like 'lol i dont want to go to bali because i want to go to a white people country' and 'black people are dirty and scare me' (lol lets take a guess as to why they're former friends) as well as the same people making fun of asian features, predominantly their eyes. and don't get me started on their casual use of the n-word and a multitude of other racial slurs. then they turn around and proclaim to not be racist whilst being friends with skinheads.
    look at our politicians as well. recently at the g20 summit our prime minister said that before colonialism australia was 'nothing but bush'. lol okay lets eradicate the 95% extinction of our indigenous tribes to feed a privileged white dude's conscience.
    it's everyday offhanded comments. another politician years ago claimed the country was 'swamped by asians' (lol they make up 5% of the population calm down).
    and don't get me started on the treatment of asylum seekers.
    my country, as beautiful as it is in some aspects (healthcare, education, etc. while we still have it anyway), is downright disgusting in the ones above.

      Don't even call Tony Abbott our Prime Minister. He in no way represents an Australian person...or a human person, for that matter. Humans have more basic intellect.
      To have friends like that I think you're mixing with the wrong people. Maybe it's the area, or the 'class', but I don't think anyone in my near proximity would even think that kind of thing. Regional-Metro Victoria... I won't describe myself as a class. This isn't medieval England.

      anglophone countries in general tend to have blatant racist undertones. The only exception is Canada honestly, and I find it so because they're perhaps the most liberal out of all the anglophone countries and blatantly emphasise political correct, whereas in the states and Britain it's more subtle to do so (or rather, optional with blatant social consequences)

    Racism is generational in Australia, when it exists, and I would strongly disagree that Americans are less racist than Australians: and I have spent 25 years in each country. That obnoxious older woman on the train is old enough to remember Japan invading Asia, and even bombing Australia, and the US and Australia fighting in the Vietnamese civil/colonial war. Also I think big city Melbourne, in the south with over four and a half million people, is less racist than the north - that "Australian" grew up in the north - the US equivalent of growing up in the south i.e. she is "provincial."
    And its interesting Asians making a video about racism: Asian countries like China and Japan are hugely racist. just more polite about it: and they make immigration practically impossible ie foreigners of any kind can't get citizenship.

    Queensland is definitely more racist, and if Carmen's experiences of Australia are just from Queensland then her view makes sense. It would be like taking a snapshot of the more racist states/areas of US and damning all of the US. Melbourne and Sydney are very open in regards to race. In my travels I have not noticed much difference in racist attitudes amongst Western Countries.
    Something that is accurate though is that Australian's are far more blunt than Americans. Americans hide their thoughts, and beliefs behind a wall of political correctness (which does not mean they are not racist). Australians say what's on their mind and have a darker more sarcastic sense of humour which makes it appear that they are more racist. The key thing, I find, is that because Australians say things openly, they don't hold onto racist ideas strongly, while Americans hide and harbour their feelings and tightly hold on to their racist beliefs.

      I also like to celebrate the congregations of cultures and ethnicities in one beautiful country but not at the expense of native people(s). You do realize at the time of January 26 1778 Australia wasn't even called Australia right? So it makes no sense to call Australia that because the term' Australia' was not officially established. On January 1 1901 the states of Australia federated and gained independence from the British and was officially dubbed Australia. January 1 1901 is more academically accurate in terms of Australia's foundation while maintaining political correctness towards the indigenous population.
      Perhaps you best open a history book and educate yourself on your 'beautiful' country

    • @zeehee1231
      @zeehee1231 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps to your ignorant, privileged, opulent ass the meaning of Australia day has 'evolved' but you seem to remain oblivious to the plights of the native peoples. When the British arrived in Port Jackson they didn't just arrive. They brought multitudes of disease with them and a superiority complex which would eventually dictate the aboriginal peoples fate. Till this day Aboriginal people are suffering as a result of colonisation. Many Aboriginals are unemployed, uneducated and unlawful because of the invasion. The way you said 'Don't judge us' further proves my point that you alienate non-whites and emphasises my point that you're a true racist. Hopefully some of my tolerance and smartness will rub off on you by having this conversation. :)

      It's actually Britain. They did an international survey on it. I've heard more than one Australian say that they could not believe how nice everyone was to them while they were visiting in America. Part of that is because we're not as blunt and in our culture humility is actually valued and obnoxiousness is look down upon...overall. I think if you've never been to America you'll have that misconception and certainly don't look at the internet comments as a true indicator of what Americans are like overall, because the most idiotic people post in the comment section.

