Legend! 👏 Saw him live in Berlin and got to meet him after the concert. 😍 He is defently one of the most musicial players around, also a technical visionary and most importantly, so down to earth and polite. ✌ So honored, that I had the opportunity to a have a conversation with one of my gratest idols! 😌 The best. 🙏
this is amazingly comprehensive and thorough. great teaching style. been drumming for like 25+ yrs and have neglected disciplining ghost notes and bass pedal work. it’s always been one of the main distinctions in drumming that amazes and intimidates me. peeps say my playing reminds them of Copeland, which is bonkers and humbling. but i def know that Copeland would mop the floor with me cuz he has that discipline, which i have lacked and am just now taking more seriously. anyway, props for dope vid. stay hydrated. ✌️
I'm not a drummer (wish I was) but love watching drummers at work. Saw Nate for the first time at the Java Jazz Festival 2023 in Jakarta a few weeks go. He blew my mind. Wow. I saw a genius in his element. Am a new fan. Thank you for this video. Wonderful.
I think I just noticed how often you do the finger snap for your transitions back to speaking or whatever you wanna go back to. It's almost a signature of your videos now. Great work on this one!!
I've been a gigging drummer for 30 plus years and Nate is teaching me new tricks.. I can't wait to annoy my bandmates with some off time jackassery a week before our next show.
Dude yep, that last comment is for me. I love your videos cuz I get turned onto new musicians and more lifestyle/day in the life stuff. Not a drummer. Just a musician.
love your snare sound here, can you run me through how you got this sound? (model, heads, how many snares, and tuning batter head relative to snare side head?)
The resbit to time check at the top of the bar is how one resets and stays locked in. Sizzle-snap, ruff to accent. However you get there...let ring with the soloing limb then time check and some predetermined place in the bar(90%of the time it’s on the 1)
I always hate when someone says 'there can only be one!'. Now that's me. And no, I'm a huge fan of both Nate Smiths. You are somewhat unlucky because Vulf Nate's real first name is Ira.
Skip Step: I think everyone has a different approach so counting like that is totally fine but i also recommend singing the bass melody or any melody you hear and feel the pulse of the music. Maybe this guy here looks so uncomfortable while playing because he's always counting.
Speaking of skip, maybe I'm late, been watching since October last year, but when we doin our boy billy Martin? If you been living in around NYC you have seen MMW play, if your lucky on Halloween, but how bout partido alto or Latin 9 song i forget name, yes MMW cmon
HAHAHAHA Omg did I inspire this video???? I love Nate Smith and left a comment that was just "Nate Smith" on the video about whether or not basic drum kits were boring. lol. It's okay if it wasn't me - I'm just gonna pretend it was lol.
And I just put it together you have the same name as Nate Smith - I knew your name was Nate - didn't know you were a Smith. Been a fan for a long time and never knew your last name. lol.
All these "every drummer should know" vids are a bit much, so in total, every drummer should know 2-3-4 or 5 of every great drummers beats! Drummers should be making their own beats how's that! They should also be making their own music, I don't know who you all think is going to be calling you and the expectation that an audition to play with other people is going to result in anything other than sitting in with others making their own music. Do your own auditions of musicians who might want to play the music you create together.
I think you may be taking the title of these videos a bit too literally, my dude. It's more in the spirit of "look at these examples of skilled drummers, learn from what they are doing and incorporate it into your own playing", in my opinion. Of course, I may be wrong, but that's my take on these "must know/should know/got to see" type of videos.
Nate Smith does beat every drummer you should know

Rambo is pretty essential. And I love how he plays Retold in that Zildjian live performance, with those perfectly timed cymbal chokes.
I really like the fact that you have been recording on this new space, with everything mic'ed up. Congrats!

I don't want to appear as obsequious but bro you literally are my favourite Nate Smith ❤
Terrific video. Definitely one of those "You have to be this tall to ride this ride." though. :D
Ace of Aces..Great Beat not to many drummers can duplicate..
Both Nate's are Pro's thanks for sharing
idk man how's never might have one of the coolest rhythms ever !!!!

Not a singular or signature beat but I think that Streetlamp is some of Nate's classiest playing
Thanks Nate great video
Great lesson!
Damn those drums sound great
Hey man, awesome video, I love Nat Smith.
Could you tell me what hi-hats you play? They sound awesome
Love that you’re covering Nate. Can you break down Makaya McCraven? Specifically High Fives from In These Times.
love your snare sound here, can you run me through how you got this sound? (model, heads, how many snares, and tuning batter head relative to snare side head?)
Nate Smith on Nate Smith!
Face contortions are funny my wife always makes me laugh while I'm playing as I tend to make funny face as I drum lol . Anyhow awesome video N
🎼 Great drum channel!
How did you not include any beats from the pocket change album??????????
:05
My response to that is!
“80/20 drummer you we know him, we love him”
Love it!
Dynamite! Aka “raz-a-ma-taz” ❤. I know it’s corny but I hear that every they play the end of the line.
Mmmm that snare!
HOLY 55 BAR BATMAN!!
I'm a bass player who likes to program beats so this is gold for me. May i suggest 5 beats for Makaya McCraven and Yussef Dayes. Love those guys.
Search my name and yussef dayes
Amazing.
yes.
How you have less than 100K subs is beyond Smooth Criminal hat tip Sugar-foot Moffat

this is word salad, but luckily I love salad
@@ThomasistheTwin I also generally allow the soiling limb to ring, though there are times when I'll choke that soil right TF out.
Hey man. Just wondering, do you box?
No. Trained a little the summer of 2020. Why
@@8020drummer just got the vibe ✨ feel like the drumming coordination helps. Been picking it up myself!
Thank you for the vidéo 🤩
PS: the voice is a bit loud in the mikx 😉
For Skip Step, I think 4+4+4+5 makes the most sense.
Hmmm wouldn't it rather be 4/4 + 3/4 + 3/8?
@@villygroenklausen9365 Why not just 4/4 + 9/8?
The other way I feel it is slow 7/2, with a bar of quick 3/4 at the end
I sent $5 and got pdfs and sound files BUT no instructions on their employment. Please - I need contact/input here. Thanks.

There isn't a Nate Smith beat that shouldn't be known.
I always hate when someone says 'there can only be one!'. Now that's me. And no, I'm a huge fan of both Nate Smiths. You are somewhat unlucky because Vulf Nate's real first name is Ira.
Doesn’t that make me lucky because my real first name is nate? 😜
@@8020drummer hahaha, my phrasing needs woodshedding for linguistics and drums.
Please do Rambo…
Please send written beats.
Thanks

White rage
10:10 ... Nate keeps playing sixteenths, even during the open hat parts. No respite.
420th like!

Now I can’t tell which Nate Smith is which Nate Smith…again!
third beat is raunchy
there's no categorical reason any drummer should know another drummers material

I feel the same way about language. Instead of studying the great writers and speakers, I just make up nonsense words.
