So, where's Solid state vs Tube amps? This is more like Blues Man vs guitar amps!

Hi Jeff. It’s been a while since I checked in with your TH-cam channel (and your journey in general). Gotta say, I enjoyed this video WAY more than most of the typical big guitar channels, i.e. a real guy, going through the process of finding out what he likes and doesn’t like. Also, it’s nice to feel I’m not being SOLD TO etc., so great stuff! I too am a fan of Lyle and his TH-cam channel (Psionic Audio). Anyway, it was a pleasure to hear you describe you history and to hear your thoughts on the various amps you’ve had experience with. For me, I think hand wired is a must, for its ease of fix-ability. Cheers Jeff

I went down a similar rabbit hole when I got back into guitar some years ago. So many more choices now and varying opinions. Started out with the digital stuff (not as heavy, more "features"), including the Boss Katanas, Roland Blues Cube, the Boss Cube Streets, Blackstar Debut 50, a Helix Stomp pedal through a PA, etc., but wasn't satisfied with them (except for home practice). Also bought some tube amps: a Vox AC10, a few Blues Jr.'s eventually and Monoprice's 15-watt tube amp, but returned or sold those. Even bought a higher-end Mesa Boogie Mark 5 amp, but it sounded very boxy. After all that, I realized the best amps I ever had were the simplest tube ones: The Fender Pro Junior IV and Monoprice's 5-watt tube amp. I sold those at the time, but now that I know more and have been in some bands, my new Pro Junior IV (SE model this time, though the tweed one is just as good) has really been impressing me. Relatively light weight (23 lbs), easy to dial in (just 2 knobs), keeps up with a drummer and band easily, has a nice Fender sound, and doesn't sound boxy. They key is to put together a good pedal board for it (even a small one with just an overdrive, boost, and delay or reverb may be all you need). I may buy that 5-watt Monoprice tube amp again, too, and then be done with it. Went down a similar rabbit hole with guitars, too...

Play a '65 Fender Bandmaster etc and you won't go near tone master ever again.

    • @stratolestele7611
      @stratolestele7611 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@clovergrass9439 it's not one or the other. I've got some great amps, including my old '68 Super Reverb, but I, on a daily basis, play my Fender Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb. Probably on a 40 to 1 ratio. Why? Volume, up or down, and the ability to attenuate and keep a reasonable amount of good tone. It's humming beside me at this very moment.
But don't ever come after my '68 Super Reverb or my Marshall JTM45 or my beloved 4x12 it sits on! 😊
I've got what is already getting semi-old, PRS "30" 1x12 combo that I run with a extension 1x12 cab. It's kind of like a small Marshall stack, though we all know how loud a good 30w tube amp is! It's USA assembled and I'd put its quality up there with any good quality PCB production amp. Zero issues with it since I bought it when it was less than a year old. I don't count an occasional scratchy volume pot an issue because I don't twist the knob often enough. A lil spray of contact cleaner and a few twisties and she's good to go.
Yep, I definitely like Friedman amps. The Runt was on my shortlist, but I ended up with another guitar instead.

Very good video, that’s a good experience that was convenient to share it as beginners have many of this issues that only send money to the drain. I have a similar story with both guitars and amps, I have was very close to get a Boss Nextone but they were sold out. Instead, my final amp (after 4 other) was a Roland JC-22 that works very well with pedals and give me a pleasant sound when combined with the Tumnus and Xotic compressor and super clean booster. Still I have the Orange and other modelling amps. No tube amp yet but who knows 😉

Being old (69) I was raised with tube televisions and stereos. My dad fortunately invested in the best they had back in the early 1960's. I've always loved tubes, and in recent decades tube amps, which I've accumulated a few of. Little old tube amps running on a couple 6V6 or EL84 power tubes for the most part, Gibson and Ampeg, but a couple good clones too. A 1964 Deluxe Reverb clone with Weber 12F150, and VOX AC10 (JMI circuit) head through an Avatar version of a Celestion blue (A25) 12" speaker cabinet. Those old Gibson amps have gone way up in value recently, but the Ampeg amps can still be bought at excellent values. Look for an old Mercury, Jet, or Rocket from the golden era, they have some on Reverb last time I looked, under $1K for most of them. Lyle at Psionic recommend the new Vox AC15C (not AC15CC, which is a different version). He doesn't like the AC10C as much, which I understand from the tech perspective, but it sounds great and is light weight, plus you plug it into a larger cab for a bigger sound. It gets the top boost sound to my ears, maybe not a real AC30 but similar. Friedman makes good sounding amps, I've heard good things from most users, not anything bad yet. My latest love is a Marshall JTM-1H, I was dubious but it really does get THAT SOUND, even the 1 watt is too loud at overdrive, for that you hit the .01 watt button on the back (a push-push). Incredible sounds from what appears to be an overpriced (don't ask me what I paid) little piece of tech with few components, but it gets THE SOUND...!

