Yes and no. Amon didn't "dodged" attacks just by reading movements; he actually USED his bloodbending to "minimally" move the enemy and this making them failing at the aiming, Mako explains that in the last episodes.
Its not just because of that. The crying was because when he sensed that his brother was going to do that he accepted his brothers fate and choice. He said "You are all i have left". So even when his brother kills himself he probably would do it to so he just let him do it... THATS why he actualy cried and this is just sad
I don't think he cried being hurt that his brother was going to kill them, rather that in his heart he knew their existence was the legacy of an evil man, that they were both broken and didn't have a place in the world anymore. He accepted their fate
This scene was a somber moment, because Tarlok realized him and Amon/Noatak became what their father wanted them to be, so he put a stop to it before anyone else got hurt.

And I was just thinking, you don't just become wise just by trying to be wise, but by being still, and just observing. Hence things that may seem unimportant or less meaning suddenly gain weight and messages ten times their worth in animation or writing. This person has definitely made an impact on me lmao.
So then why does he say “The two of us together again! There’s nothing we can’t do!” as if he’s excited and looking forward to the future with him and his brother and what they can accomplish. Seems a bit contradictory is all.
@@AiRbOrNeAnDrOiD Deep down Amon knows that both of them have done exactly what their father wanted and they have no future anywhere. Amon was putting on a mask when he said "The two of us together again! There's nothing we can't do!" because once again he knows they can't start over because that would be exactly what their father before them did. It would be better to put an end to their tragic story.
Their father committed crimes, escaped to a new place with a new identity and passed the hate and quest for vengeance to his offspring. They committed crimes and were escaping to a new place potentially starting the cycle all over again but Tarrlok put an end to it. Kind of poetic.
All 3 tried & failed to take over republic city too. Yakone tried with organized crime. Tarrlok tried with political maneuvering & Amon with revolution. All failed.
i like it because LOK showed that the world evolved drastically and it felt very different from ATLA. i wish the fights against these villians were a bit longer but thats on nickelodeon then the actual directors.

Noatok definitely felt what his brother was doing. He didn't bother to stop him because he knew what he had done and didn't want to live with the guilt.
At this point, he began to realize that despite wanting to start over and start, over their short escape, Notatok quickly realized there was no going back and that the good days were truly behind them.

For me this scene had such a huge impact, because at that point after losing his bending and all ambitions, Tarrlok felt like he was a no one anymore. So, this could possibly be interpreted as "I have nothing left" from Noatak's words. At the last second, he sheds a tear of final remorse, as he realized that he was going to die, he could have easily bloodbent Tarrlok's hand away, but didn't try to stop his brother, because he knew there was no bright future awaiting. Both siblings had nothing else to live for, thus making up the decision to commit sudoku. So dark. 07/11/23 Edit: This is only my interpretation on the full scene, I can't for sure know what were Noatak's thoughts during the final moments before disaster. His tear could imply that he's either saying goodbye, maybe just reminiscing about his past, or the guilt that he felt on the sudden realisation that his young bro wanted to end it all, I wouldn't know. And yes, I did type Sudoku purposely :)

This was a very shocking and impressive season ending. Even though they were villains I was saddened by the route they chose. Very strong and unique characters both
This scene is so heavy… Especially the fact that they are brothers… It seems that Noatak had a sense of hope and a clean slate, due to him reuniting with his brother, but Tarrlok tragically felt the weight of the responsibility to end both their lives before anyone else could get hurt… Or perhaps Tarrlok just didn’t/couldn’t see any hope in their future, and felt he was nothing without his bending and his political influence. Regardless of their precise mindsets, the brothers’ deaths carry an extremely heavy weight to them. :(
It never felt like Tarrlok cared much about his status tbh, it was just a tool for him to get what he wants - and he had what he wanted right here but he realised it had to end. Amon knew this as well and chose to not stop his brother.
I think Tarrlok also thought that, when he saw the Equalist equipement, his brother would continue the path or the ways of their father. A new start but it would still be in the same way as what happened in republic city. And Tarrlok denied this way. And Noatak sensed his movements and realized that, realized that his brother did not want to continue being what their father made them to be.

