One day, I will be driving around in my camper vlogging and struggling to find a composition, just not as well as you do it. You make it look so easy, the drone shots of you driving are awesome, the effort that goes into one video is much appreciated.
6+ years travelling in our van across as far as Morocco south, Armenia to the east and Poland to the North.. amazing trips and photos I love looking at... The life..❤
I really appreciated the part in this video where you were sitting looking at the scene of the beach, and deconstructing what you were seeing to identify the elements that appealed to you, and which parts didn’t, and how you then composed your shot. Found that interesting analysis.
Thanks a lot. I'm glad to hear that people gat some value from these videos. Sometimes I feel like I'm just running around with a camera and making tea. 😂
It’s reassuring that someone with your skill sometimes struggles with composition, when the view is so beautiful. It’s taken me a long time to appreciate the difference between a great view and a great shot, in fact I’m still working on it.
I think you made an excellent point when you said "the image was Ok, but it's the experience that really counts!. Couldn't agree more Especially having had a similar experience on Harris a few weeks ago myself.
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto That is a shame but I'm sure we'll get to hang out one day! If ever make it down to Dartmoor, give me a shout. Wild camping is still allowed! 🙂
The last image was quite beautiful. Even though it wasn't lit with any beautiful sunset glow, it still had something about it in those blue tones. The clouds really carried it.
Your high production value videos of trips to far off corners of the earth are great, but these simple van trip videos are my favorite because I feel they’re the most useful and relatable.
Hey, really enjoy your videos, long time watcher and supporter, first time commenter (on anything I think!). Thanks so much for making great content, we love it. One and only suggestion I have would be to vary the music a bit more. We enjoy watching but we've noticed that the music specifically is getting quite repetitive (e.g. 21m:30s). Hope you'll take this as constructive mate.👍
You ended up with some very worthwhile images, Thomas. The tones in the grass for that first shot were really very beautiful. I'm a sucker for the fall and winter tones of grass and some weeds. That third (?) shot of the many layers of beach, waves, water, mountains and clouds was a knockout.
Outstanding. This was an outstanding episode. We loved the pacing, the way the story tells itself, just naturally unfolding. We loved the way youhelp us understand why you were choosing or not choosing certain compositions, the filters and settings chosen. All that along with a gorgeous location. We feel we've learned a lot and come away refreshed. Beautifully done.
The black and white pictures are stunning.Full of mystery and atmosphere, thanks for sharing the process and as you said “what a difference a day makes “
3:38 Beautiful Image the video gave no clue to the contrast and depth of colour in the final render 4:38 the beach patterns are almost a reflection of the clouds 15:15 very moody, the waves are almost a negative image of the sky 21:24 beautiful contrast of textures and tone, 23:32 Real but abstract the still sand, the waves, the light (and dark) and the stunning clouds hills, thanks Thomas
Lovely video. Just finished a shakeout tour of our van in the desert Southwest! Lots of blowing sand 😳. Watching your seascape photos is inspiring us to head for the West Coast (US). Thanks! Love you videos!
Hey Thomas, I really like the shots you captured. They are really lovely, peaceful calming shots. For me, there is also an important place for these type of shots. They are not about leading lines, or a story; they are simple, wonderful and tranquil. You feel more relaxed just looking at them🙂
Thomas, Those first shots are so beautiful! What a stunning place. I visited Skye a year or so ago and was absolutely gobsmacked by the beauty of the scenery You've got me hankering for a trip to Harris now! Superb stuff mate 👍
That’s awesome to have park ups with facilities. Wish we (Australia) had that. Hubby & I have just bought a camp trailer so I can get to more locations for photography. We can free camp or pay at caravan parks. Let our fun begin. I enjoyed watching your video and the compositions you created. You’ve got yourself well set up in your van. Hope you got the electrics sorted when you got back home.
I thought I was alone in my annoyance. Glad to know it’s not just me. 😀 😊 My chrome 500 c/m and my black swc/m share film backs, I definitely don’t like the mismatch. BUT- the photograph doesn’t care about this small detail. 🤗 Cheers from NYC.
Hey, that’s where I was born and brought up! Hope you have fun. Make sure you get around to Dalbeg and Dalmore beaches at Carloway. Some nice wee secret coves over by Valtos are nice too. If you can persuade someone to take you out to the lagoon in the middle of pabaigh mor that’s pretty special. Have fun! Omer
great video Tom, you literally drove past where I am staying at luskentyre. I have hit a bit of a wall creatively having been here 2 weeks now but your latest vid has inspired me to get back out and just enjoy the moment regardless of the final outcome ! looking forward to next week.
Hi Tom, Nice images , that's a great location. I do like your painterly effects. I am a real fan of the clouds. Here in Maine we get some really great sky's. So keep up the good work, see you next time.
Aside from the beauty of the place it is so intriguing to see the scattered buildings/homes in the background. Imagine watching nature go by from your front drive.
Johny, I am only now figuring out how to filter and see these Thanks, so thank you for the donation. I genuinely appreciate it. Sorry for my late reply!
The black and white dawn beach image at 15:16 was lovely. Like you, I've found myself in that trap of using a bit of seaweed for foreground interest, but then when I've got home I've realised the error of my ways. Chuffed to nuts you got your electrical problems sorted out. If the plug is a point of weakness then it might be worth having a complete made up spare stored away just in case... All the best Tom
Thanks a lot for your comment. Yes, the plug is vulnerable. I need to stop the battery sliding forward when I break hard. It puts pressure on the plug. I'll get it sorted 👍
Cracking video of our second favourite island (the first being Shetland). We are back in Harris in June and staying in a house that overlooks Luskentyre.
Loves these type of videos. Looks like a lot of fun & a great experience. Getting into photography, for the first time in my life I wish I could drive.
Great video! And that last shot was really nice too. I think I prefer it to a dramatic sunset honestly, because I e seen those before. Many times. Of course they are very fun to shoot and I would be hoping for one myself in that situation.
Ah, love Harris ❤ That brought back some memories. Have been there in my campervan a couple of times and stayed in one of those park ups along the road to Luskentyre beach 🙂
You made the best of the conditions Thomas and shared a set of beautiful images. I especially loved the first square mono. Glad to hear your temporary fix for your electrics done the trick as well
Wouldnt have thought running shoes were on ya mind that early 😬. Fab video Tom, you're back at ya best, Yay! This was vintage Heaton!, ( I'm 73, I like vintage), As a Canon 'fan boy' I'm a bit disappointed you've gone over to the (nikon) dark side but....I wont hold that against you. Cheers buddy.
No joke about the crowds - we were in Edinburgh and Glencoe for Easter weekend and it was PACKED! I can definitely sympathize about your park-up plight. :-)
Hi thomas just completed harris my self i leave tommorrow for north uist working my way down it would of been good to cross paths and meet. Managed to get lots of images my self even a cheeky 2am aurora shot last night as well. All the best JJ
the weather when i went in the summer(10 years agao) was awful, but so beautiful I want to return. The trouble is Scotland is just so epic and so many amazing places to visit I am not sure when I will get the chance.
Great post, Thomas. You genuinely look like you enjoy producing these videos, and you are darned good at it! Dare I say you have even gotten better with each year, like a fine wine 😊
Nice video with some good advice on composition. Love that part of the world. I am going to some of those islands in the Fall. Sadly not as a photographer but as a tourist. I am taking my non photographer wife so we are going a different way, but looking forward to see the landscape. Good work, my friend.
Fantastic video as usual Thomas! I was trying to think of where to shoot & film next and I think you've inspired me for an Islands of the Highlands type mission! Did a photo & van trip to Torridon & the 'Gorms earlier this year which was flippin' brilliant, so time for some more adventures I think! Keep up the good work :)
Nice video, Thomas. I was interested to see you really make artful images from what appeared relatively bland on the film. You really ‘used’ your knowledge. As a painter I often use the knowledge of paint to try and make more than just copying a subject and it’s interesting to see you do this with photography. Lovely work and very watchable video. Thanks.

