      Diane Kruger is German, Marie Antoinette is Austrian. Have you not known history? or you make movies as your source? lol

      holy...i've forgotten this movie exists! These are some very confusing and weird replies but at least u reminded me to finally watch this movie. also, quick aside, this was apparently based on a novel that's about a _fictional_ account of Marie Antoinette's last days in power. So maybe it's ok if the filmmakers have some lee-way when it comes to historical revisionism.

    I loved this one. You can almost smell the body odor and bad breath.
    This film really captured the panic, confusion, and non information swirling around during the early stages of the Revolution.

      This makes me think of a writer I used to read who had exclusively sad stories where the leads always died. I had about 18-20 of her books and a box of tissues and some Hershey bars (or Mr. Goodbars, depending on the phase) on that shelf, because I knew if I was reaching for one of those books, I’d need to have comfort chocolate and a full box of tissues to cry into. Tylenol also helps the dehydration cry-headaches. 😂 Sometimes you’ve just gotta watch/read stuff you know will make you cry. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    This movie is exquisite, a real pearl, highly recommended. Made apparently for French audience, so for the other nations it was possible to see it at French film festivals, etc. Not only that Leas Seydoux has showed here she is amazing actress, even before Blue is the warmest color, but also Diane Kruger impressed me, gave a different view on Marie Antoinette, showed her as a real member of high class, destined to disappear, tragic not only for her tragic death, but also for her tragic private life. The script is unbelievable intriguing, and its really worth seeing.

    This is an interpolation...we don't necessarily think for sure she had this, but this is trying to explain how women were with each other in this period. Much like Tipping the Velvet, this is trying understand sexuality, this could be real. There are documents and evidence that could somewhat support this but in closed doors what do we know when it's not written? I saw this and it was a brilliantly acted period piece and very authentic to some of the details.

    sexuality is not a box, there's not need to label it and Marie Antoniette's sexual orientantion is uncertain, as a human, she is capable of loving and maybe, she loved a woman and she loved a man, does that make her bisexual? we'll never know, she is the only one who could have answer that question and she died in 1793. Stop arguing about her sexuality, it doesn't matter, remember her as the intelligent and special woman she was, not who she loved.

    • @shramanamondal4624
      @shramanamondal4624 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      She is remembered as the intelligent and special woman. But there's nothing bad in being interested in historical character's life. And no one has a problem with her sexuality, they just want to show the less known facts about her. That's of course bcoz she was an interesting and remarkable character.

      Im a huge admirer of Marie Antoinette and she is not remember for her intelligence in any way shape of form. Her resolve was strong in her last days but she was also a firm believer in the divine right of kings. An idea which had been abandoned by most developed monarchies even by the late 18th century. She was a scapegoat and a tragic figure of the revolution and hugely misunderstood.

      In order to have a deeper view of a person, sometimes you have to examine the types of relationships they had, whether platonic or sexual; it can add another dimension to a character that has been mainly viewed and judged by her notoriety. Also, it can be used to present culture and morality of that time more clearly

    Um guys, movies are made up. If it wants to have her riding dragons, not dying and being gay well it's called imagination. Since when does art have to reflect reality 100%? It's just an interesting story someone thought would be cool as a movie. I don't see based on a true story anywhere.

    • @SpockLover27
      @SpockLover27 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      sockester234 Do you even know what gay means...

    • @sockester234
      @sockester234 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That was in reply to people complaining about historical inaccuracies and Yes. Yes I do. And the queen is clearly interested in girls. At the very least she's not straight.

    • @la_mauve
      @la_mauve 9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      +sockester234 This isn't exactly "historically inaccurate" as there were pornographic pamphlets distributed at the time depicting Marie Antoinette and Duchess de Polignac's "lesbian activities". Though they were entirely baseless, and no proof existed besides the fact that Polignac was Marie's favourite. So... though it doesn't say "based on a true story", there is some real-life ties to the story and it's origins (even tho they were made up from someones imagination at the time as well lmao)

    • @SpockLover27
      @SpockLover27 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +sockester234 If she's interested in girls that would make her pan, bi, lesbian, etc. Not gay.