@@vetarlittorf1807 Benders can feel their element, it is how they are able to reach out and use it. And yes he never openly showed or stated it but imo it can be assumed. Korra was hiding from him and he knew where she was, because he can sense her blood. And about him having stopped it if he had noticed, that would not explain the tear then. He didn't cry because he heard his actual name again because he felt good about that, it brought him some small joy. When his brother was about to kill them, he cried with a sad look, because he realized what was happening.
@@kingskelett6265 You are so wrong it's hilarious. First of all, no. Benders cannot innately feel their elements. They have to be aware of it prior. Hence Katara was unaware of the river underneath the palace in the last Agni Kai. And if Amon was able to sense people with bloodbending, then his lieutenant would not have been able to spy on him. Second of all, Amon knew where Korra was because he heard her sigh. It had nothing to do with her blood. Third of all, Amon shed a tear because he was sentimental because Tarrlok reminded him of the days when he was happy. And he wasn't sad when he shed the tear, he was nostalgic. And it was in direct response to Tarrlok's statement. Do you even realize that having Amon suddenly become suicidal out of nowhere constitutes as bad writing? There's a reason why this scene is referred to as their murder-suicide.
Amon and Tarrlok are very obvious parallels to Azula and Zuko. The prodigious sibling who is being favored by their father, and the brother who is being looked upon despite being extremely powerful. They both used to have sort of warm relationships, of course, Azula and Zuko's relationship was never as good as Amon and Tarrlok's, but still, they used to be closer when they were young. And at the end, both sibling duos' story ended tragically. Amon and Tarrlok died together when they finally became a family again. But it was too late for them, because they were broken. Azula and Zuko separated forever due to Azula's malicious intentions, and their relationship was broken for good. And both damages were mostly caused by their fathers. Without their father, Amon and Tarrlok would live happily as brothers. And without Ozai, Zuko and Azula's relationship wouldn't be that toxic.
Most of the villains in Korra could be seen as paralells to the original cast or story I think. Amon and Tarrlok are Azula and Zuko. Zaheer and his group were pretty much Aang and the gang from back then with Korra being their 'firelord' to stop, and Zaheer choosing the opposite path that Aang did which is releasing his tethers, rather than being able to focus on his attachments like his love. Unalaq was an Avatar champion of spirits, rather than humanity as the traditional Avatar was. With Kuvira finishing the series by leading the Earth Kingdom into being conquerers, rather than being the conquered as was Ozai's intention.
Double suicide on an animated series mostly intended for kids. Just wow. Imagine the shock I had when I've watched this scene for the first time, what a show 😢 This depth and this darkness is what I appreciate the most about LoK

Tarrlok knew in their situation they would just keep the cycle that their father (being a criminal-fleeing-starting a new family etc) started thus he ended the cycle right there and there

