    I love this ❤ Cold framing on south side of house is how my sweet Granny started her seeds. Thank you, Gary. Now I have to convince my grown sons to help me build one next time they are home. 😊

    You can add some temperature regulation with additional thermal mass by placing water jugs inside with the plants. It warms during the day and gives off heat in the night.

    I'm glad you've given such a detailed explanation of your cold frame and how it and the deeper earth work to protect plants. I see the nail in that one corner. I'm looking to see how else you may have attached the cold frame to the wood. Did the instructions that came with the frame specify? Thanks Gary! (You always have the nicest pepper plants)!

    I definitely want to try this for next year. The ground has had a thick snow/ice cover since mid-Dec until a few days ago, so, it's still too frozen to dig. But I'm thinking this wood be good for flower seeds that need to be cold before germination. Then when they are big enough, I could plant potatoes on the floor and just fill it with straw to get an early start on them. Otherwise, I likely have to wait until the end of May. Right now I have 3 doz chitting potatoes, and it's too cold to plant them outside. It's worth a try!

    How do you keep it from flooding during rain? In the midwest (st louis), we can get storms which produce significant rainfall, and no matter how much grading / drainage you do on the surface, water will find a way in. Pretty sure you get storms in Maryland, so how do you keep water out?

    Perfect timing! Today I'm assembling a smaller Juwel. Northern Delaware, absolutely flat yard, soil is 100% pottery clay. Raised bed is 8" so I'd be another 8" into the clay. Do you think digging down 16" into the clay might just fill with water? After 1" of yain a few days ago there's no longer standing water but the ground is a squishy sponge. Raised beds are totally soft. What do you think? Worth a try?

    Gary any advice Re: mini hoop house. I attached my first heavy duty greenhouse quality plastic on my raised beds with hoops (4x8 and 3x8). I seeded root crops (carrots, beets, parsnips and radishes, along with spinach). It was 55 degrees and sunny and with the plastic the temp of the raised beds hit 80 degrees with direct sunlight. Today it snowed. 🤦‍♂️ it’s 35 degrees and my plastic is covered in snow and the soil is back down to 40 ish degrees or lower. I’ve seen people place frost blankets over the soil direct to warm the soil temp. I’ve used frost blankets on the hoops but never so close to the soil. Will this help germination? I’ve seen people soak the frost blankets with water to help germinate carrots, can I use this technique to germinate all these root crops and spinach?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At 40 degrees your cool crops are fine. You're working on getting the top 4 inches of soil to stay in the 40s and 50s regularly and the hoop house should do that. The heat from the day will help with germination too. The only worry really comes for prolong freezes where your soil and plants might freeze for an extended period. It wont kill them but it slows germination and growth down.

    I'm going to spill my conundrum in hopes that maybe either you or someone else can offer some advice. I am building cold frames on the side of my greenhouse... my new greenhouse fluctuats from 100° F and 30° in 24 hours. Does a great job holding that sun heat during the day and at night the temp drops to freezing. I live in a swampy area. So... If I dig down 8-10" I have a puddle not a cold frame. I'm looking for consistency of temperature but not sure how to achieve it. Would it be possible to dig down to get the heat then backfill with lava rocks or pea gravel to keep from drowning my plants (in 10×20" flats)?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So I am not sure. It would be better than the ground using stone. The heat could rise up. If the water isn't freezing then it is staying at 32 degrees. I am just not sure how much benefit you would get if the air temp drops below freezing. I always say, it's worth an experiment.

      One video I watched mentioned building up insulation around the base when colder, with straw, leaves etc. could even use insulation bats. Watched some videos on passive solar greenhouses that use black barrels to hold water which attract and hold heat better. Just do smaller.
