The Raven Guard were the XIX Legion of the original Space Marine Legions. Their Primarch is Corvus Corax . Their homeworld is Deliverance (originally named Lycaeus), a moon which orbits the Hive World Kiavahr. The Legion was devastated at the outbreak of the Horus Heresy and survived only by the most desperate of measures.
The Raven Guard specialize in guerrilla warfare, moving behind enemy lines with unrivaled stealth and striking with precise application of force.
Fun coincidence, in the wild Raven’s and Wolves have learned to be natural friends. Ravens find prey for Wolves and then get to share. There’s even documented accounts of Ravens playing fetch with wolf pups.
This is always one of my favourite nature facts. The idea that two extremly different species make bonds and manage to find a way to help each other in nature is so cool
Didn’t you both leave the exact same comments before on the last video?

I'm both very surprised because that's fascinating and also not surprised at all given that those are two of the most intelligent animals.
Basically the thing about the Raven Guard "depression" is that they care about the lives of ordinary humans, but unlike Salamanders they fully realize that galaxy is incredibly fucked place and sometimes they have to sacrifice those they want to protect
So... Salamanders are stupidly optimistic and Raven Guard are stupidly pesymistic?
@@Rapture-nv5vjthey’re realistic and they know everything is fucked up

Surprised Bricky didnt quote corvus talking about that time when he was a young boy and his father took him into the city to see the marching band.
Yea I literally cried when he asked Corvus to be the saviour of the broken, the beaten and the damned. And the foreshadowing of “Will you defeat them? Your demons, and the plans they have made?” Such a good moment.
This is a Black Parade reference, right? (Only know the song I’m passing) 😅
Sky burial is very specific: the body is placed on a special scaffold so that ground scavengers can’t tear the body apart and break the bones. The body should be eaten by birds and the bones are left intact.
I always thought that had to do with cremation
Some sky scavengers eat bones too. There’s one kind of eagle who’s entire diet consists of bone marrow.
Let's not forget, when Corvus confronted Curze and there was a passage from Sevatar's perspective where he describes them moving in the shadows as a trick on the eyes and their sensors were only somewhat making out their shape until they stepped out of the shadows. The Raven Guard put fear into the Night Lords lmao
Also, just to show how casual Space Marines can be:
In „Son of the Forest“, Zabriel, a Fallen, goes to search for more Fallen to meet up with The Lion and he found them by basically looking up the local Bar of a town. From there followed the trails and found 3 Fallen in like a bunker hiding where they acted like the 3 stooges, played cards and acted like the veteran uncles you have in your Family
Corvus Corax upon leaving the Warp: “I’m sad. It’s too bright. I wanna go back in the warp. Wanting to go outside was a terrible idea, the warp does not judge, it just hates.
Corax when finds Lorgar: “Hey bro, wanna be a dead body?!”
Corax when he sees what the imperium has become: “The pain and depression I feel is so transparent that I’m pretty it has become its own Chaos god by now.”
Local Ogryn: “Aaagh, what’s a chaos goud?”

