- One of the most famous WW2 pilots, Hans-Ulrich Rudel was downed by enemy fire dozens of times. In some of those cases he was wounded, but he was able to avoid any permanent injury through thousands of combat missions. But on 09 February 1945 when a report of Soviet tanks crossing the Oder river came through, Rudel would lost his usual composure and he decided to take a much greater risk than ever before.

The poor bloody tail gunner must have had nightmares.
You just have to shake your head- Robert Scott wrote "God is My Co-pilot," but He must have been flying with Rudel- and Gaderman, too- imagine surviving that many missions as a tail gunner in such a slow warbird.

As a former fighter pilot I regard Rudel as the greatest pilot in history.

He definitely deserved the personalised and unique higher distinction ever given to a Wehrmacht soldier by Hitler..and was a life proof that the Stuka in skilled and experienced hands..could be a deadly weapon even in 1945.
Likely the greatest military pilot. A miracle he survived the war. Another miracle is he married 3 different women all named Ursula.
He never flew against the US or the RAF They would have made short work of him.
Well ,kind of,March,April 45 he mentions in his memories,sneaking in among swarms of Thunderbolts and Mustangs towards the Russian tanks threatening to cross the Oder river so I guess we can consider it as a close contact.@@jacktattis

So, I've obviously never flown Stuka, but if it was anything like in Il-2 1946 - man, I hated it! It was slower and weaker than anything on the front, and I actually preffered flying in Il-2, I felt invincible in that thing!
People flying in Stukas must've been really brave... or stupid. Possibly both.

I did an essay on Rudel a few years ago for an online martial arts website. Sort of a motivational story about the importance of leadership, perseverance and combat initiative. Rudel was not a show off like Marseille or even very talented like Hartmann but rather a quiet, reserved introvert who stayed humble despite his starlike status in the 3rd Reich. He was also not afraid to go against his superiors and even famously once told Hitler to go f_k himself (not in those exact words but bold enough to make the whole room go quiet).
Thanks for sharing. His mindset is indeed one of more interesting aspects of his autobiography.

I read in his book how he got a mobility kill against a Russian ace.
He didn't shoot him down; he caused him to crash into a hill.
The part that fascinated me probably the most is how he was able to survive multiple fighter attacks. If you play WT for example, and an enemy fighter gets close, you are generally dead. But in real life, fighter pilots probably weren't as capable or it was something else.

The most laughable thing in this story is the statement that that had been "an ace".
"I just can't understand how he manages to follow my sharp turns in his fighter aircraft", wrote Rudel: "Sweat poured from my forehead." Rudel started preparing himself for the final end, as he suddenly heard his rear-gunner, Stabsarzt Ernst Gadermann, cry over the R/T: "Got the Lag!" Rudel continues: "Was he shot down by Gadermann, or did he go down because of the backwash from my engine during these tight turns? It doesn't matter. My headphones suddenly explode in confused screams from the Russian radio; the Russians have observed what happened and something special seems to have happened... From the Russian radio-messages, we discover that this was a very famous Soviet fighter pilot, more than once appointed as Hero of the Soviet Union."

Hans Rudel the father of tank busting Aircrafts tactic, great to hear his story, the advice he gave for the A10 warthog aircraft to have 30 mm Gatling cannon gun in the front was a lesson, he experience against Soviet was worth in Gold to republic aircraft.
You would expect that Ju-87 had no chance of surviving that late in the war but he could make it work. I was surprised that enemy fighters couldn't bring him down, he could outmaneuver them somehow and escape. Try that in War Thunder 😁
The A-10 gun accounted for very few tank kills in the Middle East conflicts.

It's not like the Russo-Ukrainian war at least where you can make piles of tank wrecks even if you miss your intended target... Sure though, spotting and then hitting your target with that gun might be a challenge.

Rudel was rather ironically important in the design of the A-10 thunderbolt 2. The reps for Fairchild aircraft went to interview him and asked him what made a good tank buster. His answer is why the A-10 features extensive cockpit armor, has a full manual reversion system ( yes if the hydraulics are shot out it’s got cables and pulleys to move the surfaces). It’s also why the engines sit far back and why the Hog has the main landing gear that doesn’t fully retract. Regardless of your opinions of Rudel as a person his knowledge of anti armor tank killing is why so many A-10 pilots have taken worse hits then him and managed to land their badly damaged jets back home. He subscribed to a horrible ideology but it was that super science of WW2 Germany that’s gotten us where we are today. Makes things complicated and conflicted, doesn’t it?
the A 10 is today outdated junk. low and slow over a modern battlefield is suicide and has been for some time. that's why the USAF has been trying to mothball the A 10 since the 1990s.
History is never easy but that's exactly why we study it. Also I should probably do another A-10 video soon 😁
@@showtime112 ukraine is not asking for A 10s and the su 25s are deployed with stand off tactics. su 25s are firing their weapons loads from a distance after suffering grieves losses earlier in the conflict while providing close air support. same with the rooskie choppers. but this was well know after kuwait in '91. love your videos.

Still has its place, doctrinally. Otherwise they would not have chosen the AirWarden as a replacement for CAS because logical thinkers fully understand that mission will never be realized by the F35 in a non-permissive environment. There will always be a need for CAS dedicated airframes, one way or another.
Do they really want their F-35s trying to do everything?

Gunter Rall confirmed in an interview that Rudel was a maniac
He seemed to believe that if he stopped flying combat missions, Germany would surely loose. Or at least, he couldn't live with himself for not doing everything possible.

If this story is only half true this is still a valiant warrior. Hate to give credit to the enemy but such bravery must be acknowledged. I always thought these were 40mm cannons on the JU87. Guess they were 37mm.

