I have missed you guys so much! You bring something unique to the board game TH-cam scene. You inspire me so much with your channel and I recently found a green box of Arboretum that I'm keeping for years. Much love from Sweden!
You have no idea how much comments like this mean to us, because being unique and doing things differently has always been (and will continue to be) one of our main goals with our channel. Thank you very much for the kind words, it's great knowing when our channel resonates this strongly with viewers. (Also nice to know when we have viewers in places like Sweden). And nice snag with the Arboretum green box! Dylann and I preordered that game many years ago but that green box was no longer available at the time. That's a bit of a Collectors Item now, cherish it! What an amazing game.
I love purging and I had a hard time when I started big purges so I would watch minimalists. One lady said that she never regretted getting rid of anything. And for the amount of things gone, should she need to rebuy something, what's gone was worth the one thing she needed. Glad to see you back!
Very well said! I, too, have yet to regret any items I've purged, including board games. The more you do it, the easier it gets and the better it feels. Thanks for watching! Feels good to be back. 🙂
Thanks! And yeah, I do prefer "opportunity" over "shame", but also for people who aren't deep into the hobby, both terms might still be a little unclear. I know it's maybe boring or straightforward but "unplayed games" feels most right to me as it's unambiguous.
Great to see another one of these videos. It's always helpful for me to watch others choose to move on from games. I am currently staring at eleven uhaul boxes of games that I am about to unpack and begin the selling process along with several others already on the table to list. Hopefully I can decide to get rid of more while I am at it. Just got married and moved into a new house but have a limited amount of space to really store my games. Before I just stacked games wherever I could or stored them. Not really an opportunity anymore and if I am honest with myself a lot of them will probably never get played again...or at all. The Transcontinental is one of those games I'm working to sell. I also had really, really wanted to love this game. It's beautiful but just cannot get it to the table and reviews leave me unimpressed. Best of luck with continuing to curate your collection!
Thanks for sharing your experiences here! It feels like with every new stage of life you can reassess your entire collection and what board gaming as a hobby means to you, hey? It's not easy to let things go, especially when we were once excited about them (and maybe still are). Congrats on getting married and also on the new house!
I resonated so much with your reasons for parting with Summoner Wars (minus the dice part). It is same reason I got rid of my FFG netrunner collection and why I'm always hesitant to get into competitive "life-style" games.
It's tough to resist the temptation though, isn't it? I look at games like these and wonder if it could be a favourite if I gave it the proper time investment... but in order to confirm or deny that hunch means committing to it being a lifestyle game for a little while. Life's too short for that mentality, IMO. Oh and just to be clear, my complaints about the dice are a matter of personal preference. I 100% acknowledge it's not a design flaw. Thanks for watching!
So lovely running into you at the book store a couple weeks ago! Never apologize - people have lives and your family is priority - hope you both get lots of rest and time with your kiddos! You will not regret the time you’ve spent with your family ❤ Also make sure Dylann doesn’t slack off his cousin responsibilities - watching the kids and cat so you guys can get out of the house 😂
Hey! I'll be sure to let Dylann know, haha. It was a pleasure meeting you, although I've only been recognized a few times and I'm always caught off guard, so I apologize if I seemed a little all over the place. I told my wife after, "shoot, I didn't even ask her what some of her favourite games are!". Anyway, thanks for introducing yourself and for watching the channel! See you at Game-itoba in January, perhaps? (A few of us have been chatting about it in our Discord, come join us!)
@ I was also all over the place no need to apologize- I felt like a stalker following you till I had the courage to say something 😂😂 Carcasonne/Bohnanza were my gateway to modern games both of which I still love! But I’m a huge battle line, castles of burgundy and feast for Odin fan (sorry 😭) I just joined the discord today thank you for the invite - we’re planning on attending in January and I’ll be looking forward to hopefully seeing you guys there 🙌
No shame in that. As others have said, 2024 has been a tough year for many of us. We hope you're doing well and that you get in some more gaming in 2025! Thanks for watching.
Thanks! (But just a heads up, it's "Carlo", no "s". Fun fact: my parents named me "Carlos" at birth, then 3 days later paid $35 to have the "s" removed. True story.)
