When it comes to most rain pants, they tend to have longer inseams. These pants have shorter inseams which means better fit….for myself at least. Some people like longer inseams; it’s a personal preference thing so keep this in mind before purchasing.
These pants are indeed waterproof as I have worn them in some knock down thunderstorms. Very light weight, great quality, won’t take up much room in your pack and are perfect for spring, summer and fall. For the winter months I tend to do with more technical laminate materials like Goretex. In other words, stronger materials that can handle the abrasive nature of ice.
Perfect for those who are looking to cut weight from their loud outs while not sacrificing protection from the rain.
When it comes to cost, $80 is just about right for the materials. Similar products are around the same range price wise.

I'm always a big fan of quality channels like yours Luke, and always like it when we are shown the positives AND the negatives in product reviews. Many just rave about how great stuff is and don't even touch on the negative side of things.
Trust+++ for you mate and that goes a long way.

What I really like is how long this dude uses gear before he reviews. Thanks for mentioning how hard they are to get off. These seem best for a fast and light shoe wearing through hike type situation.

Very informative review. I have no need whatsoever for pant pockets in the backcountry, since I have either a fanny pack or packback. But your suggestion about the longer ankle zip is the crux of the whole convenience issue with an impending downpour or rapidly developing snowy trail situation as you gain altitude.

Good review. A nice set of light weight rain gear that packs up small. Yeah, pockets would be nice or zippered slits. Appreciate it Luke. atb Opal

Knew you would like these pants Luke. I am still wearing the large 5.68oz / 161g. I don't mind the lack of pockets, if you are wearing both the jacket and pants (12.23oz / 347.7g) you have 2 anyhow. Fewer pockets equals fewer ounces. Till this day I still try to put my hands inside the missing jacket pockets..... lol

Great video as always friend. I do want to let you and everyone else know to take outdoor research's claim as waterproof lightly. Last March I was at Tricorner knob on the Appalachian Trail sleeping in their "waterproof" helium bivy, when it stormed. It rained for about 3-4 hours. After 1 hour water was coming through the waterproof fabric, and it sucked. Then the temp dropped to about 30 degrees. I almost died. I will never trust outdoor research, or their products again. That's my fault to a degree for not properly testing gear that I will be trusting my life with. Also I wouldn't of thought to test the bivy out in the shower for hours straight, as I shouldn't have to. I want everybody to know to be careful as to what gear they buy, and watch out for this company. Stay away.

I really Love Outdoor Research, I have these pants an jacket and many other different kinds, they can get very expensive, like the Mentor Pants, but they are very convenient, i always pack them even if its sunny, when it starts pouring out of nowheres i can throw them on very fast, great products. about the zippers not being high enough, they have other pants that the zippers go half way up to well above the knees, the Foray Pants, thats what i dont like about the helium pants aswell, it takes some time to take your shoes off just to take off the pants, pretty annoying. -Jake

OR Helium or the Marmot PreCip, what pants preform better. Breathable, waterproof, ease of putting on and taking off, pack ability and quality.
    Thank You!

What boots you were using to sit so carelessly in water? I mean what type, not the exact model: watertight, breathable, quick dry?

That price is insane just for water proof pants.I can remember just 10 years ago the price of such things were so cheaper so todays price is proof of hyper inflation in this country.

These are designed to be light, light, light. All the extras you say would be nice to have would be nice to have, but would make them heavier! Then they lose their market advantage. But it's good that you point out the lack of the niceties, in case folks think they can get those AND that light weight.

+Shadowman Hey there Shadowman, YKK stands for Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha which roughly translates as Yoshida Company. YKK makes incredibly dependable zippers and that is why they are so popular.
      Take care my friend.

US, size 10, is European size 9,... so you have quite large feet in relation to your height I guess. One tip I was given for getting feet into snug wetsuits, was to put my foot into a plastic shopping bag first, then it slips down the leg of the wetsuit more easily. I wonder if this would help at all when trying to pull your boot out of the Helium Pants,.... I'll see if I can remember to try it next time I use my waterproof over trousers, and given it's been raining and I have to walk the dogs again this afternoon, I guess it won't be long :-)