This was by far (in my opinion) the darkest scene of the avatar series it just feels so dark and sad both of them trying to start a new life but both knowing that it's too late to get redemption and tarik using the glove to kill himself and his brother and the saddest part is that amon knew all about this and even shed a tear before dying
Amon didnt want to die. He just accepted the death wish of his brother since he was the only thing left and fighting the only person which meant something to you was useless
It’s funny that Tarrlock’s father & brother told him he was too soft & didn’t have the heart to get down & dirty. Yet he wasn’t too soft to put an end to their family’s bloodline 😂
I love moments in TV shows where a character knows that there is no moving on from the things that have happened. All they can do now is close the book.
Tarrlok knew that this is going to be a cycle again with the next generation of kids. The father did the same exact thing they are doing and to end it, would mean forfeiting their lives. Amon probably also realized it and didn't even try to stop him. He knew.
Damn... the thing that made this scene go from brutal to sad was that subtle tear off noataks eye, showing that he new where tarlokks hand was, and what would happen to them
Out of everything in cinema, I can say that this scene here was the most impactful thing to me. I don’t know why, but I’ve never felt so much emotion In anything cinematic as much as this
I know it had to be done, but I really wish Tarrlok had just left with Noatok/Amon, and started their lives anew like a team, and like brothers, instead of ending it like that. All these years later, it still makes my heart hurt like it did when I was watching in the living room the day it first aired. It was just as sad and heart throbbing of point in my life too. Only, despite having suffering a crippling defeat, resulting in the loss of their whole lives that they'd already made, they were together again, and became filled with an awesome rush of hope and renewed purpose. But then it ended. Up in smoke. I was going through something very similar at the time myself.
Actually, Tarlokk already hinted at this ending before. When he told his story, he revealed that his family was in a cycle of hatred. After his father fled Republican city to start a new life, he couldn’t let go of his past self and hatred. All that baggage got passed on to Tarlok and Nowatok. They tried not follow in his footsteps but ultimately became just like his father one way or the other. His father left the city bitter and angry and lived the rest of his life that way too. Now that they are both fleeing and talking about starting a new life, Tarlok knew (or was scared of) what it would eventually lead to. So he decided to end the cycle of hatred he saw and killed them both, as a mercy.
@@dannywang4543 there are other ways to “end the cycle of hatred”. To hate something, or someone, is a choice. To start a political movement by lying to everyone, instead of addressing an actual problem at hand, or starting a career in politics with the sole intention of taking over an entire economic atmosphere under the thinly veiled excuse of benign humanitarianism, are both choices. They might not have ever been able to go back to the “good old days”, but they still could’ve found something that’s theirs, and not their father’s. They could’ve changed, and become totally different people if they’d just let go of their father, and what he did to them. A child’s destiny is not shaped by their parents. Yes, in trying to be better than their father, they committed a series of actions that were no different than the ones he had. But that wasn’t of him! Noatak was ashamed of being his father’s son, and Tarlokk wanted to prove that he wasn’t “weak”. They committed suicide because they couldn’t see past the point in their lives before they became benders. They couldn’t think of any other life that could be happier. I understand why they called it quits, but I still believe they could’ve pushed through it.
@@jackphillips3354 I think the word "IF" is a bit too cruel for them. There's no really turning back on what they did. Even if they can live a normal lives, there will be a harrowing sense of uncertainty on what future they will and there family will have. They both know it and accepted their fate. They live for that moment, and they seize death on their term not bothering the what's if of their lives. They are at peace now.
@@lowcjr2845 I still don’t see how that would’ve prevented them from turning all around. What they did would never go away, but successfully escaped from any legal ramifications despite of the fact. They had each other, and they had options. They could’ve taken new identities, maybe alter their appearances a little, found a new body of land to set up camp, and go from there. Yes, their father did that just to manipulate his sons, but that doesn’t mean they would just keep doing the same things just for being his sons. They certainly followed his example, but only by their own choices! They realized they screwed up huge, but that’s just it. Nobody else was chasing after them on that boat, they realized how they messed up, they both made it clear to the viewer that they wanted to change, and this time, instead of going about molding the masses to their wills as they did before, they were focusing on themselves, and that’s how changing the world is done! I just think they could’ve made a better life for themselves despite what they did up till then is all.
@@lowcjr2845 what we DID doesn't determine the entire course of our lives. what we DO and WHY we do it does. Noatok/Amon and Tarrlok definitely screwed up, made some pretty poor choices, but they could've made better ones. they were on a speed boat and the law was nowhere close to on their tail. they had each other, they were able bodied. they could've reinvented themselves, and used their abilities to learn how and why they screwed up, and what would've been a better way to go about it. itd have been one thing if they were cornered with no way out. but they werent. what they did was commit suicide to run away from their shame, instead of dealing with, and atoning for it. that's just as morally reprehensible as what they did.
I really would’ve liked to see noatak get a redemption arc. Him and his brother were never evil. All he wanted was to level the playing field for everyone. Of course he took things a little too far and became the similar yet opposite version of his father, I wish him and his brother both had a better conclusion to their story.
Being honest I don't think it could have worked Bending in their world is like having an ability not everyone has, let's apply his logic here. "These guy can walk, but these guy can't, so I'm gonna break the legs for the one that can walk and everyone would be equal" That's what their logic was applied Instead of helping the less afortunate, they began hurting the fortunated ones, in show context it would be like mutilation for us, so yeah, Amo couldn't have a redemption arc, maybe his brother, but...
Season 1 was SO GOOD! Amon was an excellent villain, had a great backstory and it really set the bar high. I know that the ongoing Spirits and Humans conflict was a major thing to tell in LOK but it honestly went downhill after Zaheer and ending with Kuvira?
How? Kuvira was literally a mirror foil of Korra, which is kinda the point of her recovery to finally face herself. It's mad poetic. Now, if they didn't have the budget cuts, book four would have been less boring, but they did what they could
This scene is just perfect. After all, both of them became just like their dad (especially Amon) - losing and running but still hope to avenge one day. What if Amon escaped and then aimed to raise his offsprings to avenge him like what their father did. I think that's what Tarlok was thinking before he decided to end the cycle of hatred right there.
Man this scène is dark as fck. It feels dark because of the whole story. We essentially know that those 2 didn't wanted to become what they are and indirectly revenged their dad Gotta mention, the music really makes it emotional.