I got 3 small amps. Tubes and Solid State. I get any tone out of them I like and this varies. So far I had no issues and am happy. I do not get them fixed, but buy the very same one again. They are such good cheap amps I do not care about anything. And with 71 in your case I would stop chasing tones anyways. It is just a waste of time and takes all the sense out of all you might try. This is just how I see your situation.

@@stratolestele7611 I agree to some degree. I got my last pedal yesterday. Also from Boss and well known. My goal is to reduce my pedalboard to maximally 5. Another pedalboard with all the sounds I like. I am on track now. Anyway everyone should do whatever he likes. If he likes to chase tones why not? It was firstly in his case my opinion and what I did a waste of money. But on the other hand, why this video at all? To be honest 1 guitar, 1 Head and 1 Small Cabinet is my goal. End I have my own spirit and way of life and I am in no ways judging.

Hello from STL. I'm in the same boat. Looking for that perfect clean Fender sparkly tone. Unfortunalty I don't trust the most recent fenders on the market. (Thank you Psionic Audio) They all seem to cut corners... Expecially for the current exorbiant prices. I was actually looking at the Runt 20 today myself. Ansking myself, am I really going to spend that much for an amp when I primarily a bassplayer. Anyway, glad you like the Runt. I might have to put a few extra pennies asside... Buy once, Cry once!

I do not grasp the benefits with tube, that is old tech. Some will say well they will bloom, crack up!

    Hey Jeff ,
    Great video my friend.
I to have been watching a lot of "Psionic`s" content , He certainly knows his stuff and gives you the benefit of his experience in an matter of fact manner that I enjoy.
    Just like yourself.🙏
He has given me good reason to reconsider a number of items I once thought were really "The Goods" if you know what I mean.
Money is hard to come by and if I am paying for something with the expectation of quality , I expect to get exactly that , Not a box of marketing smoke and mirrors built on old reputations for that are sometimes no longer deserved.
I have my Nextone Special as you know and a Marshall DSL40CR which Psionic reviewed and was happy with , albeit at its price point.
I tend to like Amps that have the controls on the face instead of on top which cuts down my choices.🤔
I have thought seriously about a Tone Master but as yet have not pulled the trigger , Not like it's going to make me sound as good as you !!☺
Your Friedman looks very nice , I will watch to see how you go with it , Hope its a winner for you.
Hope the young fella` is improving and all the family are doing well.
    Take care
    Cheers

We're just alike! I am your age and started paying 5 years ago (after 40 years). Been through at least 50 guitars from $200 - $6000. Been through tube and SS amps from $100 - $3000. What is the BEST for home playing? Fender Champ X2 into a celestion 12 cab with ABY switch bringing in two Micro Cubes. The tonal characteristics are amazing blending these three and all at relatively low volume! Micro Cubes (by themselves) are simply the best little things a home player can have.

We’re pretty much on the same page only I just started seriously playing guitar in the last year. I bought quite a few guitars 🎸 that I got good deals on and at some point I’ll make some money 💰 on them either selling them outright or trading. I’m really only interested in the blues and Michael Bloomfield is my favorite artist. My friend who is a professional guitarist recently bought a 1976 Bicentennial Gibson Firebird and I’ve learned it’s a very versatile guitar and great for blues. I’ve been listening to Johnny Winter a lot to hear what the Firebird sounds like. Im not crazy about his singing but his playing is solid. I’m a Strat freak and never knew anything about the Firebird but I’m catching up. I watch all of Dave Simpson’s videos. He’s just great and I learn a lot. I’m waffling on moving up from my Fender Champion 50XL and the 100XL. By the time I’m good enough for it I’m thinking about the Boss Katana MK Artist II. It’s a small stack but I think it will have a really good professional sound. I have a way to go before I play well enough to justify getting that but I practice hard everyday and I’m not giving up. I’m an older person too and I really like what you’re doing.
I L🩷VE that multi color Strat in your video. My favorite one has a solid rosewood neck. It plays so good 🤩. Keep doing what you’re doing. Im subscribed. 👍☮️🌞🎸🎵🩵

Finding the right amp is like going down the rabbit 🐇 hole 😕. You might want to swap your Fender Tone Master Deluxe Reverb for the non Tone Master Deluxe Reverb. I’m definitely not an expert, in fact I can barely play but I have always had audiophile equipment because there is nothing wrong with my ear 👂. I have a Fender Champion 50XL and a 100XL. I had to start somewhere and also need to learn about pedals and effects. I figure when I get better it will be easy to sell Fender amps. My plan is to work up to the Boss Katana MK II Artist head and cab. It’s a small stack with a headphone jack and attenuator, good for an apartment and not crazy expensive 💵.
I don’t know if you’ve heard it but the BadCat Black Cat small stack is a terrific blues amp. Bonnie Raitt uses it. It costs about $2k which is twice the Boss Katana but for someone like you it’s worth it because you can play. I have a really long way to go before I can justify getting that but it sounds fabulous 🎶❕Besides, I spent a lot of money on stereo equipment and guitars trying to find the perfect one which I did 🥰. Keep putting up videos I’m learning a lot and enjoy your music.