Ja Richtig, obwohl die deutsche Firma Krupp in den 20 er Jahren des 20.Jahrhunderts mit der schwedischen Firma Bofors das 40 mm. Geschützt mit Entwickelt haben, wurde es nicht in die Wehrmacht übernommen, man blieb beim alten Kaliber von 37 mm. Es war Ihnen wohl zu Teuer, ( da die Reichswehr kaum Geld hatte) obwohl es natürlich auch viel Leistungsfähiger war,als die 3,7 cm. Alleine das Geschossgewicht betrug 930 g. Bei der 3,7cm. nur 650 g. Schussweite und Höhe waren Besser, die Kadez war Gleich.

Gadermann was a qualified doctor at Rudel's base on the Eastern front earlier in the war. The story I heard was that he volunteered to crew the rear seat for Rudel when Rudel's gunner was killed. In any case, Gadermann continued in this role for the rest of the war. In this incident, he knew what to do to stop Rudel bleeding to death and almost certainly saved his life. Hitler decorated them both. After the war, Gadermann became a cardiologist. I believe he was a senior medical officer at the 1972 Munich summer Olympics. Whatever else you might say, it must have taken great courage to sit in the back of a Stuka helplessly facing backwards into the sky in those steep dives, wondering if the pilot was going to pull up in time. What faith.

Thé total is 519 tanks, 4ships, 9 airkills with FW190. When his gruppe surrended, his personnal FW190 was fly by a woman and landed intact. Later this Fw was tested in USA

That man was an Air Force on his own.I've read his book more times that I can remember.As a pilot myself,after a grievious motorbike accident,I had his book next to my bed in the hospital,with Douglas Bader's biography.Best regards from Spain.Terrific graphics and documentary.

Only winner of the Knights Cross, Oak leaves Swords and Diamonds...in GOLD. When he surrendered his Unit he flew his birds out of Ruzeyne ( Praha) and landed in Kitzingen near Würzburg.
One of my most prized items in my collection is my war time signed photo of Rudel signed by him. I also have another signed photo by Rudel that is post war. He was an incredible pilot and a hero for Germany.

He seemed to believe that if he stopped flying, his country would certainly loose the war or something similar. It is interesting to analyze his mindset (he gives plenty of clues in his book).

Thanks! Man certainly knew what he knew. And he didn't think he knew everything. He was offered to command Me-262 units but he refused because he wasn't an expert in jets or fighters generally speaking.

I’m always amazed at how big the balls are on these pilots. They flew at low levels and had only a fraction the amount of ammo an A10 pilot has.Which probably accounts for the friendly fire incidents in the Gulf. Rudel could I’d IS tanks and T 34s yet A10 pilots seem to have trouble differentiating between a Warrior and a BMP, even with state of the art gun sights and targeting electronics.Seems theirs no substitute for the good old mk1 eyeball and patience.
I suppose all that experience made him more self confident. It is also likely that he was making lower passes over the enemy in order to identify and hit the targets.

When Rudel was caught he asked to fly a Ju87 against two Spitfires, he felt he would win the dogfight. The RAF declined the offer.
For obvious reasons - he was their prisoner and he was getting no special treatment.

The allies picked up quite a few of them in the final few weeks of the war. Maybe they should have put Johnny Johnson in one if the spits and Sailor Malan in the other!

I read Rudel's autobiography in 2009, a very interesting book to read if you ask me, he was a great pilot and a devoted nazi.
It's a must read for aviation enthusiast (even though we shouldn't just believe everything).

Can a pilot really distinguish between a T34 and an IS tank from an airplane? Would not be surprised if Rudel made that up.
Maybe yes and maybe not. To be absolutely sure, it would have to be tested by replicating the actual conditions.
I think when he crashed landed his gunner who on this trip was a doctor tied a tourniquet on his leg, saving his life.
Yes, Gadermann served as a doctor previously and then he volunteered to become a rear gunner.

According to Russian documents, there were no IS tanks in this area on that day so Rudel was … not precise in his memoirs.😊 A couple of T-34s were lightly damaged (and then repaired) near the crossing - but probably not by Rudel either: the Russian reports refer to a damage caused by bombs. This episode does not question the point that Rudel was superlucky but does question his claimed score
Care to provide any specifics? Which documents, who did that research? Any links, books or articles to support that claim?

I read an article of a Russian historian (can’t recollect the name - tried a quick search with the name on my mind but it didn’t work out) who carefully reviewed the documents of the respective Soviet armies and, specifically, tank units operating in that area. Sorry, I do not have this article at hand. He researched that day and several days later - in case the losses were not reported timely (unlikely at that period of the war). Like I said, there were no losses among IS’; if I remember correctly (I read this like 10 years ago) there were no even Separate Guardian Regiments / Brigades with IS tanks in the vicinity - but I might be mistaken on this particular point. I, however, clearly remember the facts I referred to in the first post.
One more thing I remember (a bit vaguely) - Rudel claimed that the terrain did not allow a safe approach to the crossing. The author claimed it was not exactly true and provided maps of the terrain and the photos (of the period) of the nearby village or small town - it was quite convincingly (to me) that the area was providing SOME cover.
In my view, this beats the memoirs “confirmed” only by the word of their author - an indoctrinated Nazi.

If the Stukas were so good How is it they were sent east after the Battle of Britain They were easy meat and Rudel would have been the same
Eastern Front was a completely different situation. BoB was fought over a relatively small area (compared to the East) with radar coverage and well organized defense. Nothing like this existed in the East and such comparisons are very superficial.
When historians checked his claimed kills vs Soviet reported losses, it was found he exaggerated his kills time 5.
Can you give the exact sources for this? Which historians? And how did they check that, did they compare his claims to Soviet records? Ord did they just make guesses?