The irony is that it was his own father, Yakone, who gave him that name. It shows what person Yakone was when he had his sons and there was no waterbending. Just happiness.
Idk what’s so funny or confusing, this show came out years ago, I can definitely see this scene being intense enough to leave an impression on a kid. Especially on a program that’s 95% Spongebob.
They were both born from their father's bitter grudge against Avatar Aang, so it's not surprising that Tarrlok decided to end their story so that no grudge would haunt them. Very sad but that's their choice
it genuinely saddens me. this is a very somber scene but what hits me more than anything is the fact I liked both of these two as villains and still feel their end came too soon... especially with what we got next season.
Tarrlok was the best character in season 1 of Korra, and Korra's first complex character. He felt completely flushed out, he had moments where we hated him, and then with his backstory, not to mention him receiving his comeuppance from Amon, Tarrlok already paid for the consequences of his actions, had time to ponder, helped the main cast without redeeming himself in the eyes of the public, and stopped the cycle of violence that would have ensued if he didn't kill both Amon and himself.
Two brothers knowing that there's no saving left for them, so they had to end it there. Such a sad and tragic scene... I just hope they fleshed out Amon and his followers more instead of delving into the love triangle in the beginning...
Seriously, I interpret the moment differently I guess. I agree they wanted to die but I think the tear has to do for a moment. Amon was convincing himself maybe. Just maybe he could start over. But only with his brother. Knowing what his brother was doing. In realized in that last moment. That they were their father. Had to put down for greater good. Kinda like a self realization moment before the fall kinda of thing. Amon was at his most fragile and realizing his brother hates and disposable their life so much would break him. He was all he had. That moment shows. His brother had never felt the same. Really represents a broken family well.

In a setting that stands out for its awesome character development, with perfectly crafted antagonists like Zuko, Amon is another sound success. Masterful storytelling. I feel many fail to notice, how deeply valid the plight of the Equalists was. Before that, we only saw things from the benders' perspective. Often forgetting their privilege, and how some of them would abuse it. The oppression the Equalists claimed is very real. Most people are NOT benders. If a bender decides to abuse their power, non-benders often need ANOTHER bender to save them. Also, the minority of benders is the RULING one. Oligarchs, really. Most leadership positions are held by benders. The only non-bender leader of any significant government, prior to the Equalist civil war... Was Sokka. After that war ended? The world listened, and the United Republic of Nations became THE FIRST DEMOCRACY. A non-bender was ELECTED as president. Remember how important democracy is in OUR world. Now, apply that to Avatar's setting. In a way, the Equalists won. But since Avatar has a lot of smart realism, it wasn't a full victory. It was just the first step. A big one, in the right direction. But they still got Raiko, who's frankly more trouble than help much of the time. Unsurprisingly, as a lot of politicians tend to be. And in another show of pure realism, Noatak did what the power-hungry do, to movements with legitimate claims. They parasite them, then weaponize them to serve their own twisted ends. He took advantage of their fear, hatred and desperation, which were all very valid feelings. Like many dictators and bs politicians did and do, in our world. And this ending... It's painful, but it's a sublime piece of drama. Noatak KINDA SEEMS like he might finally stop, giving us hope for the two traumatised brothers. But Tarrlok decides he cannot risk it, and so it ends... Tragedy at its finest. To top it all off, Korra and her friends will never know what happened to Noatak and Tarrlok. They'll never have true closure. Which is just quite good realism as well. Life's like that. Very few things have a neat, tidy end.
Very well written and I agree completely. You should consider analyzing shows in a similar manner like this! I love when people ruminate about these things as much as I do. Sad and beautiful. This scene has always stuck with me. Incredibly profound for a show that isn't explicitly geared towards adults. Korra is probably my favorite and would be anyways if it hadn't "matured" from TLAB, because I enjoy the setting and the changes we get to see in their world. But the way they handled these themes and got across what they were trying to communicate but couldn't explicitly say/show us, is just what really seals it for me. And maybe bcus I'm biased bcus I wasn't "there" for TLAB the same way I was for LOK.
In a way I feel bad for Noatok and tarrlok they become the monsters their father wanted them to be tarrlok knew there is no future for them so he decided to end it all at least he and his brother will be together and much happier in the afterlife now about Noatok shedding a tear it's possible he may have sensed his brother trying to light up the fuel and accepted his fate or Maybe he didn't and was not aware of what he's brother was doing it's still sad i wished it didn't have to end this way for them they could have changed and possibly become an ally

I honestly don't think it could have worked Look it with the show eyes, some people have more abilities than other, and then comes a man that instead of helping the ones that has the abilities out of that one and leaving them "equal". That would be like "these dude can't walk, you can walk, so I'm gonna break your legs for everyone to be equal" That's literally like mutilation in the eyes of the people around dude, no one would have ever believed in it

