I was the only kid in my friendgroup that went with the Saturn instead of the playstation. Being a sega fanboy I refused to switch to another brand of gaming. As we all know the Saturn bummed (at least in the Netherlands) and even the mighty Dreamcast couldn`t save Sega. I still loved it though. So many awesome games! Back then I even bought some games that are considered extremely rare these days. Dragon Force, Shining Force 3 and even Panzer Dragoon Saga. I keep on to these and play them once in a while for nostalgia (even though I prefer playing modern games). I`d only sell them if I`d be rock bottom financialy. I really wish my good`ol Saturn lightguns would work on my modern TV so my daughter and me could should some zombies in House of the Dead.

    • @johnboydojo
      @johnboydojo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

A guy from Coventry England invented lightgun's that actually work on modern TV's!
Called the Sinden Lightgun you can find them online. However they only work with pc and raspberry pi's (and a few mini classic consoles I believe?!) currently.
Maybe picking up a couple and getting down the awesome Sega model 2 emulator and some roms is the way to go buddy!
One model he makes even have recoil!

I only have a Saturn because it was on clearance at Target in 1998 for $20. I got the system plus games for $2-$5 apiece. I never got a PlayStation so I LOVED my Saturn. NiGHTS, Croc, Last Gladiators digital pinball… my system was wonderful for me, especially because we were anything but rich. I still have my Saturn with its box, though I don’t have most of the boxes for the games, I do have the inserts. I think I’ll go play NiGHTS right now!

A friend of mine who passed away in 2017 had a Saturn and we had a lot of fun with it. Now it's his son's of course. I never managed to get a Saturn as I was still collecting for other systems. Here in USA the Saturn's games have gotten ridiculously expensive almost unbuyable so collectors do the same they buy Japanese. Good review and cool video Wicked!👍

In my region, Sega Saturn was just nowhere to be found. Even on a gaming show (local tv channel) they couldn't found a PAL version, but had to use Japanese one. When I was doing some digging around on how one can get his hands on one (~1997), the dealers would just shrug their shoulders, told me to pick up my passport and fly to Japan!
I saw PAL Saturn once. Only once. November 2021. And that was on the on-line auction site. Just a console. No controller. Broken case. Cover for the save game battery is missing. Asking price: ~€100. Even the seller couldn't verify does the console actually work, since he didn't had a game for it!
Addendum: few years ago, a copy of Symphony of the Night for PS1 was on auction site. Auction started with €5. It was eventually sold for €99!

Great video. I love the Saturn as its one of those consoles that passed me by. I picked up a PAL machine for dirt cheap years ago and still have it today with a few original games. The PAL boxes are horrible though. I mainly scour for Japanese software and machines nowadays and will probably keep two machines as I would like an original and one with an ODE of some kind, ideally the MODE but i'm not ready to shell out MODE money right now. I would also like to do a shell project at some point. Keep up the great vids.

The Saturn, Neo Geo and the PC-Engine are probably my favourite retro consoles (Saturn still being #1); as I grew up mainly playing in the arcade. Owning them really brings the arcade experience home. I have owned the original Japanese system and games from launch in the '90s, so I don't have to worry about modern pricing (though I do regret selling some titles); but at this point I think playing burned disks is pretty much fine (rather than spending the ludicrous pricingf for originals). I would recommend checking out the mission stick peripheral if you don't already have one - Space Harrier and Panzer Dragoon are really excellent with it.
I'm personally very fussy with control pads (there are many terrible ones out there). But the retro-bit controllers are pretty much 1:1 with the original Saturn pad (best pad ever made IMHO) and the 2.4GHz wireless ones are great -- they come with USB dongles for use on MisterFPGA/PC and the original hardware. I use them on my supergun and with MAME.

The real problem with collecting for Saturn is that it isn't the '90s anymore. Saturn was one of the first systems to really blow up in collecting circles price-wise, and there was only a relatively short window in which it was fairly cheap. If I hadn't been buying back then, I'd be priced out now.

