  • A critical examination of the Pulitzer prize winning work of Edith Wharton: www.gresham.ac....
Written between the two World Wars, Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence is in part about a peculiarly modern phenomenon - the experience of outliving the age that formed us. As life expectancy continues to rise, how do we live feeling somewhat out of kilter? What does the novel tell us about the psychology of ageing?
The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: www.gresham.ac....

She switched the actresses: Winona Ryder played May Welland and Michelle Pfeiffer played Ellen Olenska.

Thank you for uploading this video. It helps me greatly understanding Wharton's writing and the society in which she lived and therefore was able to portrayed. Where is this Grasham college located? I am curious to know^^

Rather disappointed at this episode as professor Belinda only very marginally and briefly covered summary of the age of innocence, then she went on to talk about trite things. Where is the real analysis ?? I wasted my time listening to this lecture without getting any substance !

Edith Wharton had a 3 year affair? Being an aristocrat is about more than speaking well.

Edith Wharton, yes, was a great novelist but
was as ugly as a woman comes.........
She was never "a fine looking woman" but rather very tall, ungangnly strange, and bland looking one.. Look at the photos!!!.......Edith Wharton was barely looking like a woman.
She was eaten by envy and jealousy which explains her awe & disdain for her rivals .......the females protagonists which haunt her novels and had her killed by heart ack or illness along the way.
And the glee she spreads along as she follow their demise.....while "she" is building for "herself' mansions after mansions....
Edith Wharton had the heart of snake and the cruelty of someone who knew would never measure up by her own charms.
She relied on her wealth to disparage her antagonists.
    Edith was barely a bitch

So what'd you bother watching this for? In the mood to vent your spleen?

Edith Wharton was a vengeful wolf who despised the women of her life because they limited her . Because she wasn't a woman.
