This is one of my favorite movies ever. So many references to other films, so well written and directed to work as a comedy, a horror film, a romance and a drama...it even has great musical numbers like the Queen zombie attack. It's tough to make a movie with non-stop laughs that is also scary and tense and creates deep emotional investment in the characters. Great acting, great characters that are developed and grow and change in realistic ways in surreal situations, what a masterpiece!
I absolutely love this film , all the intertwining moments from the beginning to the end. This is one of the few movies that absolutely gets better and better with each rewatch. You pick up on so many more things. This movie is so dense, with layer upon layer of reference, plot and gags, that it is really easy to miss upon first watch. There are lots of line and joke call-backs, like the video game Ed plays at the beginning mirrors Shawn shooting Zombies at the bar later. It's definitely worth owning on DVD or Blu-ray, because there are fact tracks that point them all out. Your reaction to this was fantastic, and I really enjoyed it.
I must have watched this film over a dozen times, and watching this reaction is the first time I noticed the girl on the checkout at the start is the girl who shows up in their garden. It's all the little things.
I feel like Cornetto trilogy hits differently at different ages. Shaun of the Dead is great if you're in your 20s, when you are at that age where you're an adult but you're not sure what to make of your life yet. Hot Fuzz is about being in your 30s, where you made your choices but you are wondering if you missed out on anything. The World's End is when you're in your 40s, when you are set on your path and you wonder if your best days are behind you.
Ames, as a companion to the Cornetto Trilogy, I highly recommend the short comedy series that started Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright's careers... "Spaced." It has a similar vibe to "Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz," and "The World's End." Some of the same actors show up in the TV show as well.
6:25 That is Jessica Hynes, a woman Simon made an awesome TV sitcom with from 1999-2001 called Spaced. I'd highly recommend it, it's very quirky, hilarious, and has all his signature tropes. If you're into slacker or stoner type shows you'll love it and a few streaming sites have it.
I love the fact that this whole movie came into being from an episode of 'Spaced', where Simon Pegg's character played Resident Evil high on speed and hallucinates a zombie invasion. It also starred Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and was directed by Edgar Wright. The front of Shaun's house is even the same.
The houses are nothing like the same. Shaun's house was a pretty typical Edwardian semi-detached house. Tim and Daisy's house was a very distinctive gothic style detached house.
39:46 In spite of playing someone everyone wanted to see torn apart by zombies, Dylan Moran is a hilarious standup comedian. He was also really funny in Run Fatboy Run with Simon Pegg, Thandiwe Newton, and Hank Azaria.
I still remember watching this as a kid for the first time! I loved the scene where he walked to the drugstore and the next day did it again and was completely oblivious to all the dead bodies ☠️🤣🍿🥤
Shaun: "We can't stay here, its not exactly safe is it?" *gestures to the broken window* Ed: "I know, look at the state of it" *Looks around at all the cleaning up he didn't do* 😂😂😂
The grandfather of the zombie movie genre George A Romero loved this homage to his films so much that he gave Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright cameos as zombies in his 2005 movie Land of the Dead.
Great reaction Ames like always, love this movie! The plan that Ed comes up with at the Winchester after Shaun gets dumped by Liz is actually a beat-for-beat summary of all the events that will go down the following day: "Have a Bloody Mary's first thing (the first zombie they encounter is named Mary), a bite at the King's Head (Phillip gets bitten in the neck), couple at the Little Princess (Liz is the princess, David and Di are the couple), stagger back here (they pretend to be zombies); bang! Back at the bar for shots (the big shootout in the third act). Watching Edgar Wright's films multiple times is pretty much a necessity due to the sheer amount of foreshadowing and hidden hints he hides in the script. And the movie never actually reveals the cause of the zombie outbreak. Just as the news reporter is about to say it at the end, Shaun changes the channel, thus leaving it a mystery to the audience. And another fun-fact: Zombie godfather himself George A. Romero loved the film so much that gave Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright cameos as zombies in his 2005 film Land of the Dead. Shaun of the Dead remains the first of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg’s “Cornetto Trilogy”. This was based on Cornetto ice cream, which came in three flavors or colors: red, blue, and green. Shaun of the Dead represents red (blood), Hot Fuzz represents blue (police), and The World’s End represents green (aliens). Keep up the good work.