The Sega Saturn is not only a nightmare to collect for but it has become almost expensive as collecting for the Neo Geo AES. I know because I have a substantial collection of both. I got supremely lucky with my Saturn games as I bought one the same day I picked up my PlayStation the day it launched. I never got rid of any of my games and they're all in perfect order. I have all three Panzer Dragoon games, Burning Rangers, Dragon Force, Die Hard Arcade, ect...

Best hardware and most sturdy as well. Not like dreamcast which is terrible. Owned about 8 and none have a working disc drive, so now use gdemu.

I still have one somewhere i think... not sure if i sold it or not. But i made the mistake of selling most consoles in my childhood, just to buy the next generations of them. However i regret it big time. I even sold the commodore 64 🤦‍♂🤦‍♂. However buying them all again, no its not worth it, cos if your really honest, it will be more for just owning them then you will actually play games on them, cos the fact is, you wont. At the time we wore out every console we owned with hours of playtime till our fingers hurt 😂. But just for collecting them so you own them, in my opinion its not worth it at all. Not to mention the huge amount it will cost you to get the consoles, controllers, accessories and not to forget games. So i prefer emulation myself, so you can still play some of those oldies when you may want to. It were certainly the golden years 😍😍😍😍

I was collecting Sega Saturn maybe 10yrs ago but i got SICK of it and sold everything away... it really was a nightmare... you think the boxes in Europe are cheap and break easily? You havent seen the ones from the US/CAN. Then there's the Price gouging... then the resellers which puts way higher prices than they're worth... but it was also SUPER CRAZY HARD to find ANYTHING... collecting US games is not so bad at start... the common games are... pretty common... but then you get to the rare stuff and by god they are EXCESSIVELY RARE and COST SO MUCH and chances are they are in bad shapes too if you ever find them. I had the original Cart that goes in the back of the console... the original was a piece of Sh!#... kept corrupting my saves non-stop... so now even playing games became dreadfull. the 3D Controller was ma favorite but it's cheaply made and the L/R triggers breaks so damn easy! The fight pad tho is still to this day, one of the better gamepad ever created.

I never had an issue with the first party memory carts. But always had an issue with the interact ones. Those things wouldn't even save my shit. I return so many when I was younger.

    I'm in America.
Saturn games are not that easy to get. Well, Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter 1 and 2, Virtua Cop 1 and 2, and Sega Touring Championship are few of those that are easy to get.
(sigh) One day, I'll get the Satiator.

Man, those cases are pretty bad, but the US cases break just by looking at them funny. The Poly-carbonate material has just not aged well. I remember for a while, people were buying the terrible titles just for the cases for less than $10 USD in most cases, prompting even those to spike up in price eventually. At least more than one option is available these days to replace them with an OEM quality alternative. I'm surprised no one has tried to recreate the PAL region ones, given that at least they could conceivably be manufactured from more durable materials now.
Anyway, Saturn game prices are ridiculous now - I've only got about a dozen titles, thanks to the fact that I started collecting about 7 years ago. I got a few gems in there, like the Nights bundle complete in box with the analog controller, Galactic Attack, Both Virtua Fighters, and Daytona USA CE... OH, and I was able to get a copy of Tomb Raider, which ironically is the game I was able to see side by side in store running next to the PlayStation. I decided to buy a PlayStation based on that comparison, lol.
Japanese games are not bad, but if you're a fan of fighting games or shmups, forget about it. If only I could read Japanese... 😔Anyway, I gave up and purchased a Satiator last year - Sure, it's the most expensive ODE on the market at about $250, but I see it as 1/4 of the cost of Panzer Dragoon Saga. If you ask me, TOTALLY WORTH IT!!!

I dunno here. Maybe it's just me, but I'm a gamer 1st, collector 2nd. I'm not concerned with a case or manual, but more concerned with a good condition disc. I put them all in a DVD binder for saving space and convenience anyhow.

Buy a Psuedo Saturn Kai to play burned games if you just wanna play the games.
That particular ram cart has the 4mb of ram and a region unlocker to play imports. You think I'm paying $300 dollars for Policenauts?!! 🤣🤣🤣
And if you really want official games, buy Japanese games since they are WAY cheaper since the Saturn was massively popular there.

