A New Pot for my Jade, The Bonsai Zone, Dec 2021

  • My Jade (Crassula) bonsai got too top heavy and tipped out of the pot. I'm putting it in a new pot that will suit it much more!
    I'm planting a Tiger Bark Ficus cutting into the old pot from the Jade.

    It’s amazing how small the root system is for a jade that big. What interesting plants

    • @emmitstewart1921
      @emmitstewart1921 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's a major factor in growing jades. The root system is so small, and the leaves are so heavy with all the water they store that balancing pot and plant can be a big problem. The plants are so easy to grow in other respects, and when they bloom, they are so beautiful that they are worth the trouble.

    • @Thimbrethil
      @Thimbrethil 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My jades do the same. I discovered that they are more stable and grow roots better if the soil is finer, for example with some addition of sand. But anyway, I don’t cut rootbase on them, hardly ever.

    What a lovely combo of plant and pot, they really compliment eachother. I didn't even realize jades could flower like that! I have a little grewia that I have to plant in my cream coloured Ray pot in the spring! I'm not brave or experienced enough to try repotting at this time of the year! lol

    I enjoyed this. Perfect timing. I recently repotted a very large jade gifted to me. In order to fit it in the pot I selected, I needed to achieve shallow roots. It was necessary for me to cut a very long thick tap root, and cut away hard roots as you have done here. Thanks for sharing, yours looks great in its new pot!

    I have two thanksgiving cacti. One was a red and white plant from Walmart, and the other is a Samba Brazil I got online. Samba Brazil has bright yellow and scarlet flowers. When it blooms it reminds me of Mardi Gras in Rio. When you mentioned the spines on your Christmas cactus, I went and checked mine. There they were. The spines are so tiny and soft, I had never noticed them.

My jade that given to me as farwell gift from my wife's friend that had to move far away is about four or five years old with a bit of silver sorta has flaky bark and barley has any leaves, it never produced any flowers and grown only a few inches since I've acquired it.

      Yes I do, if they are healthy and getting bushy. Indoor growth is usually courser and with larger leaves, so much of it gets reduced once summer comes again!

    wow, such a large amount of foliage on the Ficus cutting, I have had some success with soft wood cuttings from my large ficus which has since had two new trees develop from it but never a cutting that size. Are they really that easy? For somebody without a greenhouse when should I attempt that?

  • @MissChelle

    Hi. I have a jade plant that looks very similar. It’s still in the original pot I first put it in around 15 years ago. It was hidden outside in the garden & I have only just found it again after moving house. It’s not a bonsai, but I would like to try & convert it to a large bonsai style. It’s trunk is at least 10cm across , and is very top heavy. I’m thinking a boab style like your other video I just watched, but not so small. My question is, should I leave it in the pot that it is currently growing happily in (30cm ) or should I repot it? I don’t want to kill it and I have zero bonsai experience. Do you have any advice? I’m in Australia 🇦🇺❤️

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it's happy in the current pot, I would just work on the pruning. Repotting can always come later after the tree is recovered and growing well!

    I’m at a point of needing to decide what to do with my jades. The canopies are starting to look too big for the thickness of the trunk. But I can’t bring myself to do a hard chop on them. Any advice? I’ve never made a drastic cut like that and I’m concerned.

    • @OliverJazzz
      @OliverJazzz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've chopped mine a few times, I'd recommend doing it in springtime to be safe, and for the cuttings to take well. That said, I've never had huge problems with mine, even if I live very North and don't use much growlights. I just water extremely little in the winter.

    • @Taylor314T5
      @Taylor314T5 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OliverJazzz thanks. I have plenty of cuttings, you know how it is haha. But I’ll give ‘em a way. If I really chop it back, they’ll be little bonsai trees in their own right haha.

      @@OliverJazzz sorry, I missed your response some how. Thank you.
      I’ll hold off until spring, though I keep them indoors under lights anyway. I have been working on the ramification of branches for a while, it seems like such a shame and backwards decision to chop the branches off. 😩
