I was wondering that. I remember a number of years ago watching a race on the TV at somewhere like Market Rasen. I think because of the low sun they would have to bypass the first two fences. The commentator then said that they'd bypass the third fence as you can't have an open ditch as the first fence. Valentine's is definitely not the first fence in 2012 (nor in 2017) so maybe the rule changed in between.
What a spectacular fall at the 3rd fence as the jockey catapulted over the open ditch. Awesome

What a horse, what a ride. Tragically, the horse suffered a mortal injury the following year.

Valentines is a brook not an open ditch.
James Vaughan well basically it’s simply a 5 foot fence with a 5 foot 6 inch brook.