Its not specific to the Raven Guard themselves, but i was hoping Bricky would bring up the story of the Raven Guard captured by the Tau who withstood psychic interrogation until dozens of Tau were in his mind, then forced his hearts to stop and send a psychic feedback into the interrogators killing them with him
Sounds rad, what's the source?
@@dapperultron1784 I can't remember exactly, it's supposedly an early encounter between the Tau and Space Marines
Problem. Tau don't have psykers (absolutely zero psyker potential, their souls are dim to the point they're somewhat invisible to daemons) so there's an incredibly large hole there
@@HideyoshiKinoshita84 yeah it wasn't through Warp powers but some other means I can't remember to access his mind, maybe something the Ethereals do
I think it's called Broken Sword
I think he's name was Brother-Sergeant Herek Cornix of the Raven Guard.
What also helps with the stealth is they tend to use Mk6 armor (the one with the beaky helmets), which is lighter weight and quieter. During the crusade most of the other primarchs hated it, while the Raven Guard loved that mk of armor, so much so it is also known as Corvus Pattern Powerarmor
Primarchs: A lighter armor for speed? Cringe.
Corax: I'LL TAKE YOUR ENTIRE STOCK-
The beak also houses a lot more sensors etc than any other armour patterns, increasing situational awareness and battle analysis
In fairness they initially offered it to the Iron Warriors and the Salamanders. Neither is really the target audience for such a product.
@consolescrub4031 In fairness, Perturabo pulled strings to get most of the stock sent to the Raven Guard because he was certain that such an atrophied legion (this was after Gate 42) was going to have problems, and then he could blame their failure partially on the Mk6 armour to get the whole project shelved.
That did not turn out quite how he wanted it to.
@christopherclayton5500 yep, they performed better than usual with the armor, thus ensuring the mk6 saw full production.
Good ol' Peter Turbo. Once again his pettiness activity blows up in his face
The acquisition of the korvia is the final test for an aspirant, its not for meditation. Fun fact, Shrike caught 2 of them. The korvia skulls are brought back to Kiavar and buried among the trees, returning the spirits to where they came.
The sable brand somewhat has two stages. The first is the more present voices and whispers of the fallen. The second is when they become belligerent, uncaring for their own safety and actively refusing to follow orders, drawing further and further inside themselves. Eventually they do become practically suicidal and there is rarely recovery from this point. Another fun fact: supposedly this is the reason for the creation of the first Moritat during the great crusade, corax himself authorising it and maximising what marines he has. All legions created moritats following the efficacy of those of the raven.
Wraithslip is very much a rare thing among the raven guard and their successors, like in 40k they are a hanful across all sons of corax. It seems to have some form psychic component to it, willing the enemy to not register their presence in their minds but it is only made better through discipline and training. Muffling their armour etc is stuff they learn as scouts but likely improved upon when in armour.
Stealth isn't their only thing though. A tank doesnt have to be stealthy. Hell, I believe it is the Black Guard successor chapter that makes extensive use of vindicators in sudden and devastating ambushes
As far as i know, the iron hands basically only showed up with a bucket load of terminators backing up Ferrus. The backlash from that mess is what caused the whole cybernetic obsession.
In fairness wraithslipping is one of the strongest powers to have, as shown by Sharrowkyn using it to kill Lucius in a duel. I'd be curious to see what's the prevalence of wraithslipping is compared to other traits like foresight in the Night Lords. The guys who could wraithslip were known as the Mors Deythan I believe and although they have been reinstated after the fall of Cadia, the Lexicanum lists the current number of members as 4.
My boys. My main army is Raven Guard 6th company because I find the idea of space marines who fight for local populaces who are inacting a rebellion fascinating. Though I am buildin my first company and I plan on buying those new scouts for my tenth.
Ravenguard are badass! Definitely unique and underrated and overlooked but I guess that's canonical lol.
So fun fact. Remember those first 500 members of the Raptor project who weren't messed up? Who as Bricky put it, turned out really good. They formed the Raptors successor chapter, and as a result have more stable geneseed than their parent chapter.
They are also canon "reasonable marines" as they wear drab green armor (often with camo), specialize in snipers and marksmen, and overall act more like actual modern-day special forces in terms of their tactics
Honestly, the raptors successor chapter are underrated
No, the raptors chapters are not from the successful raptors of the raptor project, at least it's never truly confirmed. If they were truly from the raptors of the raptor project, it'd be weirdly stupid decision as the successful raptors of the raptor projects are essentially what you call a "space marine premium upgrade".
If the primaris marine are side grades of the firstborn space marine, raptors from the project are essentially in between primarch and space marine level, just below custodians. The initiates that went under the surgery were able to spar against veterans in a 9:1 ratio, almost completely dominating the veterans in hand to hand combat, even the mutated ones were able to fight a space wolf wulfen(?) in melee fairly easily.
If anything these guys would most likely have either stayed in the main chapter and the raptor chapters were just named in memory of those that died in the project, or the chapter just have a few of the remaining raptor as overseer. Since why would you have one of your best elite squad all be removed from your main legion?
@midnightecho8228 the reason they aren't as good as the full raptor marines is because there wouldn't have been enough of those to make a full chapter. Thus their superior geneseed got mixed with standard Ravenguard geneseed.
Thus they only really got the benefits of more stable geneseed, but lost all the other improvements