    • @mrdusseldorp3397
      @mrdusseldorp3397 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Onism I know what you mean and you do have a point!!! But, I believe he uses 'gay' as the same way as people could use 'guys' in a group of friends, even though there are girls in the group. He should have used Lesbian, bi, pan or homoseksual, but he used gay. Not really a big deal, because he just meant 'same-sex attrection', not 'she is a man and is attracted to man'.
      so, for short;
      It doesn't matter how people uses the term gay, as long as it is not ignorant or hurtfull.
      Besides; gay also means happy..... maybe he meant that she could have been happy! But, I doubt that, because this movie seems like a drama. In drama's people are never truly happy/gay

    Because sexuality is not defined by whom you have sex with, but by whom you're attracted to.
    People who have threesomes or go to orgies, are not necessarily gay or bisexual, but they go there just for the sake of sex.
    On the other hand, if you "love another woman" then you can't define yourself as heterosexual (and there's nothing wrong with that).

      +Like a Jo Bo Not many people understand this, unfortunately. The world is infatuated with the concept of "turning" gay when it is convenient for them to or when they wish to denounce a previous relationship. I don't understand why it's so difficult for people to just come out and say they're bisexual. Maybe because they believe they won't be trusted by either sex as a dating option. Who knows.

    • @likeajobo8706
      @likeajobo8706 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +Catartist154321 thank you so much for understanding and replying. I identify as lesbian and when I came out my mom demanded me to "just change then" . It's also because of that, that comments like that upset me. If one could choose to be gay or straight, why would they be gay then and face all the violence and struggle that comes with it... 💕

    • @Catartist154321
      @Catartist154321 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Like a Jo Bo
      Because now it isn't such a struggle anymore. Yes, there are people fighting for the right to hold their heads high in public after telling those close to them about their homosexuality. But that's the small percentage that can truly tell you "I am literally not attracted in the least to the opposite sex." The rest of the percentage runs around demanding everything. No offense to anyone, but the LGBT group has absolutely destroyed the image of homosexuals. They demand and parade themselves around like lords and impose this idea of superiority on the young children. I can comprehend seeing a difference in your child and paying close attention if he/she is acting a particular way to the same sex. I can't comprehend teaching 5 years olds about it (or any other sexual matter, for that fact) and imposing this idea that you almost... need to try to be gay in order to make sure that you're not.

    Absolutely! I put my words very bluntly in my previous reaction, I did not mean that sexuality is defined ONLY by how you act - however most people do define it like that (I think). For example, when a man and a woman are in a relationship, people will assume they are both heterosexual, while one or both can just as well be bisexual.

    I love how casually everyone talks about the fact that those two are having an affair especially given the time period

    • @jesseleeward2359
      @jesseleeward2359 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was not uncommon in that time period. It was only taboo to be open about it, not to engage in it privately. And for the aristocracy everything was permittable. Rampant homophobia came later in the Victorian Era when there was a new obsession with hygiene and 'bodily fluids'. And then of course in the 1950s when it was seen a s a mental illness like schizophrenia.

    I'm gay and of course have no problem with it, but this isn't for the gay community or gay filmmakers to 'Find their moment' like sit down... don't take a legend of history and display her to the whole world that she was something she was not just so you can make a buck. I've become a HUGE fan and admirer of Marie and have learned quite a great deal about her amazing life and story. I'm not mad that this plain movie is just simply all about the idea of her being a lesbian, but that its horribly untrue to her real life's remarkable story. Such a disgrace and dishonor. Somewhere in France Marie is turning over in her grave.

      +Travis Woodbeck
      "HUGE fan and admirer of Marie and have learned quite a great deal about her amazing life and story"
      "I'm not mad that this plain movie is just simply all about the idea of her being a lesbian, but that its horribly untrue to her real life's remarkable story"
      * This movie is based on REAL pamphlets (though created baselessly at the time, and only using the fact that the Duchess de Polignac was Marie's favourite ) used to "slander" Marie Antoinette, and this you would know if you've learnt about her as thoroughly as one would believe you would if you were, quote, such a "HUGE fan and admirer" *
      This movie isn't entirely baseless as you think,
      Please see below:
      By the late 1780s, thousands of pornographic pamphlets alleged that Gabrielle (Duchess de Polignac) was the queen's lesbian lover, and, although there was no evidence to back up these accusations, they did immeasurable damage to the prestige of the monarchy, especially given the deep-rooted suspicion of homosexuality held by the bourgeoisie and urban working-classes at the time.

