    I’ve used nearly every tip you’ve given for my cuttings of the Pacific Rhododendron down here in SW Washington. I really wanted them for my yard but couldn’t find any at the local shops so I decided to head into the woods and take my own cuttings from native plants in the end of August after a good rain. Nearly all 30 of them rooted I believe. I have my propagation box in my greenhouse for the winter. I’m seeing new growth and I’m optimistic they’ll be successful come next spring. All of the other native plants in my box have rooted as well. I believe only one vine maple didn’t make it. Thanks for the tips!!

    Hi Mike, love this video thank you. All the cuttings I took 18 months ago took quite some time grow. I thought at one stage that only two of my cuttings had taken. They were the only ones that showed any hint of growing. The growing medium used was just decorative bark that you use as a mulch. Here in the UK we don’t get the finely clipped bark like you use. It was an experiment to see if they would grow in this medium . Out of 26 cuttings I have 20 that are growing great and have survived last winters cold. I’m going to leave them until next spring and then pot them up. I’m really looking forward to that I can tell you!!!
    Last week I nearly cried as I drove past the University. They had a huge hedgerow of Rhododendrons that stretched for half a mile. Half of it was cut with a flail hedge cutter and the other half was ripped out of the ground. Wish I could have got some cuttings but they had been cut for over two weeks and just left before going to landfill!! Never mind, take care Mike be safe. All the best Graham🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍

      Oh man, that's a shame. It drives me nuts when the county workers come through my area and use a flail mower on everything up and down the street. Really makes things look ugly for a couple years. Good job on the cuttings. It's always fun to watch them explode with new growth in the spring.

    Very good results, but I wonder if maybe these are a bit overpotted initially. Yes, it takes more work but maybe putting them in a smaller pot and letting them barely get pot bound before moving them to the size you are using right now is better? For me, these would get waterlogged. But they are always under cover so maybe it is not an issue?

    Sister gave me four cuttings of her Rhododendrons in November. Used your video. Planted them in a big grocery store clear plastic box next to my south facing patio door in Chicago, watered them, covered them and left them. After six months they all have new leaves. I am planning to leave them in the box until next spring to pot them. Questions, should I remove the lid? How often to fertilize them and what fertilizer do you recommend? Right now I water them once in 2- 3 weeks with each plant getting exactly 2 tablespoons of water. The plastic lid is always beading with droplets, because of the humidity inside the closed box.
    Thanks for posting your videos. Great information.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once they're rooted, crack the lid to get a little air flow and fertilize with a slow release fertilizer made for rhododendrons. You should be able to find it at your local big box store. Great job on the cuttings.

      The growth is too soft. You need to wait until it's hardened off a little. The cutting material should be semi-firm wood. I take my cuttings in August. It would be nice if you could prune early in the spring/summer and use the material as cuttings but unfortunately it doesn't work that way with rhododendrons.

    Hi Mike I live in the north of the UK and was always taught that rhododendrons were propogated by the layering method as they were hard to root, what degree of success do you get with the cuttings method, as I have never thought to do it this way before xx

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  ปีที่แล้ว

      I get fantastic success with my method and frame. I've spent the past 18 years perfecting this and I've got it down pretty good. I've had years where I've gotten around 80-90% success and some years in the beginning where my success rate was closer to 50 or 60%. Rhododendrons can be propagated by the layering method but it's self limiting because you can only layer the branches that are close to the ground and it's more labor intensive. If you're really interested, I just posted a video in which I show you the success of my frame of cuttings this year. I also have a website (link in description) where I sell a program that teaches this in detail. Here's the latest video I just posted of my frame: th-cam.com/video/_mxTzUvb_U8/w-d-xo.html

    I bought a Rhododendrum years ago as a small plant It is now huge and always has an abundance of gorgeous flowers but the blooms are very short lived .Is this normal ? This year i decided to give it some feed especially made for this plant and its not blooming half as well Help !! please

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rhododendron blooms typically last about 2 weeks from start to finish, sometimes a little longer and sometimes a little shorter, depending on the variety. If you want blooms and color for longer, then you'll want to plant more rhododendrons and different varieties that bloom at different times. I have about 300 different varieties and around 1000 planted around my landscape and so I have blooms coming in and going out from March through June and sometimes into July. Around Mother's Day, the whole place is lit up with color. It's a beautiful spectacle but you've got to have more than one variety to make it happen. The best way to rejuvenate a rhododendron is to prune it up from the base to clean all the low branches us. Mulch well with at least a 4 inch layer of good organic material like bark, straw, leaves, compost, etc, and do this out to the drip line of the branches. Fertilize now with a good slow release rhododendron fertilizer. Water well through the summer and don't let it dry out. The following spring, you should have a magnificent show and a much happier plant.

