Thank you for the explanation. Clave is sexy and provocative. And lots of history in its development.
As a dancer/musician, I learned that the cuban musicians played to the dancers vs in western style, the dancer danced to the music.
Dancing on one, two, and clave(s) had very different feels. And dancing the male and female roles as a teacher was a great learning experience.

I really like your presentation of very valuable information. Your editing is very nice and really supports the delivery of the information.
I'm not sure if I trained myself out of hearing music when I first started dancing in order to be in time with my partner rather than the music but there are definitely pieces of music that I have a very hard time listening to and sometimes I find that I am not even noticing the music.

Brilliant video and essential viewing but there is another level of complexity that must be understood so as to determine whether clave is 2-3, or 3-2, and dance within that timing. The montuno which is generated by the keys, and sometimes guitar has two different structures depending upon the clave style. This can be complex to explain, and maybe boring to most but the simplest way to use the montuno to determine clave is whether the first beat of the 8 beat montuno phrase falls on the one, or has been syncopated from the previous phrase and is on the 8 1/2. Pre empting the one. Correspondingly the 5 beat, if the first beat has been struck directly on the one, then the 5th beat begins at 4 1/2 which pre empts the beat with that syncopation. Understanding the Montuno, the clave, the congas is the secret to finding the 'one' and if you dance Contriatempo, the two or six. Also, another element ignored is that the music is built, engineered on phrases of 8 beats and so are dance patterns. That is why it is so important to get both music and dance patterns into alignment or else it becomes a dog's breakfast and not much fun. Steven, thanks for being brave and covering this subject as I have plenty of blowback when I try and simply explain this to my salsa students. 6 years of being the keyboard player (Mr Montuno) in a Cuban dance band turned the rhythm lights on for me.

Conga could differ where it comes from depends on who you ask. But The word conga came from the rhythm la conga which is used to play from this instrument. So I believe the name came after the instrument.

    Great video!
I think in today cuban music the clave is most of the time unnoticeable though so most of the time I focus on the Conga and the cowbell

There's a lot of tools that I find more immediately useful than clave for sure, but like I say, if you don't start with clave, people will attack 🤣

Thanks for this awesome explanation. No one could but it better! I always have struggled to find the one in the music, so I used to just smooth my steps with the rhythm.
In my salsa journey I find people dance on different counts like on 1, 2 or 3 and others even on different counts. What is your in put on that?
For me I find Cuban music is more creative and complicated than any other music around the world. So I would rather dance the story of the song than just the beat.
