Thank you for another great ride along, Martin. I hadn't seen this one before. As usual, it makes me miss flying out of CID.... except for the weather. (-: Tucson, and the corridor NW to Phoenix are just so busy with flight school training aircraft.
I love practicing and training in this type of weather. Lately we haven't had much of this; it's been either clear or icy. And yes, I love nice clear summer days, too! - Martin
Just starting my IFR training after 2 years, 280 hours PIC VFR. Your videos are really well exited, and it is great to observe the other end of the calmness spectrum in The clouds......
Andy, I remember what it was like at the beginning of the IFR training. It gets easier with practice, as I am sure you will find out. Good luck for getting your instrument rating!
stan caruthers My pleasure, Stan. I love making these videos. Wish I had more time to make them more often. There'll be a couple more coming later this year from my recent summer vacation trip, including a landing at KSFO.
I've watched your videos and it reminded me to get my IRA Ground school in and to take my Exam and pass with a Higher Grade for less time on oral exam which is taking place as we speak and yes it will be rewarding when it's all completed soon and the the flight training begins soon this year
Yup... At the time I didn't have a very large recording setup yet. Even today, capturing the panel is still difficult for me due to the vibration and no good place to put a camera, but I have done it a few times, such as in the Dubuque RNAV video and the "Return to O'Hare". Regards, Martin
Martin....I ran across your vids last night and stayed up too late watching and enjoying them. I grew up in the shadow of MDW 22R in the '50/60's's and have always been fond of Bonanza's. I am impressed with your pilot professionalism and skills...and the videos content! ..do I detect a little Austrian accent? All the Best,
Another well made video. I see this was made a few years ago. I noticed on the GPS approach you went VTF. Have you ever gotten burned by the controller asking you to fly to either an IAF or the IF (JUTUS in this case) instead of completing the vectors to the FAF? I fly on the east coast and had this happen enough times that I activate the approach using the nearest IAF and then just activate the leg needed if they decide to ask me to fly part of the transition. Just curious if this is more of a common practice in my flying area.
Charles, on this particular flight I did not file ahead of time. Instead, I called Clearance Delivery and asked for what they call a local IFR clearance. At least here in Cedar Rapids the controllers say they can deal with that as easily for a local flight as if I file in the system. Regards, Martin
Yes, Tomas. The published missed approach (which the hold is a part of) is rarely flown in real life. Tower and/or approach can issue different missed approach instructions, either while you are still inbound or once you decide to go around.
Elijah Jensen They asked what the bases of the cloud layer were. He didn't pay attention when he broke out on final for the ILS (which is fine) so he just told them he wasn't paying attention.
Hello Alain, that is fairly simple to do in my video editor. Video and audio are on separate tracks; in fact I use a separate audio recorder to record the ATC and intercom audio (separate from the GoPro cameras). Then I can change the speed of one but not the other if I want.

Thanks Martin, another good one to watch - well edited. Good use of a rainy/gray day. And a reminder to note bases for other traffic...
best editing i've ever seen in an aviation video...and no music....well done...CHEERS!!!
So cool
Thanks for the feedback.
Looks like you have quite a collection of flying videos yourself!
- Martin
That I do, I release one every Monday. I can't stay away from that airplane!

Great way to learn insights. Excellent!!!!!!!!
Thank you - glad you liked it!

Really great IFR weather. Thanks for the video. It was great
Martin, I want to personally thank you for sharing your experiences, here and on BT

Go for it, Bernard. You know it's going to be worth it. How did the oral exam go?
Regards, Martin
nicely done.
Thank you, Bill.
Would like to have seen the instruments vs outside wx.

Hand flying with my CFII is definitely going too be exciting
I can't wait to get back on my IFR training this year to practice approaches in IMC conditions
It's a fun and rewarding thing, isn't it?

Very nice
Thank you, stealhty1.
Great communication skills with ATC to make your flight a success
Woop woop ... Pull up! Woop woop ... Pull up!
Nope!

Emil, thanks for the kind words!
And you are pretty close regarding the accent. I grew up in Germany and flew gliders there before moving to the US.

Did you file this flight prior to contacting tower and requested the practice approaches?

I haven't taken my exam yet sir because I'm finally getting to work with my CFII
what airport is the departure airport?
Awesome as always. After the first approach, were u able to go into the second approach without doing the missed hold procedure?
Yes, Tomas. The published missed approach (which the hold is a part of) is rarely flown in real life. Tower and/or approach can issue different missed approach instructions, either while you are still inbound or once you decide to go around.
What did departure ask you when you went missed on the first ILS? You said "I wasn't paying attention, sorry"
Elijah Jensen They asked what the bases of the cloud layer were. He didn't pay attention when he broke out on final for the ILS (which is fine) so he just told them he wasn't paying attention.
Between layers
How did you have the camera mounted?
Tate, the camera was mounted on the windshield, using a suction cup mount.
Prechecklist Before landing
How do you speed up the video while leaving the audio at the proper speed ?
Hello Alain, that is fairly simple to do in my video editor. Video and audio are on separate tracks; in fact I use a separate audio recorder to record the ATC and intercom audio (separate from the GoPro cameras). Then I can change the speed of one but not the other if I want.
Ok Thanks . Greatly appreciated !
what kind of headset is that?
Brian, it's called 'Halo' and made by a company named Quiet Technologies. I like it a lot.
Cool
ZeroTangoBravo *going around* me: EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
show the instruments next time!
