I'm In Nail Stamping Hell!!

  • Hi everybody
    Today we’re going to do Mexican nails for Hayley’s trip to Mexico, they’ve already been now but these were done before they left.
    We’re also going to be using to amazing products from Jelly Stamper, it’s been a while so I’m a little rusty.
    I’m going to start with base coat and then do two coats of my background colours. I’ll then top coat to remove the sticky layer and seal in the nails I’m not doing stamping on.
    I’m going to do my stamping one nail at a time because the stamping gels dry so fast and don’t need curing. These plates are split into different layers so I’m going to start with the bottom section of one skull and pop my white paint on the plate, scrape off the excess and then roll my stamper onto the gel and then press it on the nail. I’ll do the same with the next bit in black and then with the super detailed bit is where it gets a bit hellish. I did three different colours and scraped off but when I did the stamper the gel didn’t transfer. If you mess up you have the clean the plate off before you try again, acetone and a cotton ball works best. We also eventually worked out that putting the colour higher than the section you want and scraping down works a bit better, but there was a lot of trail and error first. It was a little bit of a nightmare. Once that nail’s done, I’m going to top coat it and move onto the next nail.
    Obviously, I’m going to add bling and cuticle oil to finish these nails and maybe never do stamping again. If you have any tips, let me know in the comments below.
    Don’t forget to like, comment, and all that shebang!

    Probably awful to say this...but I'm gonna say it evenso, Seeing Kirsty struggle with anything nail related gives me hope that I'm not alone in the jelly stamping struggles.
    She's such a pro tho, she didn't give up and the Design turned out amazing.

    I’m sorry you had such a hard time! You should clean the plate each time and you have to stamp quickly. If it’s warmer in your room you would have more time to stamp (colder will set the polish too quickly). Some times it’s better to press the stamp on the plate rather than roll it and sometimes it’s better to have a slightly foggy stamper because it’s more textured to grip the polish. Also, scrape only once and do it at a 45 degree angle because you’ll scrape the polish out of the plate. I own a lot of stamping products especially from CJS and different engravings require different techniques. I hope this helps because CJS is really great once you get the hang of it. If all else fails, you can also use foil gel before stamping anything to make it adhere to the nail.

    I have the exact same stamper and I feel ya girl. No matter how fast I am, or different ways to try, I fail at stamping. Weirdly, this cheap stamper I got that came with some nail plates I got off Amazon works waaayy better. It's small, not clear and super hard but somehow works well. Watching you do stamping made me laugh because that is always my reaction when I stamp! Glad I'm not the only one who struggles cause they make it look so easy!

    The best tips I have found is Prime the stamper with a MR.CLEAN magic eraser and under cure the top coat so the stickiness grabs it even if it dried... Also prime the plate with a acetone wipe... Plate has to be wiped everytime or you won't pick up well...Temperature matters... You did amazing for your 1st time with this system ❣❣❣

    I have been there too!! Spent four hours with a very patient client one afternoon and could NOT get stamping to work for me. It either wouldn't pick up; or part of the design would pick up; or it would pick up but not transfer to the nail. I watched video after video on how to do it...nupe! I eventually lost my chit and, swearing like a trooper, I literally stamped/slammed my jelly stamper onto the plate. It worked perfectly - and has worked for me ever since. Sod 'rolling' the stamper onto the stamping plate - stamp it down onto the plate - works for me almost every time :-)

    Tips, since you’ll be reading! ♥️
    1. Hold the scraper at a 45° angle
    2. Roll the stamper quickly and lightly (you did good with this)
    3. Press the stamper firmly onto the nail and hold it for a couple seconds
    4. Don’t try to re-do a paint/scrape without cleaning the image first - the paint dries quickly and it dries inside the etching so if you try to just go over it, the new paint won’t go into the etching
    5. Clean with pure acetone, not nail polish remover or gel cleanser or alcohol (which is what I did without thinking at first lol)
    I hope you try again Kirsty, you would come up with some awesome designs and schemes!

