- Everton exited the Carabao Cup at the third round stage with a 4-1 loss to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
Manager Frank Lampard shuffled his pack for the clash on the south coast, making 11 changes to the side that started against Leicester City in the Premier League three days earlier.
Fortuitous strikes early in both halves proved costly for the Blues, who halved the deficit through Demarai Gray midway through the second period before conceding twice late on.

I like Bournemouth they always seen to do well against the small clubs like this. Fighters.
Very few managers will take a risk of completely switching their starting XI from the last game that was played only four days back. It takes a long time and practice to set the rhythm and understanding among the players.

It is not a shock result when you see Keane and Holgate in the lineup. And it is good for focus on the league.

A dreadful result that will resonate throughout the club....from Failure Farm to the Boardroom. Once again it showed our lack of quality in every area, and i include Frank in that assessment....though he is not the primary cause of concern for me. This long term problem came to a head last season, but we managed to avoid relegation by the skin of our teeth...in response to that fright we added some good players to the squad in the shape of Coady, Tarx and Onana...we also added some reasonable players in the shape of Gana and Garner...so despite results like this one, we did actually improve our defense/midfield, and under the circumstances it was not a bad introduction for Thelwell...i'll rate him on those signings as a 6. But they were not his only acquisitions....we now have Deli, Maupay and McNeil on our wage bill and it's hard for me to justify any of those signings. Playing out from the back is something i like to see a team do...but we're not very good at it...every team wants to play us in our own half, because they know we'll lose possession when they apply even the slightest pressure....remember what Benitez said "we're not very good in possession" so while it's a tactic it's not the only one...the long ball can be very effective if you have the forwards to take advantage of it...but we don't have those either...so what's to be done? We must attempt to bring in some goals in January but otherwise it's a case of circling the wagons...our defense can be excellent and our midfield can compete at prem level but let's not kid ourselves here....we're in a relegation scrap right now...and that's where Frank comes in....can he guide us through another flirtation with the Championship...personally i think he can...but he's on really thin ice.

And I think he's taken West Ham as far as he can and they will seek a manager to get to compete with the big boys.

Look, I know it was a second string side, but if we lose at the weekend more and more toffees will begin to question Frank.
In terms of the cup itself, I know its a mickey mouse trophy but we have fallen so far in the last 30 years, the league cup is not beneath us. We need to take this and the FA cup more seriously.
The backline needs more upgrading, they made many mistakes which led to some of the goals. It's okay, next is FA Cup and the Premier League. The frontline should also take their chances because for example in the first half they had so many chances but didn't take them. The team needs to do better.

The FA should remove PL teams from cup competitions there's no respect for them in England. These second string teams they put out is pure disrespect with the exception of City but only cause it's hard to call their bench depth disrespectful.

While I can understand the commentators enthusiasm that paterson at RB, while able to 'surge' forward, has absolutely no end product, he surges down the middle and passes to Gordon when shooting himself was the better option then surges down the right with numbers in the box only to cross over them all and leaving Gordon past the far post needing to stretch him hamstrings just to try and get something on it. Gordon too, he flatters to deceive, another who can run with the ball but it's all down blind allies so has very little in the way of end product. If I was Lampard I'd be cursing that I didn't snatch Chelsea's hand off, £50m for Gordon, Imagine the average player Lampard could have spunked all that on. Seriously though, Everton need to keep Demari Gray happy, that boys a player, never fails to run himself into the ground for Everton and leicester before that but doesn't seem to get the credit he deserves from the fans of the clubs he's played for

@@frankhornby6873 He wasn't like that at Leicester so I'd put that down to the fact that without DCL Everton really don't have anyone that can break teams down most of the time. They have players that say 1 in every 5-6 games will put in a performance, but then they're not helped by a manager like Lampard. Anyway, with Gray playing up front and the side being awful going forward he's taking the responsibility. You used to see Gerrard do the same when the Liverpool side was awful, he'd be shooting from places he never normally would or trying to beat 3-4 players because he felt the responsibility, so like Gerrard I feel gray in a more coherent side with more consistency would still shine but be more of a team player

I know Bill took charge in the club in the late 1990s and it's him brought Moyes in and made us very solid in the league without much budget for more than ten years. I never forget his contribution to the club. But don't forget it's him brought the stupid Moshiri in and left us in a chaos for more than five years without doing anything to change the situation. This is the first time I say 'time to go Bill' because I finally lost all my hope and patience in him. And I doubt if we can be lucky enough again to survive the relegation battle this season. Great escape won't happen twice and Everton can't live like this anymore.

That's the most embarrassing performance I've ever seen from Everton The Bournemouth players did not even feel the need to celebrate their third goal- it was like they were playing an amateur Sunday League team and felt sorry for us, and that's how it looked to me too.