Seeing this scene still makes me feel sad for these two. Both of them know well they can't start a new life due to the things they done. Just finished LOK yesterday and went back to season 1. Tarrlok is the most overlooked villian ever. Like he wasn’t even mentioned again. Somehow I had a crush on him. Especially when he kept on sending Korra gifts. And inviting her to a Gala. I kinda shipped them in my head.
The really tragic thing about this is that it was *TOTALLY* *UNNECESSARY.*. Tarlock did some bad things but he was probably on par with season 1 Zuko. Was he bad yes but far from irredeemable. He would also have his bending restored by Korra and in time he would have been a valuable member to team Avatar As far as Amon goes he is voiced by Steve Blume. It is literally impossible to hate him

Its hard to describe how powerful this scene is. I've seen/read countless deaths in movies, series, books and games but they were all just entertaining and nothing worth thinking about. But Tarrloks and Noataks death feels almost real. I cant stop watching this scene and I cant stop thinking about it and this has been going on for months. Great job Nickelodeon I guess.
There's so much weight and depth to it, a certain irony in their reunion and them finally breaking their ties to "start over" but instead choosing not to. Grim atonement and understanding that what they have done is unforgiveable. The writing of these characters especially stood out. The scene itself only underlines it all by giving closure without blowing it out of proportion. Something immense happens but it seems almost subdued in the way it's portrayed. No drama, the effects of their deaths are almost unnoticeable in the grand scheme of things. If you like this kind of character depth and interaction I recommend reading Brandon Sanderson's cosmere stuff. Mistborn: The Final Empire is a great start, as is The Way of Kings. The latter is a lot longer, though.
This scene almost repeated what their father did. Just went away then start over and then built a family then manipulated the sons and power. And I guess Tarlok foreseen this that this might repeat this to their destiny but he wouldn't let that happen and did this to both of them.. that's just sad

I agree, removing his brother's bending was extremely cruel. I mean, why not at the very least try to reverse it? If very powerful waterbenders can take bending, they should also be able to return it

Tarlock closed his eyes because he couldn’t see a path ahead for them. Noatok kept his open because he could see the end of it.

Their father committed crimes, escaped to a new place with a new identity and passed the hate and quest for vengeance to his offspring. They committed crimes and were escaping to a new place potentially starting the cycle all over again but Tarrlok put an end to it. Kind of poetic.
At that point, they realized they no was going back. The Good Days were really behind them, forever. And they could never get it back.

I’ll admit that LOK wasn’t my favorite, but this was a brilliant scene. There’s just something indescribable about it that makes it seem perfect.

For me this scene had such a huge impact, because at that point after losing his bending and all ambitions, Tarrlok felt like he was a no one anymore. So, this could possibly be interpreted as "I have nothing left" from Noatak's words. At the last second, he sheds a tear of final remorse, as he realized that he was going to die, he could have easily bloodbent Tarrlok's hand away, but didn't try to stop his brother, because he knew there was no bright future awaiting. Both siblings had nothing else to live for, thus making up the decision to commit sudoku.

07/11/23 Edit: This is only my interpretation on the full scene, I can't for sure know what were Noatak's thoughts during the final moments before disaster. His tear could imply that he's either saying goodbye, maybe just reminiscing about his past, or the guilt that he felt on the sudden realisation that his young bro wanted to end it all, I wouldn't know.

This was a very shocking and impressive season ending. Even though they were villains I was saddened by the route they chose. Very strong and unique characters both

This scene is so heavy… Especially the fact that they are brothers… It seems that Noatak had a sense of hope and a clean slate, due to him reuniting with his brother, but Tarrlok tragically felt the weight of the responsibility to end both their lives before anyone else could get hurt… Or perhaps Tarrlok just didn’t/couldn’t see any hope in their future, and felt he was nothing without his bending and his political influence. Regardless of their precise mindsets, the brothers’ deaths carry an extremely heavy weight to them. :(
It never felt like Tarrlok cared much about his status tbh, it was just a tool for him to get what he wants - and he had what he wanted right here but he realised it had to end. Amon knew this as well and chose to not stop his brother.
I think Tarrlok also thought that, when he saw the Equalist equipement, his brother would continue the path or the ways of their father. A new start but it would still be in the same way as what happened in republic city.
And Tarrlok denied this way. And Noatak sensed his movements and realized that, realized that his brother did not want to continue being what their father made them to be.