Essentially having the superior raptor geneseed has long since been diluted within the chapter, but still had helped them be more stable and less prone to geneseed flaws. Like the only flaw they still have is the super pale skin: none of the other Ravenguard issues are present in the chapter
@@thewerdna Again, still never confirmed raptor chapter are formed by raptors other than it's just a memorial namesake. If there's an excerpt that actually confirms this please do let us know, otherwise it really is just a fan theory; much like how some people now theorized raptors are night lord descendants after them being "wiped out" in 35th millenium instead of just hiding.
But there genseed is not stable as they alos miss the sams organd as the raven guard but they also got depression (not kidding) as a flaw in there geneseed
Remember that Marneus gave the Raven Guard a load of Primaris reinforcements (including Shrike who crossed the Rubicon Primaris). The Chapter is now back to full strength.
I figured the Ravenguard stealth was like Evisor assassins. Can't be seen if there are no witnesses
Snap, crackle, ba-cawk!
From the shadows.
Prettymuch, just quieter. They're still Space Marines, their job is still to stack bodies like split firewood, they just like to do it without raising the alarm until the job's already done. The Raven Guard are one of the chapters that has a vague presence in the Spinward Front, so one of the times I employed Space Marines in Only War, it was a squad of Raven Guard clearing out a gun fortress on the down-low while the Imperial Guard was trying to break through. All the Guard knew was that occasionally one of the big scary Punisher Cannons on the gun fortress would just... stop shooting. When they finally got into the fortress, there were just bodies *everywhere*.
I think it's very much a case of picking their fights. They approach silently to limit their target's ability to call reinforcements then hit them as fast as possible using fighters and jump packs, kill everyone present then get out before any help can arrive. It's like Night Lords in that they pick the critical targets with the greatest vulnerability with the slight difference they prefer to go for military commanders rather than infants.
That's Night Lords stealth.
@@consolescrub4031 "rather than infants." bit slayed me lol
If you guys want to do an episode on a Raven Guard character, Nykona Sharrowkyn is your guy. The chaddiest chad of the entire Heresy!
Very happy to see my favorite legion getting some spotlight! The Raven Guard really needs some more lore and love from both GW and the 40K community at large. Yeah, Space Wolves and Raven Guard have a nice relationship; Corvus, after all, saved Leman Russ' life during the Heresy at Yarant.
I wouldn't say that they have never recovered from the Dropsite Massacre...that was 10,000 years ago. The real issue with the Raven Guard and their lower numbers (compared to other legions/chapters) is the corruption of their gene-seed (thanks Alpha Legion). Overall, though, the RG has never been a large legion, even before the Heresy, as they really don't need to be, considering their role, tactics, and specialty.
when Bricky talked about the "trifold path of shadows", I legit thought Corvus teaching was gonna be: "bashing a power claw through the skull." 😅
But it’s more; sneak up and bash a lightning claw through the BACK of the skull.
@@cappinjocj9316 ::gork OR mork:: "OI! WRITE DAT DOWN! WRITE DAT DOWN YA GIT!"
So, something that’s easily forgotten is that 40K is a Sci-Fi taking place 38,000 years into the future. What seems impossible to us in the present may very well be easily achieved because someone figured it out how to achieve it, and the Imperium is simply replicating it without fully understanding it.
So, the Corvus Pattern armor, whose name sake comes from Corvus Corax and is a mainstay of the Raven Guard since the Heresy, may very well be utilizing all sorts of instruments and equipment that we don’t know of to run completely silently.
Think of the Tesla cars. Their engines are completely silent despite being cars. It’s not hard to imagine that at some point in the far future someone could have figured out how to get a suit of power armor to do the same, especially a chapter as dedicated to Special Forces tactics as the Raven Guard.
Also, that’s another thing. The Raven Guard aren’t just stealth. They’re Special Forces. They perform surgical and decapitating strikes on an unsuspecting enemy. If a Thunderhawk full of Dark Furies (the Horus Heresy models DK was fawning over) flies by, sure the approach will be completely silent but the slaughter that’ll ensue will not.
This is also why I love the Raven Guard (and Alpha Legion) so much. They use their super soldiers like they’re supposed to be. Not sitting behind walls, but as javilen driven clean through the heart of the enemy, one with the raw bulk to make sure nothing can stop it.
The Raven Guard deploy their Marines like the UNSC deploys Spartans and they get similarly successful results
I’d argue the white scars do the same thing without stealth. They don’t sit behind walls, they’re storm troopers that charge the most important target at ridiculous speeds before you can even figure out what’s happening.
I'm so glad my bois finally got their episode.
I was convinced they recorded this years ago. Bjt kept it hidden for the bit
Shadow Warden Toretto: we dont have serfs, we have family
One of my favorite things about Raven Guard that y'all didn't mention is all the references to the Native American cultures.
Their way of battle is very "native american" with hiding from the enemy and picking them off from as far away as possible or getting as close to the enemy as they can and forcing them to fight in mele. One of their initiation trials is sending an aspirant onto the surface of Kiavahr where they're tasked with catching a raven whose bones they then use to craft an amulet they carry with them at all times which also doubles as a sachet where they keep small bits and bobs that are important to them. And something which makes them really cool in my eyes is that they give a damn about civilians, they care arguably just as much as the Salamanders. They have a different way of showing that and they're more pragmatic about helping out mortal humans than the Salamanders, but they do care and not being able to help bothers them, makes them angry and sad.
"The Raven Guard are like the Alpha Legion, if they were loyalist..."
What do you mean *if* they were loyalist?
The Alpha legion is very confusing
Victorus aut Mortis is honestly my favorite 40k motto, it’s just simple Victory or Death

