Until an hour ago I didn't even know this version existed, and it's really impressive, a complete remake using gorgeous lo-fi pixel art, maintaining a lot of the original game but also cutting and reinventing in parts (although I wonder if they really couldn't maintain the jetpack section). Great redesigns of some enemies. Dunno if the best possible version but a damn good one.

It should have been designed as a home console from the start. If they could increase resolution, colors and maybe slap a better music chip on it, that thing would basically be discount Neo-Geo.

Yeah video out would have been good. Well the entire point of the Lynx was that it was a handheld. Exec's kid asked his dad if they could make a handheld game console, so they set about designing it. RJ Mical and Dave Needle must have been there at the time to do technical design, or RJ Mical was there and Dave Needle was a former that was brought in, not sure, but at least they, together or just one of them, had had an idea for an efficient method to do scaling and wanted to implement it in something and found that as their opportunity.

Been getting into Lynx gaming recently. I remember my mates brother who was older and working at the time got a model 1 early 90s. We rinsed California Games, so good. I bought a model 1 probably 10 years ago with a damaged screen intending to repair it, never did. But I tried it recently and it worked apart from a couple of black lines at the bottom. Perfectly playable. Shadow looks awesome, look at that parallax scrolling!
The makers did a surprisingly effective job considering the limited tech they had to work with. You can't hear it here, but the Atari Lynx's speakers has a slight "echo-ish" quality to them, which helped retain some of the "eerie" feeling the original soundtrack had (which would have otherwise been missing from such an altered and compressed soubdtrack). They also used took advantage of the left and right speakers. IIRC, the noises from the ghost enemies in particular would fade in from the left speaker and fade out from the right speaker as they moved across the screen. It was smart sound design for a version of the game that any other dev probably would have half-assed.
This system was beautifully designed. I appreciated it early on, got frustrated by the lack of games, but it didn't take me long to come full circle. The originals were bizarre, but SO cool, games like ElectroCop, Kung Food. The arcade ports were usually the best available, and the system itself had the perfect balance of power and comfort in use.
Just finished a run on my Anbernic RG 350, using Handy. So fun to be able to play to play with my old lynx games again (the screen of my lynx is about to die)... Thx dude ! :)
Weird how this and the unfinished SNES version look very similar to each other, with different backgrounds, enemy, and boss designs in some areas from the other versions. This actually looks and sounds pretty good,. And it appears to respond and play well too. It now makes me wonder just how good a properly finished and polished SNES version might have been. :-o
I’ve owned this game since it first came out and I couldn’t get very far. Now that it’s decades later nothing changed. After watching this video I realized I should just put it back in the box and reseal it. I’ll never play it again. It’s too difficult for me.
This is a great version of the game. Graphically the Amiga version is still the greatest of all but I think this version and probably the FM Towns version are the most playable as the controls are so much more responsive than the Amiga, the lynx version also seems a little more fair than some of the other versions.
trust me it was playable (i'm an avarage player). On the other hand, the original version on Amiga was nearly impossible without very high skill (or cheat codes for me )
@@s_t_s4846 I agree! Shadow of the Beast was very hard, but not in an unfair way that makes you feel cheated. Once you get used to the patterns of each enemy, you can pass through each area (relatively) unscathed and it feels like the result of what you've learned and practised, rather than blind luck. Batman Returns on the other hand.....the rule seemed to be "throw as much shit that will fit on the screen at the player and hope theyre lucky enough not to get hit by any of it!"

This is the version I had as a kid. Never got very far mind you, don't think I even did the tree.
The graphics are mindblowing especially for a handheld from 1989.
Play the master system one on gamegear and then we can talk about impressive for a handheld
@@mariowario5945 Why on game Gear? Or do you mean "or game gear"?

Two of the original Amiga team worked on the Lynx and then went onto to do the 3DO chipset.
I played this on my Atari Lynx when i was 8 or 9 years old and i never knew what was happening. Thanks for the nostalgia trip!
Life is not fair. The Lynx should have been a huge hit. Years ahead of its time. The amiga of handhelds.
It was too expensive, too big, the games were way too difficult and it absolutely devoured batteries.

Absolute banger of a soundtrack
Impressive skills! And, apart from difficulty, probably the best version of the game.
Amiga is the best version.

This used to be my all time favourite game on Lynx! What a blast!
Slime world for me was great
This is what the commodore amiga version should have been like
The onec has the much needed gameplay which the oringinal lacked

An amazing conversion, sadly not suited to hand held play and missing the flying section from the Amiga version
Yes, but I found the ending on the Lynx much more satisfying compared to just the splash screen the Amiga gave.

Better than the Amiga version. Btw the other versions look like they've been converted from this.
Smooth texture 2D transformations! Does the Lynx have a dedicated chip for that?
Yes, the lynx has hardware sprite scaling.