And about him having stopped it if he had noticed, that would not explain the tear then. He didn't cry because he heard his actual name again because he felt good about that, it brought him some small joy.

First of all, no. Benders cannot innately feel their elements. They have to be aware of it prior. Hence Katara was unaware of the river underneath the palace in the last Agni Kai. And if Amon was able to sense people with bloodbending, then his lieutenant would not have been able to spy on him.
Second of all, Amon knew where Korra was because he heard her sigh. It had nothing to do with her blood.
Third of all, Amon shed a tear because he was sentimental because Tarrlok reminded him of the days when he was happy. And he wasn't sad when he shed the tear, he was nostalgic. And it was in direct response to Tarrlok's statement.
Do you even realize that having Amon suddenly become suicidal out of nowhere constitutes as bad writing? There's a reason why this scene is referred to as their murder-suicide.

Amon and Tarrlok are very obvious parallels to Azula and Zuko. The prodigious sibling who is being favored by their father, and the brother who is being looked upon despite being extremely powerful. They both used to have sort of warm relationships, of course, Azula and Zuko's relationship was never as good as Amon and Tarrlok's, but still, they used to be closer when they were young. And at the end, both sibling duos' story ended tragically. Amon and Tarrlok died together when they finally became a family again. But it was too late for them, because they were broken. Azula and Zuko separated forever due to Azula's malicious intentions, and their relationship was broken for good. And both damages were mostly caused by their fathers. Without their father, Amon and Tarrlok would live happily as brothers. And without Ozai, Zuko and Azula's relationship wouldn't be that toxic.
Most of the villains in Korra could be seen as paralells to the original cast or story I think. Amon and Tarrlok are Azula and Zuko. Zaheer and his group were pretty much Aang and the gang from back then with Korra being their 'firelord' to stop, and Zaheer choosing the opposite path that Aang did which is releasing his tethers, rather than being able to focus on his attachments like his love. Unalaq was an Avatar champion of spirits, rather than humanity as the traditional Avatar was. With Kuvira finishing the series by leading the Earth Kingdom into being conquerers, rather than being the conquered as was Ozai's intention.

Season 1 was way better than all the other 3 seasons. The Villian had a good back story and a real cause for taking bending away.

Damn... the thing that made this scene go from brutal to sad was that subtle tear off noataks eye, showing that he new where tarlokks hand was, and what would happen to them
Out of everything in cinema, I can say that this scene here was the most impactful thing to me. I don’t know why, but I’ve never felt so much emotion In anything cinematic as much as this
I know it had to be done, but I really wish Tarrlok had just left with Noatok/Amon, and started their lives anew like a team, and like brothers, instead of ending it like that. All these years later, it still makes my heart hurt like it did when I was watching in the living room the day it first aired. It was just as sad and heart throbbing of point in my life too. Only, despite having suffering a crippling defeat, resulting in the loss of their whole lives that they'd already made, they were together again, and became filled with an awesome rush of hope and renewed purpose. But then it ended. Up in smoke. I was going through something very similar at the time myself.
Actually, Tarlokk already hinted at this ending before. When he told his story, he revealed that his family was in a cycle of hatred. After his father fled Republican city to start a new life, he couldn’t let go of his past self and hatred. All that baggage got passed on to Tarlok and Nowatok. They tried not follow in his footsteps but ultimately became just like his father one way or the other. His father left the city bitter and angry and lived the rest of his life that way too. Now that they are both fleeing and talking about starting a new life, Tarlok knew (or was scared of) what it would eventually lead to. So he decided to end the cycle of hatred he saw and killed them both, as a mercy.

To start a political movement by lying to everyone, instead of addressing an actual problem at hand, or starting a career in politics with the sole intention of taking over an entire economic atmosphere under the thinly veiled excuse of benign humanitarianism, are both choices. They might not have ever been able to go back to the “good old days”, but they still could’ve found something that’s theirs, and not their father’s. They could’ve changed, and become totally different people if they’d just let go of their father, and what he did to them. A child’s destiny is not shaped by their parents. Yes, in trying to be better than their father, they committed a series of actions that were no different than the ones he had. But that wasn’t of him! Noatak was ashamed of being his father’s son, and Tarlokk wanted to prove that he wasn’t “weak”. They committed suicide because they couldn’t see past the point in their lives before they became benders. They couldn’t think of any other life that could be happier. I understand why they called it quits, but I still believe they could’ve pushed through it.

