I just purchased the 4TB model of this drive (which is identical to the 8TB model) and after getting confused by setup info on the WD website I ran across your video. I found your video to be VERY helpful to a novice setting up this device on a desktop PC. Thanks! (Also the auto-backup feature works perfectly and does exactly what I want it to do.)

Perfect. Thank God for guys like Ken. This video was exactly what I needed as there are no instructions in the box and I missed that the little set up files in "Documents." The phone rang and I was distracted.... Naturally, I went to "support" to get set up instructions and the link is there. But.... the link doesn't work. It merely gives an error message "server error." This being the case, Northern Viking's video saved the day, as WD support doesn't work weekends. I guess us customers aren't supposed to need support on weekends... :-))) two variations from Ken's excellent overview that I experienced setting up my HP Windows 10 desktop: 1) the little brochure that's in the box doesn't have any instructions. It's just legalese and some warranty info. Basically, a useless addition. 2) There was no way to set up a password when I went into Mybook-Apps menu and clicked on the set-up star. Just wasn't there.
Excellent video! After owning the 3TB 1230 book it finally died on me unexpectedly. 2500 hundred movies gone. I'm so heart broken over the time I spent saving them on that drive. And I didn't back them up either

WD 3,5 8TB My Book 1. I made it password protected. After removing and inserting the disk, the disk does not appear on my computer. When I installed the old 4TB 2.5 it showed up as "CD Drive UDF". Is WD Security software required for the password? 2. A clicking sound is heard continuously at 5.6 seconds while the disc is running. Is the disk normal or problematic, I'm waiting for your help.

I noticed on the back of these orange box My Book drives that it doesn't show Windows 7 on the compatibility. Does that mean it won't work at all on Windows 7 PC's? I noticed the boxes that are green and white says Windows 7 on them.
I purchased an 8TB Easy Store desktop backup Plug and Play, everything looks same as the My Book. When installing the Windows application of the Discovery program I had another program running at the same time, then Discovery stalled out at "installing 18%". So I closed everything else, now It has been an hour and there is no button on screen to cancel. I am not confident about turning off the computer in the middle of the install. My question is, will there be a problem with the computer booting up or the Easy Store booting up next time I try again? How do I stop the installation and restart it?
Can the drive be normally used without installing the WD software? I don't want any automatic backup functions to mess with my files. I prefer to backup my stuff manually.
I bought two 18TB drives, one worked absolutely fine but with the second one is giving speed issue. After using 2TB, today the write speed dropped from 200 to 100MB/s...I tried transfering data on 3 different machines but same result. Any clue? P.S Using Sandisk Extreme SSD to transfer data..so no bottleneck.

I did my file transfer and I noticed that my 3.5TBs of stuff is on the HDD as 5.7 or something foolish, but it was transferred from another HDD, so I don't understand why this is a thing. With USB 2.0 yes. But with USB 3.0 you'll get up 600mbps with any hdd maybe at maximum but with Wd hdd 800 mbps. I was moving files earlier between hdds and with the Wd hdd I was getting up 820mbps I saw at one point. That's almost 1gb per second.
Random question for anyone knowledgeable, but does anyone know if this works for laptops? I'm not too big of a tech guy and I've only had my first laptop for about a year. It is an Asus Rog Strix if that helps at all. I just don't know what is compatible with which of the parts with this My Book line. I have one of these My Book's at my store, and it'd really help with some storage issues, but I don't want to just buy it for a funky price, only for it not to work. But yeah I've even thought about getting the storage expansion. But also moving games between ssd's isn't that much of an issue. They move up to 2.7 GBps . So even a 150 GB game will only take like 10 mins at most probably to move lol But the ideal size for game storage is probably anything above 4tb of storage. I have an xbox one original which is what has my wd my book hdd and it is basically almost full, theres barely 1.1 tbs left free. But that's 101 games i think lol

I bought me My Book 2TB External Drive and i added a password, and i have an issue and i don't' know if it's suppose to do this but sometimes when i log into my desktop i go to File Explorer and next to my Windows (C:) it shows My Book Drive and when i click on the drive it opens even though i didn't put the password in to Unlock it, and i clicked on my Folders inside and I can see my wallpaper icons and Videos in the folders but i just can't play the videos or view wallpapers without putting in the password. How do i fix this issue so the next time i turn on my desktop it Won't show My Book Drive next to my Windows (C:), and for me to not have access to the drive until I put in the password for it. Anyone had this issue before?

Internal hard drive will always be faster.
Long term storage use either internal or external or both together so have two backup copies.

I don't use the software with mine, I just drag and drop the files into the drive. The software helps you do things like automatic backups etc...

Probably not on it's own. It does have an auto on and off feature so if attached to a device that's possible of that, then yeah.

Could be normal, it does have moving parts inside. Just don't bang it or move it much when on.

Not out of the box. But combined with your PC, you may be able to do a remote desktop or some other kind of setup to accomplish this.

It should work as an external drive but not an internal drive for the PS4.

Yes, but some games won't play off the drive but it will store any game once formatted.
