I don't ever play the middle two season until I come back 2-3 weeks before expansion. It's pretty straight forward to grab the seasonal questlines and play through them. Not saying the system doesn't need changes. But if you are getting lost as a veteran I dunno what to tell you. We been doing the same EXACT shit for 3 damn years. Apparently that changes this coming season though. So it might actually catch us out.

They need MyNameIsByf’s lore video (the one that’s 4hr’s long) as apart of the lore tab. A lot of new players don’t know about him who’d probably really end up loving the lore if they knew they could get an “all in one” video for it whenever they’d want that, without having to read it all from lore/items. Could even just have a link to his TH-cam vid or something. I know I didn’t get into the lore at all until a friend of mine told me about him, I ended up watching the video because all I had to do was listen and I’d get all of the important lore in one video. His video gave me all I needed to know to enjoy the game’s story and know where it was going.
This is an idea under the assumption that Bungie won’t make the lore easy to understand and follow for a new player. Which I don’t blame them, I don’t know what they should do to make the lore easy to be brought up to speed and follow.

Wow, that's the reason often times for a bit when starting Destiny I feel aimless. There's no starting point, or home. Your starting point is always kind of just.. Floating between things, literally in limbo between destinations.
If you want hear about the perspective from new players, I've had several who have played actively for months and get constantly lost been menus on where things are still. I've noticed personally that some of the UI is extremely.. Weird. One of the main places starts you in the character screen and you can go right or left, instead of being on a left to right or right to left format. On top of that, character is split from your quests. Which is the most common thing you'd want to get between. So you have to get out of character, open the other set of menus to scroll AWAY from destinations or even starting from map if you're at a location, just to get to the quests tab.
You don't go to your inventory too often, but for some reason it's right next to your character? There's so many menus to sift through and it DEFINITELY is convoluted for new players.

Loved the ideas this guy presents. One of the problems I have with destiny is it seeming like there is a lot of content on the director but come to find out it’s mostly filler. His way of grouping all the activities so it doesn’t overwhelm new players would be a good change. As far as your question about weather new players are reading the TWAB, I don’t think they even know such a thing exists. When I stared playing I had no understanding of what destiny even was. I only know about and keep up with the TWABs because of the videos you guys put out. So if they could add a way for people to even know such a thing exists it would be a great addition.

  • @QA2A
    @QA2A ปีที่แล้ว +3

Two things 1st I would have the same lobby type of screen for The Home screen so you do get to view your ship in orbit just listening to the background music because that is honestly a relaxing feature. So when you start the game it could show the ship fly in and then on the bottom it has Journeys tab which could take you to a larger version of what was shown and then a Guardian tab which would also be a larger version. Opacity could be an option to view the destination background or your emblem background.
2nd I would say it should be more like.
    Home, Store, Vault, Lore, News.
If it’s the news tab it’d probably get viewed at more since it’s right there rather than off to the side and it’d still show all things Destiny Related For the month/season, Updates, TWIDs, Upcoming sales, and whatever else is Bungie official. In the top left of the news tab is a link that takes you to the Bungie site to see all past Destiny news.

I like the design but I think the game is built this way because of the RPG feel they are trying capture. They might never do it because this is essentially putting everything into a start menu like Halo. Their vision from the start was obviously that you fly onto a planet and access the activities that are on the planet like an MMO. Although, they did this weird thing where they put everything into playlists now so the planets don’t matter. Which means this could probably work.

Alot of how they organize it is really to better optimize. These kind of videos are not good in my opinion because it's not that realistic on a game as big as Destiny. These kinds of videos in my opinion spread unrealistic ideas and it's quite disrespectful to the actual developing team as a whole.

Even if his ideas wouldn't work within the Destiny infrastructure, he does a fantastic job of highlighting how cumbersome the menus in Destiny are to navigate through - especially for new players. Only the devs truly know if something like this could be implemented, and I'd really hope they'd be open to constructive criticism like this, because it's not a well guarded secret, a minor flaw, or just a preference. New players are literally quitting due to the time investment of simply learning the menus, while veteran players often forget locations and lore. It's poorly streamlined.