This is a huge love letter to George Romero's original DEAD trilogy. George created the modern zombie movie, and there are so many little references Romero here... music cues, character names, dialogue bits .. like "Were coming to get you Barbara" which is paraphrasing one of the first lines in Night of the Living Dead (1968). Edgar Wright showed this movie to George before anyone else. And he loved it so much he had the 2 leads from this cameo in his 4th zombie film Land of the Dead.
The thing is that Sean's stepdad did tell Sean this all the time while Sean was growing up, but Sean couldn't hear it, because he couldn't get past the death of his father. He hated his stepdad for marrying his mom, because it was like proving forever that Dad would never return. Sean's stepfather was a good man who tried his best to do well by Sean and his mother. In the end it took his death for Sean to realize this, probably just like it took the death of his father to realize his father had loved him too. (Sean is a bit of an irresponsible child in case you missed it).
Now that you watched Shaun of the Dead, you should watch Hot Fuzz and the World’s End next. They are the other two entries of the Three Flavored Cornetto trilogy starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. You should also watch and react to Paul. It another buddy comedy with Simon and Nick!!!
"We're coming to get you, Barbara!" I've seen this so many times, but only just noticed that the checkout girl during the intro song, Mary, is actually the first Zombie they encounter! Anywee, "Hot Fuzz" next!
There are three in the series by Edgar Wright and these two. You need to check out Hot Fuzz next then I think it's called At Worlds End but I truly forget the name of the 3rd one :)
"Even undead, you still have to work" - yeah, you definitely understand zombies in storytelling. This, right here, hits at the horror in the roots of zombie/zombi stories that part of the fear was the idea of eternal slavery without even the promise of rest in death - kind of amazing that it crept in as part of a gag montage in the epilogue, and the fact that the "mobile deceased" employment/enslavement industry subtly mirrors the way people hand-wave being complicit in systems of oppression on the basis that they didn't set up those systems personally ("Hey, we didn't cause the zombie outbreak" "Hey I've never enslaved anyone")...pretty great satire, intended or not
Duuuuuuude, thank you for this! I am on my day off and I have like 5 hours till my simrace starts and im bored and stoned lol this could not be more perfect timing 🙌🤓🤩
Fun fact: Shaun's housemate is played by Peter Serafinowicz, who voiced Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace. For any gamers out there, he also voiced Pate in Dark Souls 2.
I see you have a Star Wars Return of the Jedi poster in the background. I met Warwick Davis last weekend in Nashville TN at a Star Wars convention. He was so kind and very funny person. I met Dermot Crowley who plays General Madine in RTOTJ. I was his first person to meet. He said I have a gift for you. He handed me an original script page of Revenge of The Jedi. I was in shock. He was such a cool person. I met other Star Wars actors but it be too much to type who else was there
Warwick Davis occasionally shows up in our town, visiting friends. I saw him in the supermarket once and every single time I saw him, he was talking to someone, customer or staff. It must have taken him ages to get round and do his bit of shopping, but he never fobbed anyone off; everyone who wanted to chat got some of his time. Class act.
When the roomate is yelling at Ed early in the film he says if you want to live like an animal why don't you go live in the shed. Which is what he does after turning into a Zombie. I love all the little call backs in this film.
Fun review Ames, thanks. I needed this tonight. The look on your face when they were tearing that guy's guts out was priceless, I could tell you loved it lol I look forward to seeing you watch the rest of the trilogy - Hot Fuzz, and the World's End (my absolute favourite). Same actors in each movie, you'll love it.