    Use acetone to clean the plate. Keep your plate as grease free as possible so don't use any oil based removers. Wipe it EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU STAMP. It may seem time consuming but it is more frustrating when you consider the stress from when the stamper isn't picking up the image.
    Rough up your stampers if it's not picking up. Sometimes a stamper just won't work for whatever reason so make sure you have at least two spare. Pick up a new one and use it. They can be different ones. A jelly stamp may not work in one instance, but a marshmallow stamp may do the trick! The one that isn't working now may just work later on. (This is in the case of doing one layer. If you're doing more than one layer have more than one jelly stamper.)
    I also tend to put on a trip coat with each stamping layer, and this is important if you have lots of layers to stamp. You make a mistake on the final layer, but if you've got a top coat on underneath and you make a mistake you won't go back to square one.

    Hi Kirsty, I use CJS quite a bit and I find that if you clean your stamping plate after every use, it provides a cleaner stamp, use a small amount of polish, swipe once, quickly. make sure your swiper/scraper is also clean after every use, or after each stamp. Run your finger along the edge of the scaper you can run a buffer along the edges to provide a crisp edge. Also for the designs or patches if polish you don't want on the stamper, tap the scraper on the unwated polish on the scraper, or use your own nail to tap off what you don't want on the stamper. After you get the hang of it, it's quite fun. But your right sometimes the can look like stickers or decals. I find over layering does that. Hope these tips help and don't get discouraged. Congratulations on your Gel polish line. Good for you!!!!!!!
    Keep up your fantastic videos !! Thank you for everything you do ❤🙏

  • @ravenfly8318
    @ravenfly8318 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    A lot of people mentioned the 45° angle with your scraper but you're also scraping kind of hard. The harder you press with the scraper, no matter the angle, the more your scraper will flex down into the etching and remove too much of the paint, which gives you voids where it looks like you couldn't pick up the image. The same thing happens if you press too hard with your jelly stamper, whether it's rolled or just pressed straight down. If you press too hard with the stamper it pushes the paint aside and touches the bottom of the etching giving you more voids. Everything with stamping is a light touch. Hope this helped! Love your videos! 💖

    I love stamping! I’m happy to answer any questions you have! I always buff the topcoat first- gives better adhesion. With CJS the direction you scrape can be key- if it doesn’t work at first try a different direction. Cjs requires you roll stamp and press firmly onto nail and hold to apply. If a small spot doesn’t transfer just fill in w brush - you must, must, must clean each time w acetone. Etchings are super thin so any dry polish in there will prevent good pickup. I also will use a super tacky lint roller on my jelly head- and go over and over to be sure it’s dust, lint, and polish free.

    I love clear jelly stamper, so was amazing to see your video today. I have had similar struggles and so felt your frustration.
    You need to clean the plate after each application of polish, with 100% acetone, the repeated scraping and applying of polish without clean meant that the dried polish was in the etching and the new polish was resting smoothly on the top, hence no pick up. Scrape once at a 45° angle, and ensure your clean stamper is ready. And a light rolling action for pick up has worked the best for me, and use the scraper to remove anything you don't want transfered. I am useless at hand painted nail art, which you are the queen of, so don't be disheartened, but also don't give up, you incorporating your hand painting with stamping would be awesome to see 😀 thank you for keeping us all going and entertained throughout these difficult times 😍🥰

    Been stamping over 12yrs and there is definitely a knack. As others have commented plate needs cleaning with acetone. A flatter light clean scrape (this is the knack bit). Then there’s the stamper - sticky stampers are easier (clear jelly stampers aren’t that sticky). I too started with the solid silicone ones, which was tricky for placement (couldn’t do a overlay without loosing your marbles) BUT because they weren’t clear you’d buff and prime them with acetone (which you wouldn’t do now or you’ll loose the clarity of the stamper). Then speed defo plays a part. So all in all I wouldn’t be so hard on yourself because ya did a cracking job!

  • @rhiannongreen3279
    @rhiannongreen3279 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You do have to clean the stamping plate between each stamp because it does dry in the crevasses. Also when you slide the card across, hold it flatter. Think of it like you are trying to press the polish into it. If you hold it too close to a 90 degrees it actually pulls the polish back out of the design a little. And the last thing is after you top coat the nails, buff them, then do the stamping, then top coat again after. They turned out beautiful. i like that you didn't edit and you let us see the trial and errors because thats just really how it is. Thank you for sharing!