Even if they can live a normal lives, there will be a harrowing sense of uncertainty on what future they will and there family will have. They both know it and accepted their fate. They live for that moment, and they seize death on their term not bothering the what's if of their lives. They are at peace now.
@@lowcjr2845 I still don’t see how that would’ve prevented them from turning all around. What they did would never go away, but successfully escaped from any legal ramifications despite of the fact. They had each other, and they had options. They could’ve taken new identities, maybe alter their appearances a little, found a new body of land to set up camp, and go from there. Yes, their father did that just to manipulate his sons, but that doesn’t mean they would just keep doing the same things just for being his sons. They certainly followed his example, but only by their own choices! They realized they screwed up huge, but that’s just it. Nobody else was chasing after them on that boat, they realized how they messed up, they both made it clear to the viewer that they wanted to change, and this time, instead of going about molding the masses to their wills as they did before, they were focusing on themselves, and that’s how changing the world is done! I just think they could’ve made a better life for themselves despite what they did up till then is all.

Noatok/Amon and Tarrlok definitely screwed up, made some pretty poor choices, but they could've made better ones. they were on a speed boat and the law was nowhere close to on their tail. they had each other, they were able bodied. they could've reinvented themselves, and used their abilities to learn how and why they screwed up, and what would've been a better way to go about it. itd have been one thing if they were cornered with no way out. but they werent. what they did was commit suicide to run away from their shame, instead of dealing with, and atoning for it. that's just as morally reprehensible as what they did.
Amon was easily my favorite villain from this entire series but seeing him die hurt me.

I really would’ve liked to see noatak get a redemption arc. Him and his brother were never evil. All he wanted was to level the playing field for everyone. Season 1 was SO GOOD! Amon was an excellent villain, had a great backstory and it really set the bar high. I know that the ongoing Spirits and Humans conflict was a major thing to tell in LOK but it honestly went downhill after Zaheer and ending with Kuvira?

This scene is just perfect. After all, both of them became just like their dad (especially Amon) - losing and running but still hope to avenge one day. What if Amon escaped and then aimed to raise his offsprings to avenge him like what their father did. I think that's what Tarlok was thinking before he decided to end the cycle of hatred right there.

it genuinely saddens me. this is a very somber scene but what hits me more than anything is the fact I liked both of these two as villains and still feel their end came too soon... especially with what we got next season.

Tarrlok was the best character in season 1 of Korra, and Korra's first complex character. He felt completely flushed out, he had moments where we hated him, and then with his backstory, not to mention him receiving his comeuppance from Amon, Tarrlok already paid for the consequences of his actions, had time to ponder, helped the main cast without redeeming himself in the eyes of the public, and stopped the cycle of violence that would have ensued if he didn't kill both Amon and himself.
I really wished these guys had a happy ending 💔

When I saw this scene as kid, I actually teared up a bit. I didn't understand it that much back then.
Two brothers knowing that there's no saving left for them, so they had to end it there. Such a sad and tragic scene... I just hope they fleshed out Amon and his followers more instead of delving into the love triangle in the beginning...

Seriously, I interpret the moment differently I guess. I agree they wanted to die but I think the tear has to do for a moment. Amon was convincing himself maybe. Just maybe he could start over. But only with his brother. Knowing what his brother was doing. In realized in that last moment. That they were their father. Had to put down for greater good. Kinda like a self realization moment before the fall kinda of thing.
Amon was at his most fragile and realizing his brother hates and disposable their life so much would break him. He was all he had. That moment shows. His brother had never felt the same. Really represents a broken family well.
Amon arguably the strongest bender after the avatars. He is also quite skilled in non-bender combat. He is just unstoppable.