There are so many hidden easter eggs all throughout this movie. Im sure someone has gone over how Ed breaks down the entire story in the bar (Mary, bite at king's head, couple at princesses, etc) but there is so much more. at 26:51 When you say "That guy!" That is "Snake Hips" as described by Ed earlier. "Always surrounded by women". Amd of course When you see him again he's surrounded by women...zombies. mostly at his hips. The video game at the beginning of the movie is a zombie shoot em up game and the dialogue used by Ed and Sean is repeated verbatim when they are in the bar shooting actual zombies, complete with same rifle movements they used in the game earlier. I could go on and on with more details but you get the idea. Doing a deep dive into this movie is very fun and interesting to see all the little intricacies
Solid choice, excellent movie, Edgar, Nick and Simon are brilliant. Dylan Moran, etc as well. Martin Freeman and Bill Nighy and Peter Serafinowicz and Rafe Spall also. This movie has tons of references and easter eggs and other than the transitions, a lot of clever dialog and foreshadowing.
This film was expanded from a short scene in "Spaced" also with the same production crew and cast. In fact 'Spaced' is very much the same style as this film and I highly recommend it.
You've got red on you. 4:07 First nice insert, Ash being the hero in The Evil Dead. Apparently Ed's dealer is actually Shaun's mouthy colleague but they never actually reference it 43:21 She's Simon Pegg's flatmate in Spaced, the comedy series where they originally had the idea for this movie (from one of the episodes), definitely recommended watch, Edgar Wright directed that too. You should definitely watch the other two in the Cornetto Trilogy, Hot Fuzz and World's End (so called because they have a Cornetto ice cream, different flavours, in each movie)
This was my go to for the year of a movie. The jingle those 2 were doing was just histarical, with the zombie apocalypse. Those 2 were as good as Abbot & Costello, or Chris Tucker & Jackie Chan combo... Another is Hugh Jackman & Ryan Reynolds... Combos like this in Sean of the dead are just amazing...
As a huge fan of zombie movies, and someone who has seen this, and night of the living dead dozens of times over the years... I am ashamed too admit that I missed the "We are coming to get you Barbara" reference for about a decade.
Love Shaun of the Dead, but Hot Fuzz has my heart in the trilogy, but this is great for horror month and a classic horror/comedy. Both guy are in that one too. It's an action/comedy/thriller?
I can't be mad at Shaun for not noticing because I wouldn't either, although in my defence where I live it is always trashed and there is always drunk people staggering about, so it will just look the same , love the reaction and can't wait to watch more of your videos 👍

@@watts18269 its fate! 🙌🙌🙌🙌🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Driving while stoned. Real responsible.
@@superthrustjon Your mom is responsible
@@superthrustjon i crashed tonight. Do you have bail by chance? 😬
I've heard that Edgar Wright says Diane was found later on, up a tree, still holding one of David's legs.
I believe this bit of story showed up as a storyboard on the extra features of the DVD.
David is played by Dylan Moran, who is a really funny comedian and had a great sitcom, Black Books.
Fun fact: Shaun's housemate is played by Peter Serafinowicz, who voiced Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace.
For any gamers out there, he also voiced Pate in Dark Souls 2.
He’s been in a lot of stuff. Paris and rec, South Park, The Simpsons, Rick and Morty, Archer, American Dad…well pretty much every cartoon ever made.
The clue were edd would end up was when pete said to edd "you want to live like a animal? Then go live in the shed" 😂
If you don't like "Hot Fuzz" and "Shaun of the Dead", there is something wrong with you.
Don't forget that the world's end was the final of that 'cornetto ' trillogy!
fun fact: Ed spells out what will happen in the movie at the start, when him & shaun get drunk.
The roommate adds a tidbit
Such a gem I’ve seen this tons of times and it’s still hilarious
Class act.
@@Murdo2112 nice
When the roomate is yelling at Ed early in the film he says if you want to live like an animal why don't you go live in the shed. Which is what he does after turning into a Zombie. I love all the little call backs in this film.