Me too bruv!!
Thanks a lot. I hope that you do, and I'm sure you'll nail those comps 🎉

@@ThomasHeatonPhoto That is a shame but I'm sure we'll get to hang out one day! If ever make it down to Dartmoor, give me a shout. Wild camping is still allowed! 🙂
There is just something so atmospheric about those black and white compositions.
Thanks a lot. The BW was a very last minute change after looking at my images and thinking they were lacking something. BW made all the difference.
THIS is my kind of Thomas Heaton video!
AHH! Another fantastic weekly breakfast session (Aust Time) with TH, ....Coffee in hand... A great way to start my day. Love the shots Tom!
Thanks a lot. Hope you enjoyed this episode. It was a bit longer than usual.
This is exactly what campervanlife is all about and to be there is a bonus, Loved the shots, they spoke to me
The last image was quite beautiful. Even though it wasn't lit with any beautiful sunset glow, it still had something about it in those blue tones. The clouds really carried it.
Yes, the electricity got fixed :-) .... fast forward, fast forward till next week ! Loved the first shot ... Kind regards, Guy.
I really liked your blue hour photo. The more I looked at the more I appreciated the edges of the direction of the clouds.
Your high production value videos of trips to far off corners of the earth are great, but these simple van trip videos are my favorite because I feel they’re the most useful and relatable.
20:44 your talking head shot looks like a Van Gogh painting or something. Always getting beautiful like when you wake up early.
Loved the depth and sand patterns at 4:45 and, although I always love your B&Ws, this one worked really well in color. Thanks for braving the wind!

Nobody works harder than you and the images were really wonderful. Great job man
The isle of Harris is a 14 hour drive for me, not including the ferry trips. looks so beautiful i have to do it , thx for sharing
That second shot with the black sand pattern was incredible
This shot 4:39 should be a contender for your next calendar. 😍

Thanks a lot Tony, I do appreciate your image by image critique 👍 glad you enjoyed this one.
In addition to Harris providing fantastic minimalist photo opportunities, it’s a delight listening to your commentary on compositions.
Enjoyed the old school vloggin nice shots throughout too.