Great video! Very helpful for people new to the Saturn system! Good job!
I still have all of my original Sega Saturn pal collection including gems like Panzer Dragoon saga and Burning Rangers! Brought a Japanese Model 2 (white) system about 12 years ago and have loved it ever since. Incredibly easy to mod!
The Pal model 1 (mark1) console you have is an absolute Nightmare to mod due to the main board being a pain in terms of fitting a 50/60hrtz switch.
My advice if you want a Saturn? Buy a cheap Japanese model 2. Pick up a Phantom mod chip cheap (I got mine from the guy that actually invented the thing for £15!) And get an action replay +4mb all in one memory cart and *cough* obtain the games you want! 😉
Don't try and play a pal version of Panzer Dragoon saga on a Japanese machine with an action replay cart as you will KILL IT! (The action replay that is!) Download an American ROM and change the region to Japanese with a region patcher. It takes 2 seconds 🙂
Obviously that's if you want to use CDs.
SD is probably the best way to go but damn it's crazy expensive! It will get cheaper over time though I'm sure.
Oh and the Virtua stick you have is the Japanese version which is the only one that includes microswitches. The Pal and NTSC A versions do not! (I also have one and it's great!)
I love the Sega Saturn. It was a 2d powerhouse and the fact that the fan translation scene is really great means that I'm still playing new games (to me!) Every couple of years!
Every retro gamer should own a Sega Saturn. Sega's best console by far!

Hey, you're saying playing Pal PD Saga on a JP console damages it, How? I've never heard about this, I've already done a few playthroughs with it. my AR card sometime ago strangely crashed and lost all of my saves, was that related?

    • @johnboydojo
      @johnboydojo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@JetWolfEX Panzer Dragoon is the only game that uses a copy protection purely to combat action replays! Download an American ROM and region patch it to Japanese mate! I killed the memory and the action replay part of my first cart just from trying to play my Panzer Dragoon saga PAL on my JPN machine. You're lucky you just lost your saves buddy!
Edit: My twin brother got my old cart purely for the 1-4mb upgrade. Rest of it was dead!

@@johnboydojo Good to know, thanks for the info!
I already have ways to play without a real copy, or I could get a pal system and convertor if I had to.
I used a fan code to bypass the copy protection, but no one has mentioned what you just told me, and I'm sure I'm not the only one that plays it that way, could be a lot of people that bricked their AR that way.

    • @johnboydojo
      @johnboydojo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@JetWolfEX Yeah after I killed my first cart I went and had a Google and found a Reddit post with people discussing it. Also found old articles that mentioned the copy protection too. Shame I found out the hard way! Hahaha
Sega Saturn region patcher is easy to find and use. I did all my brother's games for him JPN region and they're all still in English, bar Die Hard Arcade! You have to patch that one as it switches language depending on the region machine you're playing on. Much like the Neo Geo CD

I bought a Saturn on the day it was released in the UK, several of my friends also had Saturns, infact I only knew 1 guy who had a Playstation back then, how strange is that ?
I sold my Saturn when I got my first gaming PC back in '97, I kind of regret that now, I have thought about getting another from time to time, if I ever do I'll probably go for a Japanese model.
The cost is a little prohibitive though so I'll probably stick to collecting for my Megadrive for the time being , with all the new Megadrive games being made now it's more than enough to keep me occupied.

The Action Reply 4M Plus is half the price of the All in One and still comes with region unlocking, 1-4MB RAM upgrades (which are mostly only used in fighting games, it seems), includes 4MB of memory, and allows you to cheat in games.
I love that controllers and peripherals for the Saturn are really cheap. Shame that games are not. Wish people could reproduce discs. Once people are able to do that, prices won't be so bad. Like, am I going to care if my copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga is not an official copy if the thing works? No. No I am not. Get to it nerds.

I'm pretty sure they are reproduced discs on the market, 25% of my collection are from repo’s. Blank CD-R printed + case customized. There are some groups that still resells them on Etsy especially. Mad Box Production was a giant producer, and made the jewel case and box gorgeous with their creativity.
