Several pods of bottlenose dolphins live around Mnemba Island. They travel in small groups around the island, and like to spend time in the lagoon in the southwest of the atoll, looking for food, especially flounders that they find in the sand. When they are there, they can be very slow and relaxed, and snorkelers can spend some quality time with them, making it the best Zanzibar snorkeling tour!
All these shots were taken with a Gopro Hero 3+, while snorkeling. The topside views of the lagoon, where you will see the traditional fishermen in their Ngalawa, their traditional boats, add to the charm of the best snorkeling site in Zanzibar. The dolphins here have space and are more relaxed than in Kizimkazi, they are not aggressively chased by the boatsmen.
The snorkeling tour to Mnemba Atoll is the perfect complement to a East african safari. Beautiful! Do you only see the dolphins snorkeling, or is there any chance to see them while diving?
You can, but it takes a lot of luck. Most of the times we see them snorkeling, either on the way to the dive sites or between the dives. We see them about 50% of the times I'd say.

Hey Thibault, great video, thanks for sharing. As I understand it will be windy in July, right? But how will it influence chances of seeing dolphins at Mnemda atoll?
Dima Vosk, yes, it is windy in July and August over there, which makes it harder to spot the dolphins at Mnemba. There is still a pretty good chance to see them though, I'd say 50-50?

what time of year did you go? Is the water ever warm enough to swim without the wet suits?
Kimberly, I worked there for 2 years. The water never goes below 25 degrees, but thr best time if you want to go without wetsuits would be feb-march: no wind and the water is almost 30 degrees.

이상용 , I am working in Zanzibar, Tanzania. To see dolphins you need to go to dive or snorkel at Mnemba atoll, on the east coast of Zanzibar. One ocean is a reliable operator, and the best time is from October to mid- December. I hope you get to see them!
