The Canadian B.D. was originally danced to 6/8 pipe marches until the great West Coast bandleader Bobby MacLeod from Tobermory, Isle of Mull saw an opportunity to modify it very slightly at the end of the figure (step, hop, step hop etc) and use a running step which became the standard version for experienced dancers - using 2/4 pipe marches or some types of hornpipes. But for inexperienced dancers doing the first round of the dance to a couple of 6/8 pipe marches is a good idea, then when you repeat the dance later use 2/4 marches and explain the slight change of steps and tempo.

The tune is popularly known as Father John MacMillan of Barra. For some reason, the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra call it by another name in their video of the Canadian Barn Dance.

This is so much slower than the Scottish ceilidh version I know. I'm sure Scottish Canadians would dance it faster. I always think of it as a Scottish dance, but don't know where the Canadian connection came from. My RSCDS Scottish dance book describes the music as a 2/4 pipe march, and the dance devised by B Durrands, collected by Mary Stoker.
