@Dominic Scalia Depends. Last season of Vikings I surely was more rooting for Alfred and Ubbe than anyone else. I agree with you to the extent that christianity united whole of Europe, and vikings did convert. It's no accident. Modern people lack that gratitude for our forefathers culture traditions and belief system only to see the negative side. They destroy the ground on which our society was built on. Pure nihilism. But some do appreciate it while rooting for vikings now and then ! And not seeing evil white christians males. Isn't it a christian quality to be able to put yourself at someone else's place ? Even pagan ! It's like a line from Ecbert, close to this : "people tend to forget that not so long ago we were pagan too". And totally agree with the emotion thing.
Eckbert destroyed the farming settlement because his people were disturbed by the blood sacrifice Lagretha performed in front of the English nobility. He did it to placate the Christian sensitivities of his people. Once that bloody sacrifice was performed there was no way for coexistence even though it was an animal. There was just too much of a cultural divide at that point. Eckbert also used the situation to purge all of the noblemen who supported the slaughter of the innocent settlers while absolving his son of the murders once they were alone. Great plan until Ragnar comes looking for revenge.
I should watch it again and read up on local customs, but sacrifices were/are still pretty common to bless new land after christianisation. In my view he was showing his strength to the other Anglo-Saxon realms and get them all in line.
When you think about it, Aelle had every right to kill Ragnar. Just think about it, Ragnar's men attacked, raped, pillaged, destroyed his land and people for no reason. The only reason we are on Ragnars side is because the show is from his perspective.
Fair point but IRL the Vikings almost certainly invaded as a response to Christian missionaries proselytizing in their countries, so the Christians started it from the Vikings' POV.
For no reason? You do realize that before Ragnar there were viking traders along the English shores peacefully trading until Christians came and killed them all for no reason?
The reason for the settlement’s destruction was that Ecbert could dispose of the nobles who questioned his leadership and at the same time, not have to worry about the Vikings being on his lands. His backup for when Ragnar showed up pissed off was Magnus, who turned out not to be his son.
Blood Eagle wasn't some honourable sacrifice or execution, it was just a very cruel and horrible way to die. However, it was believed by the Norse(Vikings) that if the person being sacrificed, didn't scream, they would be allowed to feast among the gods in Valhalla.
Aella's the good guy. He didn't go to other people's lands, steal their holy relics, their treasure, and murder their people. He is quite literally defending himself, and we're supposed to be angry with him for getting his completely justified revenge on the perpetrator of these heinous crimes.
Yeah, I wasn't mad at Aelle for this. I was sad that Ragnar died because he was a brilliant character, but logically speaking, he *was* the villain here.
@@adam-uy6qg Indeed, but we are talking about Aelle, king of Northumbria, who was defeated by the great heathen army. Though the first Aelle is a pretty interesting dude, first Bretwalda. Probably didn't exist unfortunately.

blood eagle in itself was not honorable. Yes it was reserved for kings and he was a king but it would only be an honorable death if you did not scream but died in silence. Then you would get to enter Valhalla. But to King Aella I am pretty sure they only did it to cause as much pain as possible because he was a Christian king and would not be allowed in Valhalla anyway.

Even the ancient Egyptians had chariots, so way before Rome.
