How is this allowed? It’s clearly copyright infringement of the original Broadway musical. Like it’s someone else’s IP. It would one thing to do one song but you are doing many songs from the original show and similar staging and choreography like how is this allowed?
Hi, so as someone who used to be in this group, I can kinda clear this up. So every choir has to have a license to use any and every song used in a show. This is of course to not be infringed by said copyright law. I also believe that all the music is payed for before the choirs can use it, so another way of using these songs. The choreography is all done by a hired choreographer, and with this sort of show I can see why there might be some inspiration from the original broadway show. But don’t be fooled, all of it is done by the choreographer. While it looks similar, it is definitely not the same. I can see where the misconception was, but there’s a lot of stuff that directors must do in order to compete, especially with the music choirs use. I can also tell you that if there were any issues with music licensing, the song would not be used. I’ve seen groups have to change an entire song a week before a competition just because last minute they found out that the choir didn’t have a license for it. I hope that clears some things up. I also was a student preforming, so this is what is to the best of my knowledge.
Everyone sprinting to watch this legendary show
God I love this show so much
Upset they don’t add covers of these songs to add to my playlist.