Welcome back, Carlo! 🙂 The first game I'd ever even heard of on this list was Paint The Roses, which I have played and enjoyed (not enough to play, but I'd definitely play it again!). Here are some I'm going to get rid of in my next cull: CURIOUS CARGO. You mentioned this when talking about Paint the Roses. I won Curious Cargo in a math trade, and I played it with one of my best friends. We both hated it! 😂 We love brain burners, but the luck of the tiles and cards dictate your success in the game to an extreme degree, which seemed wrong for a logic puzzle. Trying to get any cargo loaded is such a crapshoot, because you're trying to offload what you have and so you add a truck but you end up screwing over your opponent, even if you don't intend to. And what is with the points printed absolutely everywhere but don't mean anything unless it's a tie? 🤷♂️ I got Pipeline in the same haul (also a pipe building game by Ryan Courtney), and I was worried I'd hate it too, but it's actually pretty great. CATAN. This hasn't traded the last two times I've posted it, so I'll probably just donate it to my class permanently. My parents have the first English edition if I feel like playing it. NOTRE DAME. This game is fine. But I don't need “fine” games in my collection, because I'll always reach for the good ones. THE RED CATHEDRAL. Nothing wrong with this game, but similarly to Notre Dame, I got it almost a year ago and I haven't reached for it. CAYLUS. We all enjoyed this game the two times we played it. I just worry that if we were to play with someone who loved “take that”, it could be a miserable experience. SNOWDONIA. I'm not sure why, but the art in this game bothers me. The gameplay is interesting, but the art makes me feel like it's amateurish, even though it isn't. As for my unplayed games, I only have one: ARKWRIGHT: THE CARD GAME. I've played the board game, but not the card game, and that was a while ago so it doesn't help. Totally agree with what you're saying about not questioning people's objections to game themes. A friend of mine keeps wanting me to play ARCHIPELAGO, but I find the whole “colonise the island and employ the stereotypical-looking natives lest they rebel” idea insulting and very dated. It's time we as a society learned from that. On a more local level, I have reservations about playing COOPER ISLAND because the homophone “Kuper Island” is the colonial name for Penelakut Island nearby. Kuper Island Residential School was one of the most horrific, which, in combination with attacks by the Bella Bella and by Royal Navy personnel who had no idea how to administer what they thought was justice, nearly wiped out the population of the Penelakut people who lived there. I know the game is not about that, but I don't want people to get the wrong idea. Not when there are so many other games we could play that are fun and inoffensive. Anyway, good to have you back! See you soon! (By the way, if you plan to resurrect the game collection roast videos, let me know! My collection has changed a lot since February 2022 when I first sent you the photo … so if you do pick me someday, you could even compare old with new!)
Jon! It has been a while, hasn't it? (By the way, are you the Jon V in our Discord?) I haven't played Snowdonia, Arkwright: The Card Game, or Notre Dame, but I'm familiar with them. I also culled The Red Cathedral and Catan. I also disliked Curious Cargo, but the scoring/win system was actually one of the few things I liked! It was at least novel and provided some tension near the end, but the logistics of lining up trucks, creating your pipe networks correctly and making sure everything lines up, etc... it just felt more like work than a game. I've played Caylus a couple times on BGA and really liked it, I went and bought Caylus 1303 but have yet to try it. Caylus can absolutely be a tight, unforgiving game, but I don't see it as a "take that" style game, I think it's similar to games like Agricola, Hansa Teutonica, and even your (still?) favourite, Yokohama (which is fantastic, by the way), in the sense that you can get in each other's way and make life difficult, but you can't outright destroy people's stuff or undo a ton of progress. I think of games with abilities like "destroy target opponent's building" or "steal X coins from an opponent", because those don't require any skill or thought, you just play the card or whatever and the opponent has no way to stop it. In Caylus, sure, the Provost can be nasty, but even the times where I've been blocked the most, I think, "you know, I probably should've been less greedy" or "I should've spent more money moving the Provost somewhere else first". Thank you, as always, for such a thoughtful comment, and especially for your insights about Cooper Island. I had no idea about that theme as I've never played it, and, as I mentioned, my knowledge of history isn't as strong as I'd like it to be. But this also reminds me of when a game called Manitoba was released around 8 or 10 years ago. Absolutely shameful on the part of the designer/publisher, and since I believe you're in BC if I'm not mistaken, you might be particularly interested to read up on that one if you haven't yet. My comment is long enough already so I won't get into that here. Lastly - we have a proper update video coming soon and we'll talk about the collection roast series so stay tuned for that.
It's a very good game, I just wish it clicked with me a bit more. Maybe if I hadn't played The Crew my expectations would be a bit lower but the bar has been set pretty high. Ben Goldman deserves a lot of credit for pulling it off in such an impressive way though.
New here but glad you talk about culling. Some really financially irresponsible people in this hobby who just go into credit card debt to collect games and look at them on their shelf.