    💗You did great considering you have never stamped with a clear stamper before! It’s a complete different technique!
    I’d love to spend a bit of time and teach you the techniques my friend! For example, when you were trying to lift the multi colored skull outline…. Your hand was heavy! You’ve gotta move quickly, and with a very light roll over top!! No pressing down! Hmmmmm…. Maybe a trip to the UK and a collab video are in order? ;)

    It's not you! I also thought it was me. Or the stamper, or the design,or the plate or the stamping polish.But no...It's the nail stamping itself!It came to kill our confidence,feast on our insecurities and make us feel that we are not good enough for it...😈😂Seriously though every time I try I run into the same issues at the beggining but after a couple failed attempts the nail stamping demons start to cooperate and I finally get the design I want😅You are great Kirsty and I've learned a lot of your videos, thank you!💞😚

    Here are some hints from an old timer that stamped with marshmallow (non see-through) stampers. Light touch scrape.. lighter touch on the clear stamper... firm press onto the nail. I worked with (fought with) a clear stamer for hours the first time. Lol

    Are there floral patterns on that plate? It'd be cool to add flowers overlapping the design or in the background. Still a cute and colorful way of stamping. You definitely have more patience than I do!!

  • @haylzc827
    @haylzc827 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Adding freehand flowers to this design on a couple of nails would have possibly added that something more to this design that's what I probably would have done.
    Things I learnt while stamping that have probably already been mentioned:-
    -Clean the plate after every use with acetone. You pretty much want to dehydrate the plate as well as clean it.
    -each design is different the etch may be shallower or deeper so work REALLY quick with the stubborn designs and always blob on the polish. More detailed design are renowned to be harder to pick up.
    - clean off the scrapper after every use as well as the dry polish can drag the wet polish out the design on the plate and cause it to not transfer enough. I just wipe the wet polish off the scraper on a paper towel after I've scraped then clean off the residue after each completed design.
    -I found changing from a roll pick up to a flick pick up was useful when I struggled so a flick of the wrist instead of a slow roll for stubborn designs. Sometimes all they need is a light contact with the wet polish to pick it up.
    I'm no expert but spent alot of time like you did in this video trying to pick up designs when I first started stamping lol. I found there was not one quick fix tip but a combo of many in different combinations depending on the design. Xx

    So the best tip i can give you, would be to send it over to me. Lol. I love stamping!! Love the design. But it is trial and error and even the most experienced stamper will have the same issues you had from time to time. You do need to be quick. And the first time you use a new stamper you should wash it with warm soapy water and make sure it is dry. Clean your plates with 100% acetone. And work fast!

    I’m sorry that you were having trouble, but it makes me feel better that I’m not the only one that has trouble with stamping at times.. I love how Adam is trying to help Kirsty.. Definitely 100% acetone will clean the stamping plates better. Try not to scrape to ruff on the plate.

    Happy new year y'all, have a great trip to Mexico you two. The only thing I can tell you about stamping polish is it's made completely different, so it dries super quickly. Have a couple of friends who are nail techs they use run of the mill polish, or paints (acrylic) says works like a dream. You do have to be uber fast though, some plates the angle you scrape matters too. I know that's not super helpful, but all I know and my free hand painting is better because if you so thanks for all you do on your channel.

    First I’d like to say happy new year and I hope use all had a fantastic Christmas to I’m loving these designs I’m so glad u showed me that stamping is not as easy as it looks 😂 because when I’ve watched videos of stamping being done it’s always looked so easy but having said that the more u done the better it worked I’ve not yet been able to try stamping unfortunately can’t afford all the products if u know longer will be doing it I’d be happy to have your stamping set to learn giggling 🤭 sorry if don’t ask ha ha but there beautiful so don’t beat yourself up lot’s love hugs kisses from just nobody me 🥰🥰🥰 ps I’ve just been watching a she modern video what the lady was saying for best results when u open your plate taking off that blue layer u should clean plate first with acton bad spelling 😂 but anyway clean them first before use then when stamping be more gentle with the stamper and scrap more gently and roll hopefully this helps sorry if not I tried helping xxxx

    You have to prep your rubber stamper with a mr clean sponge first. And if you clean your plate off with acetone the paint come off better. I have this stamping system it works great. Also get the outshine top coat cure for only 10 seconds and the transfer comes off instantly.