Raven Guard are a favorite legion of mine and I absolutely love their lore and characters. Sharrowkyn is amazing and I love him!
Victorus Aut Mortis!
Here's a thing about this truth trial. Every chapter gives physically and mentally challenging btasks to weed out the weak, but the gene seed and upgrades and extensive training make it possible to overcome inhuman tasks. But here, there is basically nothing that can prepare you. All you can do is be honest with yourself and have the guts to speak your true mind.
Definitely hoping for a short RG character episode. Sharrowkyn and Shrike are some of my favorite characters in the lore and I do wish they had gotten their time in the spotlight this episode.
That "tank silencer" is an actual thing, the Bundeswehr use it at an artillery range that's relatively close to civilisation so they came up with that to stop getting constant complaints, its basically a giant structure that the SPG (self propelled artillery, not a tank) drive up to it and attach, its design to contain and slow down the gasses from the muzzle blast of firing, its still dangerously loud but doesn't carry for miles and miles.
Ravenguard were originally recruited from the Asiatic Dustfields. Asiatic. They're stealthy. Space Ninja.

Man I really misjudged Corvus and the Raven Guard. Always assumed they are just edgy boys (and they still are), but honestly they are kinda cool and its always nice when there is a space marine chapter that actually gives a shit about people.
The issue with the RG is that GW does nothing with them , so the community perception is the only factor many people have
and well the Community likes making memes and often that overtakes the truth

I like to think ravenguard aren't eadgy at all. gotta love the idea of the raven guard using sound dampening foam into their power armor to quiet it when the IG has access to Stummer fields that just dampen all sound almost completely lmao
Please do a Soul Drinkers episode and book club for their omnibus, it would be badass.
As for the Ravens Guard being stealthy. They explain in the same White Wolf explained Obfuscation. They don't disappear. Their "warp" ability reaches into other people's minds and forces them to overlook the Son of Corax.
Those are mostly their specialized unit, the Mor Deythan. Raven Guard who have inherited Corax' ability.
Other than that, the Raven Guard practice a martial art that is akin to ninjutsu where they remain undetected, which isn't exactly described how other than it being stated.
Other instances of Raven Guard actually using wraith slipping is when Sharrowkyn vanished into thin air when Lucius was about to give him the killing blow. To the point Lucius describes him as being too fast moving like a "wraith"
My favourite Dark Age of Technology prowess is that they've reached a non agression pact with the Orks by using swarms of killing nanobots that instantly destroyed any Waaagh they encountered, removing all fun from the fight XD
How do you force Orks to make peace? You obliterate them with something they can't fight ˆˆ
The raven guard got sneakers on, that's why they are quiet.
Wait...so is that a real Tank Silencer?
Not really stealthy, but it would be weird for a position to get hit by a tank shell and be like "WHERE DID THAT COME FROM?!?!?!"
The tank was colored purple, obviously
"Vulkan, stop unintentionally killing my son.”
Also, Ravens and Crows fly in muders. So you know. Smart.
Wow! I'm really into the Raven Guard now. Thanks guys!

Raven guard seems more metal then emo.
The idea that a silencer would do anything for a bolter is hilarious given that you are firing a projectile which has not only a build in rocket to propel it, but also explodes when it hits the target.
I suppose people are still going to know someone just got half their body removed by an explosion but they might not know where the explosion came from. It could just be something to launch it a short distance away before the rocket ignites. For targets that aren't incredibly armoured they can always take a leaf out of Corvus's book who killed several Iron Warriors by throwing rocks.

