Thanks! Mine was showing code 34. It had no soot and barely any visable oxidation. Once I carefully cleaned it off with a steel wool brush it worked perfectly! For anyone wondering the slightest build up naked to the eye made mine quit working. I couldn't believe it. Last year it was the ignitor, and this year the flame sensor. My furnace inducer motor is kicking on and off repeatedly but nothing else will kick on..any clue what this issue is? I think it’s something simple but I can’t figure it out. 15 degrees here…if I can’t figure it out I’m going to call a tech tomorrow
The flame sensor signal is very small measured at approx. 4-7 micro amps DC. Any oxidation or the build up of mercaptan on the sensing rod will impede this signal and shut off the gas valve circuit on flame failure. Keeping it clean with a few light passes of very fine steel wool is the best prevention.

You are a lifesaver. I noticed the heat wasn’t kicking on and the flame would only ignite for like 10 seconds then shut off. I removed the filter to make sure it wasn’t an airflow issue and it still happened. The flame light on the control board would blink when the flame was on. I cleaned the flame sensor with some sandpaper and reinstalled, now the flame stays on and the light on the board is solid instead of blinking so I think it worked. Seriously huge thanks to you for saving me the money and headache.
So happy to help, and AWESOME JOB making it a DIY project. That’s so cool that the sandpaper trick solved the issue. Hopefully many stress free days ahead for you. 😎👍
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders Yea I didn’t have a metal wire brush so I just figured sandpaper would work in a pinch! I only sanded enough to remove the soot and expose fresh metal.

Just a word of caution; If your heat goes off and if the temperature outside is freezing, DO NOT WAIT. Get it fixed ASAP. You run the risk of freezing your water pipes in the walls. Then that turns into a much more expensive Horror show.

This is indeed a very common issue. You can also use fine grit sand paper to clean the sensor rod. I find it’s more effective than the brush as it covers more surface area in a single stroke, and you can modulate the grinding pressure more easily as well.

Interesting, I can’t tell on my unit which part of two is the flame sensor. Theres two possibilities. But my heater sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. It seems to work after turning my system off for a bit and then turning it back on. So now I’m wondering if my thermostat control limits how many times my heater can turn on in a given amount of time, like an hour. I’ve heard that some systems have controls to set the limits on how many times a heater or AC could turn on in an hour or so.
Thanks for watching, that’s definitely a possibility. In the meantime, are any of your floor vents throughout your home covered in any way? All it takes is one floor vent to be covered by a rug or a dresser, causing a backflow of air pressure that the furnace can detect and lead to a system shut down for safety purposes.
will the linked part replacement work on all furnaces? I cleaned mine today, but it did not have an angle like the one in this video- just a straight metal piece. Anyways, the cleaning didn’t work:( wondering if I should order this piece or hire a pro
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. Heat is very important this time of year. 😀 Hope all is well with you and your family, enjoy that warm home. 😎👍🔧🔩
No brush guys you don’t wanna scratch that. Use a dollar bill or a piece of the finest wet dry sandpaper that sold that’s just about like smooth paper you don’t wanna scratch that ride or will start collecting carbon and dust and dirt and everything on it which causes the problem.
Very cool & thanks for sharing this. Great job finding & cleaning the corroded electrical connection point George. Definitely a rewarding feeling getting your DIY project completed...not to mention a warm home. 😀 Let us know if you have any questions.
My themostat accidently got switched from heat to cool. After awhile; when I noticed it, I put it in the off position, then later on heat. Now, quite often, it will start then stop after just a couple seconds. Could the switch from heat to cool have messed something up?
Is it not odd that the blower comes on well before the inducer does? The inducer has failsafes on it which cause same issue but i always thought it would turn on the inducer to clear any residual in the exchanger then establish flame to heat the exchanger finally turning on the blower so it doesnt blow a bunch of cold air in..
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders filter is pretty knew. I had it all off for about a day and figured I’d just give it a shot again after cleaning it some more… voila! It’s working now. Not sure if I just didn’t clean it well enough the first time or not

So mine is making a loud bang when it shuts off I seriously don't know if it's always done that I've only lived here for 4 months and you know it's just now winter so you would think I'd know but is this normal?
Good morning, we are drinking our morning coffee answering any and all questions for the DIY community. This is usually caused by a worn out blower fan mount. The large blower fan can begin spinning in a slightly offset manner while furnace is running. After furnace turns off, the blower fan begins to wind down and once at a slower rotation speed, it sometimes hits the mount and makes a bang or clunk sound.
I have this exact set up on my gas furnace. I pulled out the flame sensor and cleaned it. Its throwing a code: 6 steady light flashes. My furnace turns on and heat then shuts off. Flashing 6 light code. I changed the flame sensor with a brand new one. Can you help me with this??? Thanks :)

Thank you! Fixed my furnace.

No brush guys you don’t wanna scratch that. Use a dollar bill or a piece of the finest wet dry sandpaper that sold that’s just about like smooth paper you don’t wanna scratch that ride or will start collecting carbon and dust and dirt and everything on it which causes the problem.
My flame sensor was clean but the electrical connector had corrosion. So i used emery cloth on the both sides of the connection, this cured my problem.
Very cool & thanks for sharing this. Great job finding & cleaning the corroded electrical connection point George. Definitely a rewarding feeling getting your DIY project completed...not to mention a warm home. 😀

You’re the man

Thanks :)

What's the ohm's supposed to be if u wanted to test it to see if it's bad or not.
Thanks for watching, if you test for ohm’s…if there is any reading at all above zero, it’s likely still a good working part.
