If you liked this video, I recommend watching part two of this series where we finally take off from Fiji! th-cam.com/video/RbsWaDTK6wk/w-d-xo.html
Would you go sailing? Would you go so far as an ocean crossing? 💜

I learnt to sail in Britany, France, where I come from, when I was teenager. I thought sailing was for the wealthy but I can say now it’s not exactly the case. I’m a a proud owner of a NZ made 1972 Allan Wright Variant. Definitely not a SuperYacht but I’m leaning so much with it and having some great fun. I’ve been sailing with RPNYC Wellington as a racing crew. Such a learning curve but the social aspect it’s very cool. Sailing is such a strong community. I like your videos.awesome content. Keep it up

Hey man! So glad you enjoyed the episode! What a cool place to learn how to sail! Have you ever gone back as an adult and sailed there again? That would be a fun experience! 💜

It's in my bones for sure! Never thought I'd be a sailor, but it turns out quite a few of my family members are sailors! 💜💜💜

Back when I lived in Fl. my brother had a sailing boat and belonged to a Sailing Club. Part of the clubs charter said that one evening per week they provided non sailors and less moneyed folks an opportunity to sail in the bay. We had a lot of fun , met some great people and often times were asked to crew for other boats in more serious races.
As time went on we were asked to help deliver boats to various places. Got to spend some time off shore , some of it good and some not so much.
As we aged we decided we were "Bay Sailors" . Meaning we liked to be home at night in a dry bed that was not constantly moving.

I feel that last bit in particular. Having both lived on a boat and then being forced back to land life, I very much appreciate and treasure my baths and kitchen. 😅💜

You can also do a learn to sail course (I did it at RPNYC in wellington, back in 2003!) probably better than just learning on people/friend's boats because being a good sailor doesn't automatically make you a good teacher aswell.
It's a shame that you can't hire a boat like you can book a batch (except the very high end) so although there is a huge surplus of boats that don't get taken out much as they should, getting on one of those boats basically means either you or your friend owning one. I think this is because there is basically no requirements for a private pleasure vessel, but very strict legal requirements for a commercial pleasure vessel

That's a very good point about how not everyone is a good teacher. One thing I would add to that, having taken both levels 1 and 2 yachting NZ courses, sailing with multiple captains can have the same impact as taking a course, and its heaps cheaper. That said, you will learn faster with a course, and be sure not to miss anything. 💜

    good one
I would take you on as crew you have a good idea of what is involved you would be an asset.
In NZ sailing is for every one not just the rich .
I have undertaken only one race the coastal classic. Someone at work crewed in the boat and they needed ballast.
We won our class on handicap .The experience was a blast .
When I certified for cat one the surveyor specified i must have some one with offshore experience.
The crew man I found did not recognize my place as skipper it made the journey far more stressful than it should have been.
It is transactional When you "interview"" the skipper you are also giving good indication as to your value as crew with both the knowledge needed to ask good question's and your priority's as crew member.
    .

Yup, love that last bit, it shows what your priorities are too. And it also sets clear expectations!
Any plans to go offshore in the next season? 💜

Hey, love your vids, got a question do you know what the cut off age to become a New Zealand citizen is. I want to retire to New Zealand and I am currently 53 this year.

One thing to note though, NZ is a hard place to make friends, and if you’re no longer working, I imagine this to be even harder.💜
