That Lit Brothers hat trimming, I think, referred more to ladies hats, which were very ornate, and had lace and ribbons, etc. The trimming referred to those hats, which took a lot more time to make them "finished" and presentable.

Yo cuz all the way from Louisiana (the Boot) club. Thank you Captain I fell down the escalator in John Wanamaker’s when I was on a school field trip in 1st grade. All I remember seeing were those teeth at the bottom waiting to get me. I would still ride them after that but it would take me a long time to actually finally step onto it.

I worked at both Suburban Station and 30th station back in the late 70s. I knew many of the tunnels but it just looks so differently now. I could walk, underground, from the southern end of the Walnut Spruce concourse, all the way to the Greyhound station at about 19th and Market.

The last time I came back from Chestnut Hill, I had a Starbucks coffee outside Sketchers store, I watched 2 women put 3 pairs of men,s shoes in a big shopping bag and walk out.

18:32. The little hut which is now a Starbucks 😆used to be the location of the City Tourist Information Center, where you could buy Phillies tickets and tickets for the “Fairmont Park Trolley” to take you to the Zoo.

Yo cuz, that spot smelled really bad, didn't it? I had no idea that the Gallery had changed so much. I didn't know where I was until you got to the Cinnabon, which the building above it used to be the Aramark building...don't know who's in it now.

A downtown bball arena for the Sixers might be a good idea. From what I read the arena would be paid for with private money. More people would have to take public transport. But I can see that area booming with bars and restaurants. Chinatown may even benefit. I am sure that the nearby Convention Center would benefit as well as the Liberty Bell tourist area and even Old City. $1.3 billion sounds like a lot of money.

Nah that sixers arena would destroy chinatown the roads aren't built for it and it would push out everyone from increased prices

they spent all that money redoing the mall and now the property owner filed for bankruptcy. id how they could go bankrupt when they have like a million tenants in 4 malls. I think putting the sixers stadium in the middle of the city is a bad idea. the roads are already clogged as it is.

15:09. That long tiled hallway down to City Hall station on the Broad Street line used to be super dark, lit by only a few dangling bulbs! I cannot tell you how many dozens or hundreds of times my mom or dad and I walked from the Subway to get to the John Wanamaker’s basement through that hall. A solid Philly memory for me in the seventies and eighties!

    • @nicholasambrosini7078
      @nicholasambrosini7078 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm almost positive it was still that way a decade ago! Or at least... not this brightly lit. I remember it being dark and dingy still walking through these when I was in high school as well (though there definitely wasn't still Wanamaker's, haha)

That North portal of City Hall is my favorite. So pretty, all the colored marble columns. And a view down to the foundations of the building, which are like 20 feet thick, since it's an all masonry building, no steel girders in the construction ..

Fantastic four today...thankyou. What a beautiful city and seeing the underground areas is amazing. It's hard to know if you have a wide angle lens or if the corridors are as wide and as long as they appear online. The use of murals is a very clever idea rather than seeing lots of empty store fronts ...people have constant art gallery which adds to the beauty of the city.
How do these areas keep homeless and drug addicted people out especially during winters cold? I'm surprised those tunnels have so few people using them.
In Australia we don't have underground cities like you have shown today... It would be good to revisit Philly in winter. I am imagining you get snow which we don't have in our cities either. The are snowfields for skiing in Australia but rarely do we get snow in our cities. Thx again. 🦘🌻

Such as Old Swedes also a church in East Oak Lane , not far from 5th that used to be the East Oak Lane U.C.C church. It was gorgeous in there.

I grew up near Frankford and Allegheny and went to middle school at Masterman (17th and Spring Garden). My friends and I spent a lot of time after school in those concourses. We'd walk down 17th street to Arch and go in through the Aetna building, then down towards City Hall, sometimes to the Gallery, before jumping on the El to K&A. Later on in high school, I remember that concourse goes into the basement of a hotel up near 19th Street, which hosted small comic book conventions a few times a year. It was like a hidden underground city to us back in the 80s. From City Hall, you used to be able to go north to around Cherry Street and south to around Locust, in a concourse that follows the Broad Street subway. Thanks for the tour, Captain!

When I was little, my grandmother and grandfather lived in a father son, Holly Ghost House 3 stories at front and fitzwater St. At one time, it was a captains house in the early 1700s their are some many tunnels under the old city. My father took us there when we were small .the tunnels were from the 1700s . When we saw these tunnels, we were small and me and my brothers and I couldn't remember how to get there, but we entered from a basement in old city

Well, in the 80's, I remember walking to Market Street entrance and there being an underground shopping mall thingy. It was dark and dirty but functional. Glad to see it has been improved. Same for center city Hall building. Don't go underground but I do drive around the Penn building (City Hall) still. Thanks for the video.

I don't.l know what they changed when they redid Dilworth Plaza, but you used to be able to get from 6th and Market street, up to 18th and JFK east and west and Cherry st to the Gayborhood north and south.
There is also an East/West concourse, but that is LONG abandoned, and I was never able to get in there.
Where that mosaic mural was in Suburban Station, I am pretty sure used to be the turf club.
8th Street is off/on pissy... But 11th street is where the bums congregate.
The reason 13th looks decent isn't really because of the Wanamaker building so much as 1234 Market is Septa's HQ 😉