I don't say that to shit on the creator, it's all good information. My main point is that any designer worth their weight in dog crap knows these things. Designers care about this stuff. High level executives who are totally disconnected from the experience and base most of their decisions of four or five metrics based on player engagement, retention and dollars spent in-game don't give a flying fuck about best practices surrounding UX. I was very confused on a few things, like weapon crafting and how it worked, along with some of the Leveling with the armor, and how to apply mods to the armor like Barrier, unstoppable, etc. I’ve played since Destiny 1 Beta. Love the game, but definitely need breaks for other games, etc.

Idk about you guys but my favorite part of a new video game is being completely lost and overwhelmed. Slowly you start to grasp and put it all together in your mind. I remember my dad brought home a bunch of games from a guy at work. I saw this game Elder Scrolls Morrowind. I was at the first little town with that lost and scared feeling. I almost turned it off and said thats too much i cant figure all that out. But i didnt. I pushed through and a year later i found myself wishing i could have that feeling back.
I found it with a few games. Then came destiny. Crota just came out and i got it and did the first little area. I walked out to the cosmodrome and the spider tank fell and the fallen ship flew overhead. I was like yep this is it. This is my game. I had that same overwhelming feeling and it was great.
That's how life is btw. Everyone is lost and the best feeling in the world is finding your way through the darkness. Its beautiful and what it means to be alive.

2:50 I was a new player for Witch Queen. Absolutely it was hell to try and understand ANYTHING going on, story or endgame progression or getting gear/exotics. None of it is ever explained and everything is just constant convoluted menu's. I gave it an honest try and got myself up to the season's pinnacle gear light level, but I just dropped it after awhile when I realized I still had no idea what to do next and I was just grinding weekly pinnacle gear and logging off.
Story cutscenes from multiple expansions would play one after the other when I would just visit the tower or a planet.
All the hidden exotics were just meh when it took so long to grind the catalyst only to need weeks of grinding to unlock the catalyst to use it.
Stasis literally still took WEEKS to unlock and grind, which was only available AFTER doing the story quests, something the game never tells you.
And dungeons were basically just me getting carried because there is no in game explanation for ANY of it, not even a dungeon journal.

What I also think it will give us the feeling of a new game would be the ability to use our ship as our central node, similar to what warframe has been always doing, that will even give our ship a purpose, we could have crafting in there, navigation, vault, bounties, etc... and we can still go to the tower for other stuff like events or specific quests, selling/buying, etc.
I think it would be great to have different interiors or modules that you can upgrade, modify, and whatever else we can imagine. If you have played Warframe you probably know what I mean. it will save us from those eternal loading times, having to go to a different place for crafting, to another place for specific bounties, etc.

  • @nightismonochrome
    @nightismonochrome ปีที่แล้ว +1

I might be biased, but to me, seeing and hearing the ship flying in once you load in brings a greater feeling of life to the game. Orbit. Free floating and ready to go wherever you want. Paired with the orbit soundtrack, it's a good feeling I'm not sure how to describe. Seeing your friend's ships fly in, and once your activity loads you all fly off and warpdrive...
Improvements can be made, but I do still prefer the current destination layout, as deciding what to do is navigating a map, rather than simply text. It feels more organic, since we're navigating spaces, not just menus with lists of game modes. How I see it, we're fast travelling to destinations, going "here" to do "this". Let that sink in.
I do agree that for newer players, finding dungeons and raids is tricky since they'll need to locate them on the respective destination, but it reinforces associating the activity to said destination. It gives a greater sense of world building, rather than just activities with a themed "setting". Do it once or twice, and they'll know it's on "this" planet. Find it on the map, instead of search for it in the list. Again, let that sink in.

2:26 these are both flat-out wrong unless you count loading times (in the case of the 35 seconds to reach the destination screen). You press a button to enter the game, choose your character, load into orbit, and Destinations is right there. From there, there is a maximum of two screens and 3 button presses required to begin an activity. Those buttons absolutely do not take 35 seconds to press.