    Thank you for your videos on Rhododendrons, I need all the help I can get! We moved to coastal Oregon 2 years ago and bought an older home with about 20 old Rhodies on the front hill. They are huge and very bare looking but still get some blooms.I want to keep them but I don't know where to start. Do I cut them back hard to the desired height? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes cutting them back hard can reinvigorate them. If you do this, wait until winter when they are dormant. Also, once you cut them back, mulch heavily with organic material like leaves or bark. Fertilize well in the spring with a slow release fertilizer and make sure they have water through the hottest parts of summer.

    Mike, I do not have access to fir bark or pine bark. I can only find hardwood bark double or triple shredded in my area and concrete sand. I am starting a nursery and I bought lots of plants already over the summer and I am also going to buy rhododendrons. Should I wait until spring or should I buy them now and overwinter them? The nursery I found them selles them in 2 " pots. Will they survive winter in zone 6 in my barn? I am thinking for the mix to do hardwood bark with some compost and pearlite. I hope that will do a good job for the drainage but I am nervous because they are not cheap. Hardwood bark stays too wet for too long. Most of my plants are still doing ok just with hardwood bark but some of my plants passed away from too much wetness. It rained a lot this summer in my area. Thanks so much for teaching us!

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once rooted, you can plant them in any potting soil. I use finely ground up fir tree bark because it's easy to come by in my area. Rhododendrons have fine hair like roots so it's best to pot up with a small amount of sand around the roots.

    I took rhododendron cuttings a couple of weeks ago (a bit late, I know) - I may not have done it right… however, I plan to keep them in soil for a year - how will I know when they’re ready to pot? Can I just pull them up and see if there’s roots or would I damage them if I did that…

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      After a year, the vast majority of the cuttings that are going to root will be rooted so it's usually safe by then. The biggest sign I look for is new growth but occasionally I will have a few cuttings that are starting to form tiny roots and don't have new growth. You can gently tug on them to find out.

      If you prune them in August. I prune in the late winter and it's the wrong time for rhododendron cuttings.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never actually seen one of those until you mentioned it. Evergreen azaleas root the same way as rhododendrons and usually much quicker. I would start there.

      The cuttings should be taken in the mid to late summer (I take mine in August) from current season's growth that is semi-firm.

      Thanks, Joni! I use to get really nervous about doing it back when I first started and it was through lots of experimentation that I found what works. I still get nervous when I only have one cutting of a plant but trial and error has taught me what works.

      Hi Mike! Your love of Rhodedendrons is contagious! I hope to get many more varieties. I bought my dad one for Father's Day before he passed away and I have never been able to find another one for myself. I cant remember the name, but it was lavender with a deep purple throat and very ruffled edges. After watching your videos I plan to propagate one for myself. When would be the best time to take cuttings? I was thinking this spring, but wasn't sure. I haven't forgotten you want a Trilby! I am still recouping from both of my knee surgeries and may have to have another surgery in December. It has been a long process since the middle of August. I am looking forward to spring and being well so I can enjoy my gardening again! I have been watching yours and Shellie's videos as I recoup. I enjoy all of them and love seeing such a close family!💚💚💚💚

    Where do us mere mortals find such varieties of rhododendron? Also, what are your thoughts on the propagation boxes that you use vs. Misting env? Thanks.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, I've spent 14 years seeking out and collecting all these varieties from all over the place. They can be found but you have to look for them. I've used both propagation systems and the mist is great for thousands of cuttings and the frame is great for hundreds. I like the simplicity of the frame and the fact that I can leave it for weeks at a time without any intervention and everything just keeps on rooting. I plan to set up mist again in the future for more cuttings.

      Yes, Gold Flame Spirea. It roots really easily as softwood cuttings in the spring.