Fun review Ames, thanks. I needed this tonight. The look on your face when they were tearing that guy's guts out was priceless, I could tell you loved it lol
I look forward to seeing you watch the rest of the trilogy - Hot Fuzz, and the World's End (my absolute favourite). Same actors in each movie, you'll love it.
I did NOT call Diane a failed actress!
Skips David completely.. 😀
Omg, Ames gonna watch the Cornetto trilogy? Her Hot Fuzz reaction will be epic!
This awesome reactor has finally collided with Shaun of the Dead and all is right with the universe.
I watched this a lot when I was deployed. It always cheers me up. Such good writing and editing. ❤❤❤❤
This film was expanded from a short scene in "Spaced" also with the same production crew and cast. In fact 'Spaced' is very much the same style as this film and I highly recommend it.
This movie came out in United Kingdom in April 2004
You've got red on you.
4:07 First nice insert, Ash being the hero in The Evil Dead.
Apparently Ed's dealer is actually Shaun's mouthy colleague but they never actually reference it
43:21 She's Simon Pegg's flatmate in Spaced, the comedy series where they originally had the idea for this movie (from one of the episodes), definitely recommended watch, Edgar Wright directed that too.
You should definitely watch the other two in the Cornetto Trilogy, Hot Fuzz and World's End (so called because they have a Cornetto ice cream, different flavours, in each movie)
44:50 "Best friends playin' his... video _game."_
Best friends to the end. 🤷♂
"We're coming to get you, Barbara " is an homage to the Original "Night of the living dead"
Hey boyy 😂 thanks for the awesome reaction 👏
This was my go to for the year of a movie. The jingle those 2 were doing was just histarical, with the zombie apocalypse. Those 2 were as good as Abbot & Costello, or Chris Tucker & Jackie Chan combo... Another is Hugh Jackman & Ryan Reynolds... Combos like this in Sean of the dead are just amazing...
As a huge fan of zombie movies, and someone who has seen this, and night of the living dead dozens of times over the years... I am ashamed too admit that I missed the "We are coming to get you Barbara" reference for about a decade.
I honestly forgot how funny this movie is. Love your reaction though such a wonderful laugh.
Love Shaun of the Dead, but Hot Fuzz has my heart in the trilogy, but this is great for horror month and a classic horror/comedy. Both guy are in that one too. It's an action/comedy/thriller?
“How’s that for a slice of fried gold?”
-Shaun to Ed of the dead
“ I’m sorry, Shaun. No… I’m sorry, Shaun.
-Ed to Shaun of the not so dead yet
I can't be mad at Shaun for not noticing because I wouldn't either, although in my defence where I live it is always trashed and there is always drunk people staggering about, so it will just look the same , love the reaction and can't wait to watch more of your videos 👍
I've always reasonably enjoyed your reactions as of late, but you singing a line from The Doors has sealed the deal. I'm a fan.
Braindead/Dead Alive is an amazing zombie movie directed by Peter Jackson (either his first or second film). Features an epic scene on how to deal with a zombie horde 🤣
The weird and awesome thing about this trilogy, is that my favorite one depends on where i'm at in life. I guess you can say that about all movies , but if you've seen them it makes more sense.😂
This movie is a classic already!!! Hello, Ames. Hope all's well your way my friend.
Love the "Jeremy" reference. Thats whats up. IYKYK
I had the honor of being the music director for a musical parody version of this movie. It had a whole song called Beating Them Off, it was magnificent
Don't STOP me NOW! 😂😂 An iconic scene that made me laugh until I cried 🤣🤣
What an awesome movie. Back then i bought de DVD version and it had some animated extra content that it's delicious to watch. It ads more depth to the plot and fill some movie gaps. If you have the chance i recomend giving it a look. Great reaction!! 😎👍
2:49 Peter the other roommate, great impressionist. Was in The Phantom Menace and John Wick 3.
One of my favourite comedies! (Hot Fuzz might be slightly better, but this feels more like a classic)