I feel many fail to notice, how deeply valid the plight of the Equalists was. Before that, we only saw things from the benders' perspective. Often forgetting their privilege, and how some of them would abuse it. The oppression the Equalists claimed is very real. Most people are NOT benders. If a bender decides to abuse their power, non-benders often need ANOTHER bender to save them.
Also, the minority of benders is the RULING one. Oligarchs, really. Most leadership positions are held by benders. The only non-bender leader of any significant government, prior to the Equalist civil war... Was Sokka.
After that war ended? The world listened, and the United Republic of Nations became THE FIRST DEMOCRACY. A non-bender was ELECTED as president.
Remember how important democracy is in OUR world. Now, apply that to Avatar's setting.
In a way, the Equalists won. But since Avatar has a lot of smart realism, it wasn't a full victory. It was just the first step. A big one, in the right direction. But they still got Raiko, who's frankly more trouble than help much of the time. Unsurprisingly, as a lot of politicians tend to be.
And in another show of pure realism, Noatak did what the power-hungry do, to movements with legitimate claims. They parasite them, then weaponize them to serve their own twisted ends. He took advantage of their fear, hatred and desperation, which were all very valid feelings. Like many dictators and bs politicians did and do, in our world.
And this ending... It's painful, but it's a sublime piece of drama. Noatak KINDA SEEMS like he might finally stop, giving us hope for the two traumatised brothers. But Tarrlok decides he cannot risk it, and so it ends... Tragedy at its finest.
To top it all off, Korra and her friends will never know what happened to Noatak and Tarrlok. They'll never have true closure. Which is just quite good realism as well. Life's like that. Very few things have a neat, tidy end.
Very well written and I agree completely. You should consider analyzing shows in a similar manner like this! I love when people ruminate about these things as much as I do.
Sad and beautiful. This scene has always stuck with me. Incredibly profound for a show that isn't explicitly geared towards adults. Korra is probably my favorite and would be anyways if it hadn't "matured" from TLAB, because I enjoy the setting and the changes we get to see in their world. But the way they handled these themes and got across what they were trying to communicate but couldn't explicitly say/show us, is just what really seals it for me. And maybe bcus I'm biased bcus I wasn't "there" for TLAB the same way I was for LOK.

In a way I feel bad for Noatok and tarrlok they become the monsters their father wanted them to be tarrlok knew there is no future for them so he decided to end it all at least he and his brother will be together and much happier in the afterlife now about Noatok shedding a tear it's possible he may have sensed his brother trying to light up the fuel and accepted his fate or Maybe he didn't and was not aware of what he's brother was doing it's still sad i wished it didn't have to end this way for them they could have changed and possibly become an ally
Man… honestly i wished they could’ve been given some redemption, like how zuko was the villain in season 1, i think they could’ve done the same with Amon and Tarrlok

Look it with the show eyes, some people have more abilities than other, and then comes a man that instead of helping the ones that has the abilities out of that one and leaving them "equal".
That would be like "these dude can't walk, you can walk, so I'm gonna break your legs for everyone to be equal"
That's literally like mutilation in the eyes of the people around dude, no one would have ever believed in it

Seeing this scene still makes me feel sad for these two. Both of them know well they can't start a new life due to the things they done. The only way out is to die in order to be free of their father still haunting them. Amon shedding that tear shows he accepts his fate, ATLOK really knows how to play at your heartstrings. :'l
Just finished LOK yesterday and went back to season 1. Tarrlok is the most overlooked villian ever. Like he wasn’t even mentioned again. Somehow I had a crush on him. Especially when he kept on sending Korra gifts. And inviting her to a Gala. I kinda shipped them in my head.
We needed more of this. Not a giant mech fight.

The really tragic thing about this is that it was *TOTALLY* *UNNECESSARY.*. Tarlock did some bad things but he was probably on par with season 1 Zuko. Was he bad yes but far from irredeemable. He would also have his bending restored by Korra and in time he would have been a valuable member to team Avatar
As far as Amon goes he is voiced by Steve Blume. It is literally impossible to hate him

Its hard to describe how powerful this scene is. I've seen/read countless deaths in movies, series, books and games but they were all just entertaining and nothing worth thinking about. But Tarrloks and Noataks death feels almost real. I cant stop watching this scene and I cant stop thinking about it and this has been going on for months. Great job Nickelodeon I guess.
There's so much weight and depth to it, a certain irony in their reunion and them finally breaking their ties to "start over" but instead choosing not to. Grim atonement and understanding that what they have done is unforgiveable. The writing of these characters especially stood out.
The scene itself only underlines it all by giving closure without blowing it out of proportion. Something immense happens but it seems almost subdued in the way it's portrayed. No drama, the effects of their deaths are almost unnoticeable in the grand scheme of things.
If you like this kind of character depth and interaction I recommend reading Brandon Sanderson's cosmere stuff. Mistborn: The Final Empire is a great start, as is The Way of Kings. The latter is a lot longer, though.
This scene almost repeated what their father did. Just went away then start over and then built a family then manipulated the sons and power.
And I guess Tarlok foreseen this that this might repeat this to their destiny but he wouldn't let that happen and did this to both of them.. that's just sad
I always saw this as a form of revenge for Tarrlock because he couldn’t fathom his life without bending, rather than an attempt to end the suffering they’ve caused
I agree, removing his brother's bending was extremely cruel. I mean, why not at the very least try to reverse it? If very powerful waterbenders can take bending, they should also be able to return it