    From my understanding I was always taught to only scrape once, maybe the time it’s taking to do more than one scrape is causing it to dry 🤔 or maybe I have no actual idea 😂😂 either way love your videos and bettering my skills as a nail tech to them ❤️

    @singinme103 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can also use the scraper to lift off areas from the stamper that you don’t want to transfer to the nail. It’s less fiddly for me to do that than try to get a page of the sticky paper.

    Hey kristy, u need to PRIME the jelly stamper! They have lots of videos to watch on u tube. ¹st wash jelly stamper in dawn dish soap to remove oils, ²nd lighty buff the entire surface of the jelly stamper with 240 grit file to ruff up the surface, ³rd take cotton swab soaked in acetone and rub on the surface of the jelly stamper this helps to remove the shiny layer on the stamper. U only do these steps the one time when u get a new stamper. After priming going forward u clean surface of stamper with something tacky, don't use acetone again its only for the first time. Try these steps and ull be a pro. This works, I struggled with stamping until I tried these steps. Love ur channel!

    • @k3ri
      @k3ri 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lint roller works well too, has a tacky layer a handle so easy to grab instead of the sticky sheets

    • @noneya1691
      @noneya1691 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't wash my jelly stampers with anything at any time and I would never scuff them up with a file as it blurs it and makes stamping more difficult to place. For the same reason I would never, ever wipe it with acetone. Just the part about rubbing will scratch the surface. I use only a lint roller or masking tape (the tape is less expensive) and my stampers last a long time. As someone else has said, buff the shine off the nail before stamping. I'm sure your way works well but I don't like buying new stampers all the time. All of this is a mute point if you are not using clear stampers.

      I have never seen clear jelly stamper suggest this with their stampers. With some others yes you have to do all of that, but never from clear jelly stamper so I would make sure your following what the brand suggests.

    Taliasnailtales has good videos. All she uses is this stamper. Also when you roll you don’t have to press hard, just flick your wrist quickly through. You can clean plates with acetone, also you have to apply the polish quick, don’t worry about putting caps on. I’m still learning to use the stamper so these are some things I’ve noticed.

    Not sure if I missed the a video done on this already, but seeing the skulls, I would love to see you do a nail art design of your own skull logo on a set of nails. I think you could have freehand painted a skull faster compared to all the time spent on the struggles with the stamper. I have used the Clear Jelly Stamper and I have to be in the mood to deal with the mess and frustration lol. I love their designs though.

    Top tips:
    Have everything right there, speed is key. Blob/swipe/pickup quicker you go the better once it’s on the stamper you’ve got time.
    I’ve always stamped into the sticky layer, seems to grab it better
    Wipe plate with acetone make sure it’s totally clean.
    Intricate designs are hardest as it dries so fast so you have to pick up quicker. I always have pads with acetone on ready as well to wipe the scraper.
    Wipe between every use
    It’s a good layering technique and good in salon when you have it down as it’s easy to do something quick that hand drawn would take ages. Plus clients think it’s magical haha moyoulondon so lovely plates those are my faves xxx

    If I remember correctly, when Susie did it in Nail Career Education, she layered a lot. So like you would do one color first, then the next, etc. You did 3 at a time, maybe that was the issue? I have no idea as I haven't done it with these paints. I've used cheaper stampers with regular polish (I am not a nail tech, I just love your videos)

  • @rachellewis6422

    The sticky layer can be used for stamping by letting the polish dry on the stamp then roll it over the sticky layer. Dry polish will not stick to the skin, just the sticky layer.

  • @marycarnival

    They DO look like stickers...and I like that! This set turned out so cute! I think I'm a pretty dab hand at stamping, but still get voids or bad pick up's sometimes. It looks to me like maybe you could use a lighter touch overall when scraping and picking up. Sometimes the roll is good, but sometimes just a slight rock is what you need. Or just like, kiss the plate with the stamper. Also, I like to use satin cello tape (like for gift wrapping) to clean my stamper and pure acetone to clean the plate. Even a tiny film of polish residue on the plate can cause bad pick up's. It does take a bit of fuss and patience. And I'm well jel of the cool set of polishes CJS sent you...I really like their products.