I'm so pissed, I normally love your videos but this is the worst video I've ever seen. If you go to Sydney, half the suburbs are filled with Koreans, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indians, Africans and practically every other Asian you can find. JUST because there's proof of one Australian lady, DOESN'T mean that ALL Australians are racist! I'm so pissed!

      Queensland might be like that, but that's only a small part of Australia. NSW is the most populated state in Australia and never have I ever heard a racist comment. You can't identify yourself as an Australian Expert when you've only been in on state. I may be right or wrong but this video is probably the most racist to us Australians. "Closet Racism?" This whole entire video was racist to us Australians. I've been an Australian my whole life and practically everything rude about Australian in this video is wrong for Sydney citizens. Sure most Asian parents want us to be doctors, surgeons, lawyers or other jobs that require you to study in university for years, but who cares! Typical Asian family! I can rant on for hours and hours about how racist this video. Stop thinking that America is better than Australia. Have you ever looked into the Oxford Dictionary? Racist- a person who believes that a particular race is superior to another.

Actually after living here for a long time especially the ones born here, they become racist themselves more towards new migrants regardless of racial background. Racism will always be a part of any culture more because of ignorance than anything else.

    Australians are not racist, they are just generally blunt. I would say that there is a percentage of the population that is racist, but the Aussie sense of humour (yes, i added a 'u' because that is how we spell that word here,) is often misinterpreted. If an Aussie is being racist towards you and you turn it into a joke, you'll have a friend for life, but if you take offence it puts up a barrier between you and the person who is making the racist comments. I wish that people wouldn't make nasty comments about other people to begin with, but it's part of the tall poppy syndrome that is synonymous with Australian culture. If you are anything that deviates from the norm, then at least one point in your life you will have to face some form of verbal abuse, it's how you react to it that determines the outcome. Laugh along and turn it into a joke and it probably won't escalate and will probably never be mentioned again, take offence and you'll never hear the end of it. People with red hair and pale skin will know what I am talking about. By the way, I am a tri-lingual caucasian Australian who can speak two Asian languages :)

      Of course there are certain communities where the demographics are very different. If you live in Katherine you'll likely have a relatively high percentage of indigenous kids in your class. If you live in Cabramatta you'll likely have a higher percentage of lebanese/middle-eastern kids in your class. But in MOST Australian communities, whites make up a much higher percentage.

Basically, Australia is more racially diverse. Secondly, I am a Malaysian of whom has lived in Australia all his life, and I have experienced no racism whatsoever. Also, Malaysians are not a minority, with the 9th most common immigrant population, and nationalities like Indians, Filipinos and South Africans coming before it. That lady on the bus is what, 1 one of 23 million? Before you make quick judgements about Australia, just have a look at how beautiful this country has become, and how much it has flourished as a nationally diverse country.

    Not a massive fan on how this was portrayed, as an Aussie who loves Asia it's culture and people I feel like I just got slapped in the face, I will say most wasn't false but it is out of context, I've learnt Japanese and Mandarin in school on top of that also Italian and French. and on my own I've been learning Korean, I've lived in most states for long periods of times, including inner city and rural, you'll find most of the things said only apply to some states and even then mostly rural areas. There are areas where mostly Asians live that might as well be Asia, Springvale comes to mind. Where White Australians are the minority. My school and workplaces might as well be model UN with the amount of cultures/languages/races Australia is very multicultural, Melbourne in particular. Keep in mind extremely racist people like the video had shown are very rare especially ones who act like that in public let alone right to someones face, yes aussies are blunt and straightforawrd and honest but we are also accepting and our way of showing affection often is understood but some people, we tend to nickname each other, take the piss out of eachother, etc true aussie humour can be hard to understand and can sometimes be interpretted as racist because we don't tiptoe around things like race or beliefs we have everything out in the open whereas other cultures especially americans seem more secretive and withheld only feeling comfortable around their small social circle. before i get backlash from whomever decides to actually read this, of course this is just my opinion experience and i am bias as i've lived in nicer places around more educated and well travelled people rather than racist or hateful idiots in general.

Australia is filled with Asian-Haters, people who seem to think they have right over the land then they do - but seem oblivious to the fact that we don't either.