What if the “home page” was inside of your ship. Kind of like your own personal tower. A small space for quickly moving around. A closet location for character customization. An armory location for the vault where you can organize weapons based on type, and maybe even have your ten most used/favorites displayed. The current director page would appear on the ships front facing window when you sit in the captains seat. You then select where you want to go and you take off. And whatever else you want to add to the “home page” could simply be added inside of the ship. A journey book could be somewhere in there. An eververse computer where you can shop. You could invite friends onto your ship, customize it with items from eververse. I would spend gobs. The possibilities are endless. This would be an excellent compliment in game to the tower and would maintain destiny’s vibe while making things easier to access.

I think it’d be even cooler that the first screen you see is the cockpit of your ship, with all the menus built into the screens of your cockpit. The design of cockpit changes also as you change your ship. You see your ghost and it gives random voice prompts on what you can do or just some lore related chitchat. Or if you collected some trinkets from missions you can have it on your dash, with the ghost having related comments like, “we really ought to return that rock to Eris morn”… Also as you change gear/loadout, you also get to see it in the ship. So you see cool effects and armor details. The menu consolidation can still happen, but it’ll be cool to be presented like what I described so the immersion is a lot stronger. We always only see the ship from third person POV, and that kinda sucks. If bungie really wants to charge money for ships, I think it’s not too much to ask for them to create the cockpit too.

The UI in Destiny definitely works in some way to make sure you value your monetisation.
The reason the first screen is the way it is, is because it shows you your eververse ship or your fireteam's eververse ship to confirm or reinforce your purchase (or RNG).
The reason why the tower exists the way it does is so you show off eververse (or raid/dungeon) items to everyone.
It's crazy to see that they are finally adding Vault in the main menu after all these years and after all this community demand. It's a huge win for non DIM users. Now we wait to see if they are going to move bounties there also, but then, the micro-transaction positive reinforcement chamber will no longer be of use and will be relegated to regular activities where it's rare you go above 6players.
Same reasoning for why Store and season pass rank are layed out the way it is. The question now is, how much of it is fundamental to the structure of the game and how much of the UI can be changed without overlapping changes to the whole overarching system?

The menus are absolutely horrible, and nothing is explained. 1 or 2 weeks in was very near to giving up. Simply because of the horrible experience. Not only because of the menus but so much more, no explanations of anything! No guide, nothing!
Only the gameplay just kept me in.
With a little help of a friend, it slowly started to make sense, and now, a month beyond that point.
I am completely hooked on destiny! It's an amazing game once you know what you are doing. I have been gaming for 37 years, and this is by far the most beginner unfriendly game i ever played! But eventually, also one of the best games i ever played!
I think many potentially new players never go beyond 2 weeks and then walk away.

This sounds counterintuitive, but a BIG problem for players trying to navigate things for the first time is having the same thing in multiple places. Seasonal Challenges, for example, have three separate ways to access them. You can go from the Journey screen, the quest screen, and the Season screen. If you navigate by *landmarks*, it is harder to learn where things are if your landmark shows up in different ways, in different places. And then, there is also the illogical grouping, where those seasonal challenges land in BOTH branches of the menu. Triumphs, on the other hand, are like quests, but they're not on the same branch as quests, but rather next to your character's equipment and drip, the latter of which you can buy from the Store, which is over with the maps.
I also like the menus being framed as simple questions instead of vague categories. Does Journey mean where you travel to other places? No, that's Destinations, which is not even in that menu branch. By the way, that also isn't the same as the Map tab. That is for the planetary map, rather than the Solar System.

Once that is implemented add a way to see where real players are at on the map. This will make other players try to play world content, allow other players to play the content with you, similar to lost sectors. Have more animated icons that let the player know “try this in this planet”. Also allow the option to see where your friends are on the planets, have a blinking icon per player. When in a group also have a blinking icon to show where your teammates are on the map.