@@ElStinkador we NEED a 40k version of the Raven starring Lorgar and Corax
A notable Ravenguard that needs to be talked about in some future episode is Nykona Sharrowkyn. He was a Heresy era marine and considered in the top 5 greatest Astartes fighters in history.
His most notable feat is he is the only known person to kill Lucius without turning into him. Since he felt zero pride doing so, since as he told Lucius himself "It gives me no pleasure to do this. You are nothing to me, simply a rabid dog that needs to be put down."
He also successfully snipes Fulgrim in the head (Fulgrim lives because he's a primarch, and he had the fastest regeneration of any of his brothers second only to Vulcan)
Don't forget that he killed Lucius the second time they fought, he'd already faced him once and was winning. He's basically *the* 30k Raven Guard even more so than Corvus.
Sharrowkyn needs an episode. The man who bodies Luscious twice and snipe Fulgrim in the face. He deserves the respect of an episode
isnt he still alive in stasis or something too?
@chucklytell allegedly. He delivered the gene seed to Cawl for the Primaris project, protected by Mangus for a little bit. Then his ship get attacked and gets into a stasis pod or something. His story stops there. So his story is left unfinished
The last member of a pretty cool warband. He also sucker punched Fabius Bile when he was tormenting the Salamander apothecary. I do love the interaction with that apothecary though since Salamanders have basically thermal vision so he just randomly looks up and sees Sharrowkyn hanging from the ceiling.
@americanman3745 which I believe if he was found alive, that would make him the only living loyalist space marine from the Horus heresy. He would also make a great replacement for Shrike, since Shrike wants someone else to take his place. Although idk if Games Workshop will do that since it would mean completely changing their chapter master model

Fun fact: darker greens, greys, and especially blues are often better for stealth than pitch black because a black silhouette shows up more easily visually against backgrounds, because pitch black shows up very little in nature
That said, the black paint we use on stuff like stealth bombers helps to counteract radar by absorbing it and converting it into heat, so I like to imagine that's one reason the Ravenguard use black armor
In 40k there is also black armour colouring that completely absorbs light, like completely void. Admittedly it is predominantly used by the deathwatch
@@hammer1349 funny thing is we have something extremely similar IRL with the some of the blackest paints such as Vanta Black, Blk 2. 0, and Blk 3 .0
As that's just how black as a color works, it absorbs visible light rather than bouncing it back like normal colors, iirc Vantablack absorbs around 99.6% of all light and Blk 2. 0 is supposed to be darker than that, so it would still just kinda make them look like a very black smudge in reality.
There's always some form of background lighting or radiation that gives a slight "glow" to things (even human beings "glow" a little bit) so funnily at a certain point except for a few circumstances you would actually be counterintuitively making yourself stick out more by being "too dark" for a dark environment
@baddragonite I have actually experienced that glow, it was very weird with some very strange natural lighting that made my hands glow orange ish
Yes. That and you also stand out like a lemon when viewed through nightvision.
That's why the Raven Guard successor the most obsessed with stealth (who happen to be called Raptors, but not the Raptors of the Heresy-era) wear basically camo-green armor, repaint it when necessary, and go into battle completely silent.
The Tank silencer at the end is real. It was designed specifically for use on training ranges in Germany so the sound of gun blasts wouldn't be as intrusive in nearby towns
That is such a more sensible reason than anything I came up with, and I'm both glad and sad to know.
Of course the germans would be so considerate
It's also for heavy artillery, not tanks.
I know everyone calls the RG emo kids; but I see Corvus and hear Nathan Explosion. Like he’s black metal but he’s a nice guy and has a surprisingly good relationship with his dad. Couple things left out; RG are known for their heavy usage of their neophytes (scouts), they actually do wear less armor and Horus and Perty tried to trick them into it thinking less armor would be a handicap but it just made them more efficient, and it should be pointed out that Shrike actually also loves the RG successor chapter the Knights of the Raven to the point he calls them family and won’t accept infighting between the RG and Knights.
Only old farts still use the term "emo". What decade is this?
So something that was explained to me is that the skulls each Ravenguard adorns themselves with is from the bird the marine aspirant successfully hunted, and that same skull is recovered whenever possible in the event of the marine's passing on the battlefield. It is a small thing, but does demonstrate fairly empathetic and sentimental side to them, despite what their brooding demeanor might suggest.
The korvia, the bird skull, is pretty much the true mark of becoming a successful aspirant. It is the final test, the catch and kill and small, fast, paranoid bird with nothing but their bare hands. And Shrike caught two of them, though he believes that atleast the second one chose him given that it flew straight at him
@@hammer1349 It's a very cool story as they basically serve as slightly morbid dog tags. Often veteran marines would have a string of them recovered from their fallen brothers until they can return them home. It's interesting that the test there (which you probably know as it's referenced in Shrike's book but for the sake of the wider audience) is not to prove you can catch the bird. That's part of the test but they already know your stealth skills are good. It's a teamwork test.
@@hammer1349 That last part is actually kind of adorable.
Here for some Sharrowkyn! Baddest son of Corvus to ever Ka-kaw!
