Its an excellent tool. I took a 55 gallon plastic drum, cut the top off and made a bracket out of steel tubing to set the shredder directly on top of the drum. When the drum got full I picked up the chopper and pushed down on the leaves. When it would not compress any more I would take the drum to where I wanted the chopped leaves to sit and dump the chopped leaves out
Thanks for the setup and demo. I am going to try a diy hack version of a battery powered string trimmer in a tub of leaves to see if that does a similar job. If it doesn't do what I need, this item might be what I want. edit- my goal is to shred for composting, not setting to the curb, so being able to process grass clippings and kitchen scraps as well is my end goal.
Fired off mine today, and here,s my plug, Just confirming some of what is shown here. Safety glasses, and maybe a face shield and hearing protection are a must. I used us the first cutter lines in less than 60 seconds. It is as advertised a leaf mulch tool. It does not like sticks or twigs. Any thing bigger than a leaf stem will eat up the cutter line. Therefore the rate of feed is much slower than advertised. I don't know if your trees only drop leaves but mine loose a lot of twigs and sticks. I had to carefully pick out sticks and twigs. Also leaves not fully dried clog it up. The package of line was consumed completely after 10 bags of cottonwood in 4 hours. Overall it worked well. Disappointed with how much line it consumed. The mulch was fine and looked good. The shorter the trimmer line the slower It processed the leaves. The slower it processed The finer the mulch. So far I like it and it worked well.
The best and quickest remedy is an electric mulching lawn mower--I like the Scotts because of the metal deck-it's quieter and a lot more power-will chew up twigs also-and a much finer mulch. Got all my neighbors doing the same thing now, LOL.
I use a the toro leaf blower with the vacuum attachment. It cuts the leaves in tiny pieces and I only have to touch the leaves once no raking. thanks for the nice review and demo of the works leaf mulcher though. Nice job
My yard is large and since I already owned the tow behind leaf rake, this was the most economical option. That said, touching the leaves only once would be nice! Is your Toro unit handheld or towable/self-propelled?
My folks have one of those Toro Ultra Blower/Vacs. It's alright for what it is, just being stuck with a cord is a pain because you might turn one way and next thing you know it's shut off after the cord comes out.
I loved the results I had gotten with mine but it only worked one season, it wants to shut down right away now. Think I will just go with my weed-trimmer in a garbage can for my leaves. I learned a long time ago, take a minute and look at the paper work that comes with a product. Totally recommend safety glasses when working with this machine.
I have mine for the last 2 years and it is a life saver. We have many big oak trees and my lawn is covered with leaves each season. I used to pile them up in the woods but took too long to decompose. Now I mulch through several hundreds of bags and get fine leaf mulches that I use for compost or just mulch for the woods. They break down so fast that you won’t see much the summer after. I suspect you might have ropes, vines or twines twisted around the shaft so it may slow down the machine or even toast the motor. See if you can clean the debris around the shaft using a plier.
I have a lot of twigs in my oak leaves. They wear out the line way too fast, even with the heavier line. I built a 4x8 table for picking out twigs, but that was too slow. Looking for a chipper shredder.
If you don't have gloves on, it will cut you up. with gloves, it hurt, but you get to keep your fingers. The good thing is that the string is pretty far down inside, so you are pretty safe when pushing leaves in.
I thought it was a great video. You can see how much there was there in the beginning and in the aftermath.Looks like you’ll have some great products for your mulching compost.
Thanks for watching! I am looking forward to getting my compost/leaf mold on the garden in the spring. Now I just have to make some proper composting bins.
Since it's string, do you think they could handle thithona (mexican sunflowers) enough so they could be more effectively used as green manure? Also, how do you think it would fare using metal line?
I am not have any experience putting anything like mexican sunflowers through it and though the stems look to be small enough, I am not sure how strong the fibers are in the stems. As for metal line, this is something I have been wanting to try, but I have not yet tried it. The motor should be fine and it should improve the machines cutting ability, but it does also make it a good deal more dangerous.
I would have liked a little more show rather than tell: show the wear on the trimmer cord - don't describe it. Show the manual pages. You can use the mulcher without bags if you want but for a review, you ought to attach a bag as the manufacturer intended. Position the camera high and closer to the mulcher so we can see how well the leaves flow into it. Show the buildup of mush inside and how the twigs block the ports. This was like a radio review instead of a video review.
I bought one. It works great on dry leaves. Not as well on wet ones. But, it does go through a lot of trimmer line. I'm going to try an appropriate sized metal line to see if it would work better. I wonder if anyone has tried a metal line.
@mikemarcus8676 Fogetabotit ... not practical without some protection builtin. A metal line will cut body parts off rather easily if you're not careful. So, don't do it. I suppose a safe such weed wacker could be designed, but you would need a smart device that would stop instantaneously on contact with anything other than grass 🙄
This was a more helpful video review. I am looking to mulch avocado leaves which are somewhat thick, and they are often a combination of dry and more green leaves as they fall all year long. I'm wondering if this machine would work on them. I fear it might not work so well.
I don't see a huge difference between piles "before" and "after". Seems it misses some quantity of leafs. ) Perhaps it requires an adjustments or it is simple poorly designed stuff.
I just purchased mine, based upon this review.... I understand its a String System, any idea if if you can remove the string Housing and attach something like a Weed Warriors ??
I have not tried to remove mine yet, but it looks like it might be screwed on with a reverse thread. I don’t think it uses the same attachment style as a string trimmer. Swapping the head might put too much strain on the motor, so be careful there. I am thinking that I am going to use 1/16-inch braided cable for my string next season to see if it improves the cut ad extends the time between changing the line. If you figure something out, I would love to know.
You can use the regular braided 0.090 or even 0.095 trim line to save money and extend the life of the string. It may require a little patience or a plier to thread it when it is dirty with the leaf powder.
Looking back on it, Yes! In the future I will attempt to put more emphasis on taking the extra step for safety. At the time I did not think it much of a risk since the power switch is hidden and cannot be accidentally bumped, but I do think I need to try and set the bar a little higher. Thanks for watching.
Ok video. Take a couple practice shoots to perfect before filming. Would have been worth reading the instructions first online then explain when assembling which took too long to watch. Good explaining of the wet and dry leaves effects on shredder. Nice to name types of leaves but needed to know large, thick leaves or sizes of small sticks that could be used. Thanks for sharing the tips.
Yep. Mulching the leaves helps compost the pile faster. My goal is to have usable leaf mold by the next spring. Usually it takes two to three seasons to fully compost a pile.
I did find that the factory supplied line was not very good, but once I swapped it my my main trimmer string I found it worked pretty we. Sorry to hear you are having trouble.
Twigs certainly shorten the life of strings. But it is a little extreme to go through a pair after each bag. You must have too much big twigs or branches. May pay off by teasing out some of the big ones first.
Criticism meant to be constructive: 1. Dump the music. It's too irritating to have to hear an endless, useless distraction. 2. It would have been good to read the instructions outside of the video time so we don't have to use our time to watch you read. 3. You did not tell us the reduction ratio. You could have started with bagged leaves and later put the mulch into bags and the difference in quantity would be very informative. On the whole, this was a helpful review.
Thanks for the feedback! I have been considering cutting the music, I think you have made my mind up for me. As for reading the manual first, I try to include my blunders and difficulties and not white wash the videos. I have thought how to improve this for the viewer and keep the videos honest and I think I have an idea for the future. Thanks for watching!
Why dont you do the video then smart arse if you think you can do a better job, poor guys just trying his best. Criticism ment to be constructive. I will be watching out for it and it better be good !!
It's good to see that you can 'MULCH' in place but some of us need to use the bags so it would have been nice for you to show us how that extra piece worked too.
Hey man, you're not setting a very good example of what to do when clearing the machine and changing string. Unplug the shredder before you stick your hands in there! Outside of that, I appreciate your video. It helped me make a decision on buying one.
That is a valid critique, in the future I will try to make a point to show the extra step for safety. I will point out that the machine does have a safety switch that cannot just be bumped on; and if you are wearing leather glove the string hurts, but does not cut you.
That does work to some extent, and if it meets you needs then that is great. For me, the mower method did not reduce the volume enough and this machine also let's me process the leaves in a central location.
get a mulching lawn mower...it's so much quicker and does a better mulch job.....get a honda if you can afford it.....and you won;t add any plastic to your soil like that thing

