It's pretty incredible. The human brain doesn't like to be confused about what it's sensing, so it'll fill in gaps where things don't line up. VR brings you just far enough into the game's world for your brain to go "Yeah, this is reality! Feels a little wonky, but I can fix that!"
another way to simulate a campfire in vr without lighting a fire indoors is just getting an IR lamp and pointing it at your sleeping area, feels 100% exactly the same as fire/sunlight (because all 3 give warmth through infrared) and is also just kinda a nice way to stay warm in general cuz idk it just kinda feels nicer having the feeling of a campfire/the sun while playing vr

I once took a nap in Breezehome in Skyrim VR, lining up the bed perfectly with the bed in my room. I remember waking up after half an hour and looking up at the roof of Breezehome. There were 0.5 seconds of pure bliss mixed with absolute panic, where it felt real. I know it sounds dumb, but my smooth brain remembers those .5 secs as an incredible and real experience.
I've fallen asleep in Skyrim VR twice. Once I played immersively for a few hours and then stopped at the inn and had some drinks (and had some in real life at the same time), then I rented a room and I lined up the virtual bed with a place to lay down IRL, and I went to sleep in the tavern. I fell asleep for a bit and then woke up in the bed in the tavern, and it was an amazing experience. The other time it was really late at night and I was in the woods, and a storm came through, so I laid in the grass and looked up at the storm, and dozed off for a bit. Woke up in the grass in the middle of the night. Very cool experiences.