There are definitely some financially irresponsible people out there, and if someone or their family members are having a worse quality of life as a result of too many games being purchased then I would absolutely agree with you. But it's also important to remember some people collect games for other reasons, and for some people money isn't an issue. One more thing: when it borders on "hoarding", this can often be attributed to some type of trauma experienced earlier in life, and hoarding is often a coping mechanism to deal with something else. Anyway, it's not that I disagree with your comment, I think I mostly agree, but just figured I'd put this here. And yeah, I do think culling is generally a very healthy (not to mention productive and liberating!) thing to do in this hobby. Thanks for watching!
Hey Carlo, have you played Hanamikoji? Seems right up your alley. Its a lane battler like Battle Line with some interesting I-cut-you-choose and hidden information mechanics, and I think it is better than Air, Land, and Sea (plus Hanamikoji is actually on BGA). Also, have you played Parade? Its an Alice in Wonderland inspired card game with great hand management, and its one of the only thinky 2 player games I know that works with 3-5 players as well. And Dylan, have you played For the King (and Me)? I wanted to get into Biblios on your recommendation but since its impossible to get ahold of I was considering For the King (and Me), since apparently it's just a Biblios reskin with a few mechanics changes that I've heard good things about. I prefer the aesthetics of biblios but im more of a function over form guy (I like Battle Line).
I haven't played Hanamikoji yet but I've wanted to try it for a long time. I think it's on Boardgamearena so maybe I'll give it a shot there. Dylann might not see this and I can't recall if he has played For the King (and Me), I've played it online and the main difference is that for each of the 5 dice there are now 2 point values instead of 1. So, the person with the highest value of a colour gets the higher points, and then second highest gets a smaller amount of points too. It makes the game more forgiving and between that rule change and the artwork it presents itself as a bit more of a family game. It's still good but I like Biblios much more. Thanks for watching! We won't always get to questions like this on TH-cam that aren't related to the video, but you're welcome to come join our Discord and chat more with us there, or send us an email. All info in the video description. Thanks again! 🙂 (And I agree with you - Battle Line is still the gold standard for a 2-player card game, IMO).
My group only ever plays Isle of Cats in Family Mode. Choose two of three objectives before the game starts and then it's just drafting cats for five rounds. Much faster and much more focus on the actual fun part.
I've actually heard this from a couple other people before but totally forgot until now. Normally when games have a family variant or a "first time" variant, I usually skip them and go straight to the full game, but in this case it sounds like I would enjoy the family variant more in this game. Maybe I'll suggest we try that some time with my sister-in-law, as I've already promised this copy to her. Thanks!
Great to see you back, Carlo! 2023 was the year of no new games, 2024 was (mostly) the year of no new vids. What will you be abstaining from in 2025? ;). Summoner Wars is on my list of games I bought then sold unplayed, mostly because I couldn’t find anyone interested in playing at the time. Thanks! Oh yeah, you might have misheard me, none of our update videos are Patreon-exclusive. We just don't feel our recent updates have belonged on the main channel, so they are unlisted TH-cam links which get posted in our Discord server. You should consider joining! In case you don't know, it's basically just a free chat room that you can access in your web browser or through an app. There's no cost, no obligation to contribute to discussions, you can just lurk quietly and see what others are talking about, and as a result of being there you'll always get more info/news about what we've been playing/doing, non-board game stuff in our lives, etc. If you have any issues joining, send us an email (allyoucanboard@gmail.com) and I'll help you out. Or, if you prefer not to join, send us an email and I'll send you the link to our recent update video. But the recent update video was just me on camera, we'll have another one soon which WILL appear on the main channel, so stay tuned for that.

Great to see you back. (BTW, some gamers call it their "shelf of opportunity," which is more positive than "shelf of shame," for sure.)

But happy to hear you feel it’s not for the occasional/casual play since that’s be how I engaged with it even if I had it again.
Haha, great question! I hadn't really thought of that... maybe I'll abstain from the act of disappearing from the channel.
Could you do a Trick Shot review? Also, do you have Trick Shot 2nd edition? I hear 2nd edition is much improved over the 1st edition.
So the rumors that came to us in New England that most of Canada sunk into the Hudson Bay were false?
Good to know.
Nice to see you again.
JJE! Haha, thanks! Good to "see" you again too. Please tell me you've got your mess of a game shelf in order since the collection roast video. 😁
Good to see you again! Is/will there be a non-Patreon “where we were, what’s next” vid for us regular subscribers? 😅
Isle of Cats is convoluted. No interest.
You have played Blood Bowl 3 online on Steam? Really cool experience.
I haven't, but I know we have very similar taste in games so I'll definitely look into it. Thanks!
I heard this guy hates Lisbon
Sounds like you've been spending too much time in Porto...
(But seriously, Porto is amazing too).
@AllYouCanBoard where else would I get Port if not in Porto!
Yuck.