I have at least 20 Worx product. I always come here to look for reviews. EXCELLENT review! Subscribed! Thank you for sharing.
People are so critical ..thank you for the time you took to demonstrate
Just bought a used one an estate auction for $38. Looking forward to trying it out. Thanks for the trimmer line instruction.
Did my yard this week with it. Worked great. Turned most of the leaves to powder. This my second season with it.
Since leaves r light weight don’t they fly away when heavy wind blows
I love mine I’ve had my 2 years getting better every year❤️⛄️

I have this and it’s the best!!! Use it to shred leaves for compost.
Thank you for sharing your experience. You get a gold star ⭐️
For years I have just run over my leaves with a push lawnmower then just take them up put in compost pile works great.

Yes and it reduced by 50% but the bags got heavy. Make sure you get good quality bags the added weight will put them to test them.

@@hz4168; I actually took it complete apart, it's some cheap Chinese junk!
Nice review, I wish the Legs had adjustment to raise or lower depending on a person' height
Seems running over with a mulching mower would be as good/quick.
@@thumper934 We leave ours on the lawn (it turns into a fine brown sheen) and come spring it's gone. Shred and feed in one go
Do you have a link to the "hand scoop thingies" you are using? Or if you are not happy with those, any other suggestion?
What line were you able to step it up too?
Can one substitute wire for the plastic cutter. I believe they make such a product. And it would endure longer. What do you think? Thanks! CWB.
Looks great! I’ll hire you and pay for replacement string as I have lots of oak and magnolia. 😎👍🏻
I think we can work something out my friend, maybe some Irish Bread!

Will it let you set it on a trash can
How to mulch wet leaves use this machine. Any tip?
For those of us who bag the shredded leaves, could you demonstrate how the bag works? Thanks!
Do you have any feedback about how well, or not, the cutting strings hold up? Thanks.
what if you try using steel cable instead about the same size as the weed trimmer line wouldn't that chop it up even more just wondering ?
for safety never put your hands inside, that is something very important.
it will only hurt for a second
If you don't have gloves on, it will cut you up. with gloves, it hurt, but you get to keep your fingers. The good thing is that the string is pretty far down inside, so you are pretty safe when pushing leaves in.
I did a real bad number on my groin and area as well so just a heads up don’t shred leaves naked .
Never perform the work without eye protection, glove or ear mug. Use a stick to assist pushing down the leaves.