    • @TravyJsSpace
      @TravyJsSpace 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      So your telling me, just because marie was so close with Gabrielle Du Polignac (which I'm highly aware of, thank you) and that idiotic and mindless pamphlets that were pretty much the equivalent of trashy magazines of today (lies and rumors) that it's possible this whole things is true? Please, take many seats. That doesn't say anything or give any sort of logical back up that Marie Antoinette was gay in the slightest. Most times than not when someone sees a historical film about a historical figure that they know nothing about its usually the only information they hold about that person afterwards. So making a film like this with no logical base or any sort of real facts is wreck less and sad, all for a buck and to inflame some directors ego who really has no idea what was going on and did absolutely no research

    • @la_mauve
      @la_mauve 9 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Travis Woodbeck and I quote: "(though created baselessly at the time, and only using the fact that the Duchess de Polignac was Marie's favourite)"
      I have, myself, stated that it was baselessly made, and simply used as slander against Marie Antoinette.
      I'm telling you that the movie isn't entirely baseless historically or just something someone pulled out of their "imagination" (meaning the writer or whomever came up with this film, as I've already stated the original pamphlets were baseless)
      The director/whomever obviously did enough research to know about the pamphlets, as if he/she didn't, the idea that "Marie is gay for Polignac" would really have been sprouted from nowhere.
      This movie is based off the "idea" from those trashy pamphlets that Marie and Polignac were a fling. Those pamphlets historically exist, and so therefore this story has some historical basis wether or not the base was originally right or wrong to begin.
      Thanks for shooting over the points I had originally made only for you to pretty much repeat what I said, still avoiding the original point, and then me having to repeat it all.
      TLDR; There is a historical basis for the idea of this movie.
      Thanks.

    I´m very used to read serious biografies of Marie Antoniette. Evelyne Lever, Jean Plaidy and others. None of them even suggested lesbianism with Madame Polignac! It´s a pity a movie with that gorgeous art direction, figurines and mainly location (Versailles and Petit Trianon themselves!) instead of approaching true or at least interesting aspects of that crazy period of France, spend time with unbelievable theories for intimate aspects of Antoniette's life. I don't think the french people will appreciate it.

    • @rarifica
      @rarifica 10 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      actually at the time there were pamphlets that suggested a relationship between the queen and the duchess, though it was probably a lie to ruin her reputation ( like the necklace incident and the "eat cake" thing) and didn't you found this movie interesting? besides the lesbian relationship i really though the point of view it shows ( of the servants) was its biggest score, showing how the life in the palace was and all, i believe the romance was the less important point

      This movie never actually claims the Queen was a lesbian. Obviously it is heavily suggested, but it could also be inferred that the Queen was so infatuated because she lacked close relationships at court. Polignac offered a glimpse at a life without the burdens of royalty, and she was in love with the idea that the Duchess didn't treat her as a Queen. I hope people can see the complexity of the situation.

    • @alexisjaussen489
      @alexisjaussen489 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      She had a serious lover though, it was heavily documented, they even try to say that that guy fathered her son. They theorize that she might have been a lesbian because there was alot of sexual licentious in her court, and you are what your court does.She picked the court that she did because of the way they treated her if you actually watch the MA movie they show that. She is more of a tragic historical figure that the directors all refuse to take seriously so they put her in these things.

      Literally France couldn't care less if she was bi or not. I'm French and really happy to see a film taking place in that period of time featuring two women attracted to each other. Is it historically accurate? Maybe it is, maybe it's not! But was every historical film ever made historically accurate? Of course not! Even film like "Troy", based on a fiction, erase gay characters, like Achilles and Patroclus, for the sake of erasing them. Just say you're uncomfortable with two women loving each other and go

    It's only recently (well, the past 50 years) that art historians have been making a distinction between the two. the art of say 1760 is too different from the one in say 1700, not just esthatically, but also in the thinking behind it.
