I've always loved Treasure Map as a card for how it functions, but I've never thought of how the flip cards of Ixalan tell a story. Really cool video! And I definitely hope it gets reprinted soon along with other treasure cards...
I really appreciated that in this episode Patrick seems to slow down a little bit, it just feels a bit less frantic in the intro compared to first few episodes. I don't know if is the result of comments or just getting into the swing of the series generally. As always though, Patrick's insight into Magic continues to be top notch and valuable to even someone like me who isn't a game designer by any means.
I really like this series, hopefully you get to keep it going! I have always been drawn to Treasure Map's design and gameplay patterns. It's really fun to activate and "dig" for treasure. Your analysis is spot on.
Love the series and this card. The power level of Treasure Map was just so perfect for standard. You were never embarrassed to play it, but it wasn't too strong.
Honestly I think a lot of Ixalan design is super underrated: got a card that is too good? Slap Ascend on it! (effectively delays powerful abilities on cards until ~turn 7 or later when players are more accepting of game ending effects) Want to encourage combat in a way that is more compelling than "when attacks?" Slap Enrage on it! Land ramp is just too dang good and keeps breaking standard how do we fix it? Explore! And finally as explained in the video, got a rare with an ability that is needed for balance or set cohesion but is boring/frustrating on its own? Slap Transform on it!
Would love to hear your thoughts on Opposition - one of my favorite cards when playing back in the day, but looking back, it feels like it does all the wrong things. Love the series!

I love when overlooked, innocuous cards become hallmark accomplishments when viewed with some intention.
Awesome video, Patrick. Love this kind of stuff bite-sized design stuff! :D

Maybe the best video to date in this series, great stuff! And that stinger...
Commenting for the juice. (And because I love Patrick's work.)
Thanks for the content! I would've never guessed Treasure Map, but it was fun to revisit
Somewhere in the middle of all these episodes, I hope one time he wears a full tuxedo with white gloves and a monocle

Christ, shots fired. What did Brad do?

Love this card works great in my heliod list
need to hear more about this Upper Deck thing... 😉😉
Excellent
Looking forward to some more p sully
Treasure map is so much more interesting and thematic than something like mazemind tome
Tome is super efficient and designed to hedge vs Aggro in best-of-1's on Magic Arena I think.
@@whatdothlife4660 its not a bad design per se and it fills it roles pretty well, it’s just less evocative and dynamic than map was.
Please tell me next week is going to be the ravenous chupacabra rant 2.0
Some suggestions: Ichor Slick, Life from the Loam, Ravenous Chupacabra, Cryptic Command
Good stuff.
It's not very clear, but I think Patrick is hinting that he likes this card a lot.
Love this
I've been playing since 1994 and I never connected graveyards with deep water (a la Azcanta).
Good video
Week number 2 of trying to get Patrick Sullivan to go over Aether Vial
Let's get him to talk about, why Oko ist a great Planeswalker Kappa
Second comment. Gotta JUICE THOSE NUMBERS!

Worst design of all time? I'm guessing its Bridge from Below.
Worst design? Ravenous Chupacabra rant incoming?
