Hi guys. While sitting here responding to some of the comments, I watched the video again myself and it's qiven me a kick in the butt to get the next update out.
There has been some progress made on the vehicle since that I would like to share and a few gremlins that have shown up during the 10-15000 km iv done since this post.
I am stoked that this project is attracting some attention and am keen to answer some of the technical questions as well
Please feel free to reply to this post with some info you would like us to add to the next update video.

Hey guys. Thanks for the follow and the comments. I have taken a bit of a brake on this build due to a job change and a bike accident, but I am happy to say that we will be continuing and completing this build very soon.
I have driven over 10 000km since the last bit of work was done.... This has revealed a few issues that need to be addressed, mostly with regards to heat shielding and fasteners coming loose.

I’m doing a big turbo upgrade on my b5 1.8t, what tuner should I get and where can I find it?

It's great to see the progress on the B5. Nice job!
Is there a reason why Ray didn't use the kdFi ECU?
The only thing keeping me from switching to a free programmable ECU is the lack of knock detection with automatic ignition adjustment.

      Thanks for following Diago.
I actually never heard about that ecu until you mentioned it. It looks like quite a nice setup. I am not sure if it is the case with the kdFI in particular, but since megasquirt is open source and the likes of speeduino (also open source) has been gaining momentum and daugterboards have become quite freely available, and board origination becoming is easier, there are more and more of these plug n play options becoming available. Great to see. Also using the tunerstudio software.
To answer the question on the ms3x though... Based on specs and feature for feature, I think this ecu offered more features and online community than any of the other options availabe anywhere near the same pricepoint. (yet to be proven through this podcast series as we unlock features one at a time 😋).... A little bit more PT to get it wired into the oem harness than the pnp versions....(i hope to help take the black magic out of that process as well) . But, now that it is in I have endless tuning features available as the car requires them.
Knock sensing and closed loop ignition is available on this ecu, but requires a add on module... Definately something that i will be exploring at some stage. Along with closed loop boost control, flat change, launch control, traction control, onboard data logging, spare inputs to monitor things like fuel and oil pressure, individual cylinder egt for "per cylinder" trimming etc.
Been one hell of a learning curve.... But so far so good, and hopefully this is useful for anyone else attempting something similar.

@@raymonster2 Thank you very much for all these details. Didn't know MS3x had all these features, I'll have to look into it more now.

    • @raymonster2
      @raymonster2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Good day Yul. Thanks for the comment. It took a bit of work to cross reference the OEM harness to the new ecu, fortunately I have good electrical and electronic experience so with a bit of head scratching and measuring I was able to sort this out by myself. I have kept careful notes on all of this and would be happy to share this info for a fellow enthusiast.... Will you also be using ms3x ?

Hi guys, glad I discovered this series. Any further progress on this build? I’ve been a B5 1.8T owner for 20+ years. AJL 132kw with MTM 138kw chip. I’ve driven an MTM 286 car and that thing was a riot. Thanks again for sharing and looking forward to any updates.

Thanks for watching! We’ve become distracted by the race car build but will do an update soon. Ray has been putting some mileage on the car to iron out some bugs.

I have a 2001 b5.5 (technically) A4 and I've been using Eurodyne to tune it. I got 700cc injectors (at 4bar) and methanol injection with a K04 currently. I really want to go standalone at some point. I have a big turbo and just about everything for a rebuild already. Please post an update video!? How difficult was this? Not much on a vehicle can intimidate me but going standalone scares the hell of me!

Is this a wire in unit? You should show your journey as u go along.

    • @shiftcounty

We would have loved to show that, but the installation was done on an experimental basis before we decided to start filming the conversion.

I love seeing people continue to show love to these cars and engines. I had a 1.8t audi b6 that i freaking loved. I’m planning on doing something similar to a Mercedes.
How did you wire the standalone to still work with the cluster? I thought it needed the original ecu still in the car

How do you mean ... I have setup the ignition timing fairly safely at the moment to avoid destination, but as soon as we finish up the few odds and ends left to do on the car we will hit the Dyno to get the best out of it

As Chad mentioned, the ECU is basically a ms3x.... You are spoilt in the states, it is far more readily available than here by us. Maxspeedingrods also does a very similar turbo arrangement. Of you do start your project, let is know, I'd be happy to share wiring tips, diagrams and a good base map

    • @shiftcounty

You should look at the MegaSquirt systems. The MS3 should do what you're needing. The unit we're using is based on that.