I get what he's pitching about the character section. As it stands, we have to go through half a dozen screens to change char/view loadout/change lo/mods/appearance, etc. His vision consolidates everything into one space, which is conveniently located in the home section where we will also have access to our vaults, thankfully. The last thing I want to do is load into half a dozen different pages and THEN have to pick a social space where I can finally go to the vault to get my inventory in check..where I will have to re-enter on the subsequent character before I can even boot up an activity. It's genius. I share the sentiment of it needing more love.
We also could use a larger, and universal post master, for that matter..for the same reason the character/vault interaction needs change.

Instead of a character menu on the right I think a tracker of what you’ve done in a given timeframe would be nice. Such as daily-weekly-seasonally

This guy brings up such a good point. I know all the screens and how to get around, but there are just so many of them it isn't anything like sensible or convenient. And amidst traversing a dozen screens to get to what I want, I do make misclicks and end up adding to my trip. It must be such a wall to a new person who doesn't know it in the first place.

I LOVE this guy. This is what a good perspective of change looks like. And I’ve been trying to put into words what this game could really do with. This guy did that, flawlessly.

What’s wrong with gambit? I like pvp. But when I want a break from hardcore I do gambit. What are some good suggestions to replace it with?

I'm a long time veteran and this has really started to stand out to me from starting to play warframe and seeing how fast it is to get into content
It's also pretty easy to see less-destiny focused players getting bored in these screens and interacting with things like the helm

Trying to tell my new light friend how to simply mark a quest to track, was one of the hardest experiences I've had in a while. Telling them which tab to shuffle to, and how to navigate there was just tough for no reason.

How hard would it be to have the twab text in game somewhere? I was punished for not reading the twab and over 3,000 Iron Banner tokens were removed from my inventory. At no point in time anywhere IN GAME did it state these would be removed. You had to read the twab to know this was happening.

i'm in a discord server with someone who tried playing D2 for the first time this weekend, no experience with D1, last bungie game was Reach, etc. The experience for them, in trying to figure out anything is a nightmare. They regularly had to use their phone to search up basic functions of the game because there's little in the way of ingame explanation.

I would add a tab for clan/social up top, delete the customize character options (it’s only one click already so adding cursor movement makes this option worse) but keep a small swap character button in the bottom right. Pinned quest information could be shown in the bottom left and the what’s to play/what can i do should basically look like the vanguard, crucible, gambit, and legends icons except I would do vanguard, crucible, planets/locations, and legends: containing all the raids/dungeons. Have them orbit around the traveler and you could add another for seasonal content as well

Overwatch 2 puts their 'patch notes' on a menu selection screen when you push start. They have the whole patch note breakdown readable in game. Really dope.

the new ui changes proposed would be amazing, i've had multiple friends who started destiny and quit before they even reached the tower because of how much shit bungie throws at them right from the start, by the end you have 0 idea what to do

I think it's a good brainstorming idea, but not sure clustering information is any more or less overwhelming for new players. This menu is not any more intuitive than the current system, but it is less screens. I think it's a start

I agree with this 💯 another cool QOL update would be to be able to see what buffs/debuffs you can apply with the current equipped loadout on your character customization screen.

I'd add more to the "Lore Archive" tab. Say, call it the "Forge Lore" tab. And the whole of its contents is every weapon and armor piece that the player has collected, that has Lore tied to it (ex. Ace of Spades or Cromatic Fire). Also each having their respective sub-tabs to indicate specific items and what grade of item (ex. Forge Lore- Weapons- Exotic- Hand Cannons- The Last Word). Then Click on PC, or press Selection Button on Controller, and you will be presented with a fully rendered image of the item you're looking at, and the full passage of the selected item's Lore.

A “what to do” suggestion tab for story and content makes a lot of sense and something I’ve been saying for years that D2 has needed.
After the new light campaign the next story related content a player is missing is paid DLC, I’m really surprised Bungie doesn’t try to guide a player into the opening mission (that’s been free in recent DLC) as a chance to get the new player to buy the rest of that expansion. And keep guiding them through. Just as suggestions. Not that they can’t access anything else, like the newest expansion campaign first, but that if they wanted an idea of “what next?” After reaching the Tower they have some idea.
